Western Digital My Passport Ultra: Prying open hard drive

Hello - the actual external hard drive I have is a Western Digital easystore 2TB hard drive. The reason I chose the My Passport Ultra is because its practically the same size, form and shape as the easystore EXHD I have. Unfortunately earlier this year when I was getting my new computer all setup, I dropped this hard drive of mine on the floor as it was on top of the CPU. Now, the hard drive just makes a clicking noise every time I plug it in. I wanted to see if there was a way I can extricate the hard drive itself from the case and use a recovery reader I have . However, it seems impossible to do with no way to slither my way through the edge of the hard drive casing.

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: 1 TB WD Passport Ultra dropped on floor, switches on, but...

Hello there. Today I unfortunately dropped my Western Digital My Passport Ultra (1TB) on the floor. It dis-assembled, and I was able to re-assemble it just fine.

Upon plugging it in via USB, it powers on, and doesn't make any unusual sounds, just the usual fan-like noise and general soft click-tick when locating data.

The white indicator light at the front stayed on for a good 1-2 mins which was unusual, but it just didn't come up on the windows file explorer to view.

After around 2 minutes, it was recognised only as "Local Disk" rather than the Western Digital passport, but then this changed and is now displaying as "My Passport Ultra" on Windows Explorer... However its just relatively much slower than usual, and as I'm typing this, is likely it will time-out trying to load on Windows (I tried opening one of the folders a few minutes ago, and its still loading).

I'm not sure what to do, its nearly filled to capacity, and I'm hoping I can get everything onto a new drive, but is there a way to restore it physically to its pre-dropped condition? Its strange as nothing shattered or came off it, and it was dropped on a wooden surface, but I presume something has just come loose...

Any ideas on what I can do?

Update: after around 4-5 minutes it displayed this error:

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: Why are these hard drives getting corrupted?

I have several of these "My Passport" Western Digital drives. One was causing problems (not mounting, etc) and disk utility couldn't repair it. So I backed it up to a new hard drive (same type - I have a number of these). Now, a couple of months later, I'm having the same problem with the new drive. Is it possible that there are particular files on the drive that are causing this? How would I find out? I don't want to keep having the same issue if I buy yet another drive to back this same data up on.

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: ALL Files Vanished - Gone!

I had over 700 Classic movies, most in HD, that I have collected over the years.

They just vanished. Gone. The WD My Passport Ultra seems to have reset itself to a factory default, and only has folders called Boot, efi, sources.

It says there are 15 used Gigs, and 17 free Gigs.

I’ve poked and tried the Recuva tool to see if there are any hidden files, but nothing.

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: I can't always see My Passport and when it happens it doesn't work

Hi guys, i know that’s a common topic and i wouldn’t have opened another question about this external drive, if it didn’t work at all.

The strange thing is that most of the time i can’t see the image (70% of the time i plug it), but sometimes it shows on the Desktop. When this happen, if i’m lucky i can see all my files but if i’m not, i can see this loading page or just a part of them (like 5 folders on 15).

In the afternoon i’ve tried to copy on my Mac a folder with lots of pictures (10GB): it started, arrived to 500MB, then it stopped for 30 seconds, arrived to 700MB, stopped again until it reached 2GB and then an error message appeared.

Sometimes i can also listen the famous “click” but it doesn’t happen all the time.

Finally, when it’s mounted if i try to eject it, it always appears the windows for a forced eject.

Forced eject and the loading page screenshoots.

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: WD My Passport showing up in device manager, not disk management

I have searched for and looked through many questions and answers but haven’t found a solution to my issue which seems really specific. I have a WD My Passport Ultra 260D that’s only about three months old and it stopped being recognized a few days ago, while it was still plugged in. It shows up in Device Manager under disk drives and also shows the WD Drive Management devices. If I right click the drive to show Properties it will say it is working properly, the driver is updated, but if i click on the Volumes tab it doesn’t recognize anything, and when I click on the Details tab, the Properties window freezes completely as well as the device manager window.

I tried uninstalling it thru the device manager but that didn’t do anything and just stayed running indefinitely. Trying to eject the drive with the tray icon doesn’t do anything.

It doesn’t show up under Disk Management so I can’t try the partition solution that has worked for some people. I tried downloading the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it’s not recognized there either.

I’ve tried different cables, ports, and a different computer (both running Windows 10). I tried plugging it in halfway and that didn’t work. It’s not making any clicking noises or anything.

Please help me this problem is stressing me out so much and making all my muscles tense I just want to access my stuff!!!!!!

Western Digital My Passport Ultra: WD Passport Ultra Strange Recognition Issue

Hi Community!

Been scouring for hours upon hours and tried everything to get my passport ultra to become readable again. External hard drive was plugged into Mac doing a Time Machine backup, got bumped and was yanked out and dropped 1 ft to ground. Now having strange issues where it is only somewhat discover-able.

Have tried a number of different computers, cables, etc.

Plugged into a my Mac, I can't find it under anything. Plugged in, light goes on flashes and solid light goes on. But unrecoverable on explorer or when searching for drives on Time Machine.

On PC - Will show up under Devices & printers for ~30 seconds when first plugged in, then will beep, and disappear. Not discover-able under Disk Management, as so many answers have stated on different threads. Doesn't show up as a drive under File Explorer.
