1986-1993 Volvo 240: 1986 245 Volvo front strut housing diameter

Hello my name is Brian and I have a 1986 245 Volvo that I'm trying to replace the struts and springs.

I bought the springs and struts and have some challenges inserting the strut into the strut housing steps, related to diameters.

When I remove the strut I looked down into the strut housing and I see an "insert ring". Which reduces the diameter of the housing so I can't get the new strut down in it. (see images).

The original strut diameter is 1.56". The strut housing diameter is 1.59". 0.03" clearance, perfect fit.

All the struts I've purchased are ~1.68-1.71" inches in diameter. Too big to slide inside the 1.59", not even close.

However if the " insert ring" was removed, the inner diameter goes from 1.59" to 1.72".

With an inner diameter of 1.72" any of the new struts, would most likely fit in.

Question:

1) Does this insert need to be removed? if so What's the recommended way of removing it?

2) If this "insert ring" remains what is a recommended strut company to purchase the strut? I've bought three different ones KYB, Sachs (Boge), and one from AutoZone which I don't recall name brand.

At this point I think it would be easier to buy the entire fully loaded strut assembly for the left and right.

Do you'll sell the fully loaded strut assembly left and right for the 1986 245 Volvo?

Regards,

Brian

1995–2004 Volvo S40: V2005 Volvo s40 vehicle has no heat

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to fix my no heat issue. Ever since I've had the car its had mediocre heat, but now it's just cold. Sometimes if I rev the engine it gets warm, but not as hot as it should be.

Lat night, I flushed the system with water a few times, and used a chemical flush. I drove it with the water & flush in it for a few hours, and it had good heat, regardless of engine speed. I did overfill the coolant overflow a bit though, not sure if that makes any difference.

After I drained the chemical flush out and put the correct amount of coolant back in, I'm back to the same issue, except a little worse. I have pretty much zero heat regardless of engine speed. I hooked a scan tool up, and the CTS is reporting around 180F, but occasionally as hot as 225F. Temp gauge happily stays at operating temperature

With the flush in the system, the radiator hoses felt like a fully inflated tire. I could hardly squish them. With coolant, they're often lukewarm and easy to squish. If I squeeze them a few times, they get hot but only for a few minutes before returning to lukewarm. Top heater core hose is hot, bottom is cold.

I try bleeding air out of the cooling system, but the coolant boils before I can get all the air out. I put the cap back on before any can come out. Any advice? TIA

Volvo: Return of P0420 code?

Please note, I'm not car savvy, including lingo, nor can I really fix stuff myself when it comes to cars. So keep that in mind!

2008 Volvo S40 with 219,816 miles. Beginning in 07/2020, I began having a check engine light come on and off that was identified to be code P0420. In 03/2021, I finally got it fixed when my local mechanic replaced our catalytic converter. Looking at that invoice, they also replaced the exhaust gasket, upstream and downstream oxygen sensors and replaced spark plugs.

Fast forward to now. On 2/10/23, my wife mentioned our check engine light came on and it's still on as of this message. This past 2/14/23, I took it to Autozone to get the code read and he said it showed code P0420. The rep there asked if we got gas recently and I told him yes, my wife got it the previous day on 2/9/23. He recommended simply changing out the gas cap to fix the problem. This is interesting to me because all that time from 7/2020 - 03/2021 when I finally replaced the CAT, I had always suspected and wondered if it was simply a gas cap issue. But I read information online with others shooting this idea down and say it would show a different code for that, etc. Is this simply an easy fix with the gas cap since we just replaced the CAT, etc. just two years ago? But even if it is just the gas cap, did I replace the CAT, etc. for no reason at all? My wife has mentioned the car doesn't feel any different driving since the light came on, from the best she can tell.

If this has nothing to do with the gas cap, I'm so lost and have no idea how to fix this problem. So confused and frustrated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
