Super Nintendo: SNES turns on but only displays black screen.

A while back I bought a broken SNES thinking I might be able to fix it. It wasn't that expensive so I figured it would be fine if it doesn't work. I'm tired of looking at it and it being nothing more than an expensive paperweight, so I finally went here to ask for help. When I plug it in and turn it on with starfox (untested since I don't have another SNES) in it, my tv goes from a no signal screen to a black screen so it clearly knows my SNES is there. I opened it up and can't see any obviously broken parts or obvious corrosion. I think I'm using a knockoff power cable but the AV seems legit so maybe the power cable is bad? I can borrow a multimeter or something to test it. I don't think my tv is a CRT but I'm using the AV ports in the actual tv with no adapter so I don't think that's an issue but I can possibly test it with my friend's CRT. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? I'll try to give any information you need but I don't really want to purchase any more games since it might end up not working and the games are too expensive that.

Super Nintendo: Power, audio turning on but no visuals out of TV.

My Super Nintendo is turning on but no visuals come out of the tv when I put in most cartridges. When I put in a game the Audio of the game will play and the no signal sign will turn off but nothing will show on the Tv. I was able to play one game after a few reset tries but it doesn’t seem to be a reliable fix when I switch out games. For all my games the audio will play on the Tv but nothing will come up. Any suggestions here? Maybe I just need to clean it if so how can I do that?

Super Nintendo: May have short circuited a chip with the back of the power switch?

Recently bought a snes while on vacation, some of the pins might have been bent during the flight back since I eventually figured out that the cartridge had to be leaning forward for the connector to read it. Was trying to slowly bend the connector upright to fix that. While testing to see if it would read cartridges properly, instead of having the power switch hang out the side I instead tried to reach through where the eject button would be to turn the power on. Saw two quick flashes, and suddenly the console no longer powers on.

Power cable works fine on a back-up snes, swapping the power switch didn't fix this issue, and swapping the controller port still didn't light up. My best guess is that the back of the power switch might have made contact with pins on the PPU1 and/or PPU2. I don't currently have a circuit tester to see if the fuse and/or chips are still working... how doomed is this snes? Based on this, is it completely toast or is there some fix I'm overthinking?

Super Nintendo: SNES 21.47727 MHz crystal replacement

Hello there,

I’m a total beginner when it comes to soldering/circuit stuff. I’ve successfully replaced the batteries in my SNES carts without a hitch, but that’s basically it.

For a while my SNES has been having black and white screen issues. Reading about it online, I discovered this could be related to the trimmer for the crystal oscillator being out of sync. After attempting to adjust this multiple times, I found I was able to bring the colour back, but only for brief minutes or seconds before it went back to the monochrome output.

After doing further research, I was led to believe that replacing the crystal itself could fix my issues, as the problem didn’t seem to be coming from the trimmer. I ordered a replacement 21.47727 MHz crystal to solder in place of the original crystal.

However, I believe that during the process of installation I must have done something incorrectly, as there was no signal at all after putting the new crystal in. I was also not able to easily create joints around the pin holes (these have since been removed). I believe that in the process I damaged the traces and components around the area the crystal is located, as you can see in the image below:

My question is whether this is salvageable at all without a ton of work. I’m willing to put some effort into repairing this if I have a bit of guidance in the right direction. But if it’s going to be too big of a task for a beginner, it might just be easier for me to buy another SNES outright.

Thanks in advance.

Super Nintendo: Discoloration of some sprites

I’ve noticed with a few of my games (A Link to the Past and Donkey Kong Country) there are some issues with discoloration of some of the sprites. In ALTTP, some of the enemy sprites have more muted colors (red enemies appear purple, and green enemies more of a lighter green) and in Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong, when in game, appears yellow and slightly distorted, but all the other sprites, including donkey kong when not playable, are normal. Any Idea what could be causing this? I’ve used both the RF port and the A/V ports, with different cables, but the discoloration is still present.

Super Nintendo: No Signal on TV screen

Hello,

I have a first generation SNES (1991 copyright on mother board, detachable sound card, etc).

My TV is a V-series Vizio 4K UHD Smartcast (65”).

Whenever I connect my SNES or N64 to my TV, I get the classic “No Signal” screen, and little blips of sound occasionally. Sometimes the “No Signal” screen turns black due to some type of video signal. I know the component ports work, my GameCube and Wii both work great with this TV.

My assumption is that my SNES and N64 in this case, are just putting out too weak of a signal for the TV to pick them up. Would a component to HDMI adapter help this? Considering there’s auxiliary power needed for the adapter to work.

I recently replaced the fuse on my SNES, but I know it works well because I’ve tested it on multiple TV’s and multiple sets of cables.

Thanks!

Super Nintendo: Garbled pixels - cable is fine

So, after cleaning up some corrosion issues around the power input and making sure the shielding was back on, my snes now shows corrupted/garbled pixel tiles all over the screen with any game I’ve tried.
I don’t see any corrosion on the board anywhere, nor do I see any issues with the chip slot. I’m not even sure where to do a continuity to test various chips/connections as I’m not sure where this issue could be.
