I have a Toyota matrix 2004 that stops acceleration on motion and rpm suddenly drops to zero. But when I shift gear to neutral and return to drive, it starts to accelerate again. I need help with this please.

Break lights work so think break switch is good. No DTC's. Speedometer works, not sure if speed controlle sensors controller speedometer. Don't want to change sensors randomly but still cheaper than diagnostics labor at garage which they would probably have to change sensors to solve too since no DTC'S. Is there an order of which you would change first? Are steering wheel column switches known to go bad on these? Any other recommendations?
