iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: iBook G4 powers on, but goes to blank blue screen after Apple icon

Hello!

I've got an iBook 12" G4 1GHZ machine that chimes, goes into option mode fine, etc., but when I attempt to boot from the HD, CD, or external firewire drive, I get the Apple icon with progress wheel, and then it goes to a blank blue screen and nothing happens. I've gone so far as to put a known good hard drive with Tiger inside the machine, but still it stalls on the blank blue screen. I've run into many machines with this problem over time and would love to hear it's not simply a bad motherboard. I've tried PRAM/PMU resets, changing the DC-in, changing the RAM, and pretty much all the typical stuff.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. The memory isn't any unusual amount. The hard drives are definitely good. I think it's a logic board issue...it's just hard to give up on it, because it behaves perfectly in option mode, etc., and in the back of my mind it feels like there must be a way to fix it. I would say it's the hard drive's IDE cable, except that trying to boot from an external drive has exactly the same result.

iBook G3 12": Display black /are there any vital screws?

Another day, another disaster. Husband bought this for me to fix for him. (says I hog the Mac..don't know why he thinks that) Advertised as not powering on. Opened the box, pressed the power button and you can hear the hard drive/fans/chime but the LCD is black...no faint images/no cracks etc that I could see. Decided to try the cheap route first and bought the LCD data cable. Opened the iBook up and discovered someone has been here before...some screws missing, Looks like they have done the same repair I planned. Unfortunately there are about 6 stripped screws(+ the missing ones) I planned to just use only the essentials when I put it back together. So the point here is..are any screws a ground etc or vital to the original location?

part 2 of the question..Would you suspect the LCD if it is entirely black? I went for the connection idea because the wires go through the hinge...are these ibooks plagued with graphics card problems and would it give a black screen?

right have received glue (£5 for 9ml..looks to be enough to glue 300 boards, a real bargain!)..all the way from the USA! waiting for it to cure before I try the start up, but thankyou so much oldturkey for reminding me of this product. Boots to very slowly blinking folder with question mark. Screen seems dimmed. Will not see DVD internal or external drive. Tried external keyboard to no avail. Will not reset PRAM with internal or external keyboard commands. Removed additional RAM, no results. Made image of old drive and image will not open on another Mac with the new password.
iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Button makes electronic "click" sound when pressed

Here's a weird one -- I've got a 14" iBook G4 that makes a subtle electronic click sound when the button is pressed. It also makes this sound when the space to the LEFT of the button is pressed, like just pressing on the plastic of the topcase is triggering it as well. Very odd, I know. The sound almost sounds intentional, as if it's supposed to happen, and it's very subtle and high pitch, like two pieces of glass or metal lightly tapping. It's kind of pleasant, actually. It's definitely an electronic sound.

Anyway, I've had a few machines do this over the last couple years, and while it's not a huge horrible problem, it would be interesting to know what causes it. The machine has a fresh OS, so it's not a tweak to the button settings, etc.

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Possible to Swap Logic Boards?

If this question already exists for this model, let me know- it didn't appear for this model.

Is it possible to swap boards within the same model family? IE, can I upgrade a 933MHz to a 1.33GHz board?

EDIT: Here's a more detailed setup- I have a 14" iBook clocked at 1197MHz. I got it for free, as it appears that the previous owner spilled who knows what on the logic board. Everything else appears to be okay- it seems that only the memory circuit is fried. So, I think that the LCD, keyboard, power, etc. should work fine. I have the opportunity to get another 14" model for very cheap, and all I'd need is the logic board. If it is a slower (or faster) board, will it work with the parts I have from this iBook?

iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: Blank blue screen always appears after Apple icon

Hi! I often get iBook G4s that can go into the option menu and target mode, but when you select a volume to boot from, or let them boot to the hard drive, they go to a blank light blue screen and then stall. This happens immediately after the Apple icon screen. The Apple icon screen will disappear after a while, there will be a sort of a flash of a screen refresh, and then the laptop will sit on a blank blue screen, and that's it. I've tried all the typical stuff -- removed the RAM and Airport, done PRAM/PMU resets, swapped the hard drive, tried booting to an external drive, etc. It doesn't matter if you try to boot to the internal drive, external drive, or restore media.

I can only assume it's a logic board issue, because I've tried everything I can think of. There are a lot of machines like this, and it's frustrating to let them go, because they seem like they are close to working, and it feels like I'm missing something.

Any ideas?

iBook G3 14": Video shows strange "high contrast" display upon boot

Hi! A customer returned an iBook G3/800MHZ...it booted fine, and looked great upon booting, but about 10 seconds after the desktop appeared, the video suddenly switched to an odd mode that I can only describe as looking like the contrast was cranked all the way up, or possibly switched to 16 color mode, or something similar. It did not seem that there was a defect with the screen, and it did not behave like the common G3 "video issue" that is so prevalent. Again, immediately upon boot everything looked fine, option mode looked fine, the Apple icon while booting looked fine, etc. It's just upon completion of booting that this weird mode kicked in. The video preferences did not show any altered settings, and the computer showed that it was in the highest resolution mode with full color.

The user stated that the strange mode suddenly kicked in while watching YouTube. Granted, a G3 is not going to be the best platform for YouTube viewing, but is it possible that the video chip "blew a fuse", so to speak, dealing with video that it couldn't handle?

I re-imaged the laptop, and now it's fine again, and I'm watching YouTube with no problems. I'm just curious though if anyone else has run into this bizarre issue.

Thanks!

The computer runs fine off power adapter. I take out the battery and replace it right away and adapter light turns yellow and will charge for another few minutes then turns green and stops charging. I can do this enough times to fully charge battery and use the computer until the battery runs down, and with no warning, shuts down. To recharge I need to repeat the process again. When charging the the yellow light comes on and the icon in the menu bar shows percent of charge but when green light comes on the "x" is in the icon and no percentage shows. I have used two different power adapters, both work fine on my ti book, but with the same out come on the iBook of needing to remove and replace the battery in compartment so it will charges a few minutes more.
