don't have original remote. This is my first hdtv. Bought used recently and pic is too dark. Do I need new orig or universal sony remote to adjust brightness or is this a lamp or other problem?

Watching tv for awhile my TV screen goes black but the sound is still there. It sometimes comes back on however most of the time i have to turn off and back on. What can this be? Is it the tv or cable box?
