iBook G3 12": Display black /are there any vital screws?

Another day, another disaster. Husband bought this for me to fix for him. (says I hog the Mac..don't know why he thinks that) Advertised as not powering on. Opened the box, pressed the power button and you can hear the hard drive/fans/chime but the LCD is black...no faint images/no cracks etc that I could see. Decided to try the cheap route first and bought the LCD data cable. Opened the iBook up and discovered someone has been here before...some screws missing, Looks like they have done the same repair I planned. Unfortunately there are about 6 stripped screws(+ the missing ones) I planned to just use only the essentials when I put it back together. So the point here is..are any screws a ground etc or vital to the original location?

part 2 of the question..Would you suspect the LCD if it is entirely black? I went for the connection idea because the wires go through the hinge...are these ibooks plagued with graphics card problems and would it give a black screen?

ok..have had time to consider options and am going with oldturkeys brilliant suggestion of glue. I didn't think I had enough to make a connection but I don't think size matters here...just need a connection! I have tried soldering what I have, cleaned, fluxed.. solder seems frightened of the board! so have ordered something like this I'll let you know when I get the glue and the "bodge" done. Thanks to all who have tried to help :-)

right have received glue (£5 for 9ml..looks to be enough to glue 300 boards, a real bargain!)..all the way from the USA! waiting for it to cure before I try the start up, but thankyou so much oldturkey for reminding me of this product. Must remember to use brain more often and think outside the box!

Hi,

When I open my dad's 12" G3 iBook more than a few inches (45 degrees) the screen goes black / switches off, yet when I lower the screen again it comes back on. Seems like there might be a loose connection or a cable is jamming. Can anyone help me please?

iBook G3 12": Kernel panics immediately upon powering on and shuts off

Hi! I acquired a large quantity of 12" iBook G3/500s, and while a good quantity of them work fine, many of them (about 30) kernel panic immediately upon powering on and shut off. They do sometimes boot up fine and work for as long as you keep them on, but then they tend to shut off again when they are rebooted. They usually start working again when you make a change (i.e. add RAM, reset PRAM), but just when I think I've fixed one of these machines, it starts shutting off again. My first suspicion was that it was a memory issue, however they are just as likely to do it when all expansion RAM has been removed. I've tried resetting PRAM/PMU, loading an image vs loading the OS manually, and all the usual stuff. The interesting thing here is that there are so many similar machines acting in a similar way...it makes me think the cause of the problem must have been environmental, or that they all came from the same (bad) batch? Anyway, if you have any thoughts I'd be very interested to hear.

iBook G3 12": DC-in board from G4 to replace a broken G3 DC-in board.

Hello!

A broken DC-in board from an ibook G3 12" 800Mhz needs replacement.

I have a spare DC-in board from an ibook G4 14".

The logic board connectors are not compatible.

Can I strip the wires to transplant the G3 board connector to the G4 Dc-in board and use it as a replacement?

I know that I still have to figure how to secure the G4 Dc-in board inside the G3 since the screws are not located in the same configuration and the "tip module" is inverted. I'm pretty sure I can figure out that one, my concern is with the voltage output to the CPU.

Will the G4 14" Dc-in board output fry the G3 12"?

Thanks!

PS: Soldering is not an option for me, yet...will learn how to soon!

iBook G3 12": iBook won't power on after attempted PMU reset

Hi there. I recently purchased a used iBook G3 (700mhz/20gb HD). It was working fine for a week, and then all of a sudden, it died and no longer wants to power on.

This is the sequence of events.

It was having some battery issues -- the battery would show 30% or better charge, but it would go to sleep, as though it had no charge. Upon plugging it into the AC cord, it would then show 0% charge (until it fully charged, of course)

I attempted to reset the PMU by powering off, disconnecting AC, and pressing the CTRL-OPTION-SHIFT-PWR combination. Nothing happened, that is, no tone, or change in light on the power cord.

From that point, the iBook would no longer power on at all. I tried with both the battery in, the AC cord connected with the battery, and the AC cord alone with no battery, and still no luck.

I tried attempting to reset the PMU again, with the aforementioned multiple formations.

I don't think it's the DC board, as the power cord continues to shine green whenever it's plugged in.

I don't think it's the battery, in spite of the battery charge level issues, it still shows a full charge when pressing the level button. Also, it still won't power up even with the battery removed and only the AC cord connected.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it's the logic board, as it didn't exhibit the flickering screen issue associated with the logic board.

The RAM and Airport card are seated properly, and I tried powering on with them both removed, and still no luck.

It was running Tiger 10.4.11

Any idea what happened here?

This is the 500 MHz model. I fix this computer but it's not mine so I didn't actually see it stop working this time, apparently the screen just didn't come on one day.
Not sure what the cable's called but it runs through the right side of the hinge to what ever controls the backlight, I replaced it (for the second time) but that didn't fix it.

I also had a 700Mhz model that went down from the problem where the video chip becomes loose and the screen does all sorts of crazy things before dying, does that affect these models as well?
I have connected my iBook to my home network via cable, got the network and an IP address, but rejects the password!

Update (01/31/2016)

I have Charter cable internet. I have D-Link 825 wireless router that has the pass word. I even tried going from the modem directly to the iBook, and checking the internal Ethernet on the iBook,, sort of worked, just did not d/l all that may have been on the page searched such as photos

iBook G3 12": os x install won't recognize newly installed 160gb hard drive

I just installed a new hard drive, Western Digital 160 GB Scorpio Blue PATA 5400 RPM 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Notebook Hard Drive WD1600BEVE.

I used the ifixit DYI.

However, when attempting to install os 10.1, it doesn't find the hard drive. Also, the hardware utility says that the mass storage device is ok.

Any advice/solutions to this problem?

Thanks
