Retina MacBook 2017: MB 2017 won't turn on - how to diagnose before moving to logic board?

This 2017 MacBook Retina 12 inch is dead. Different chargers and cables don't make a difference. Resetting SMC with the left ctrl + left option + left shift + power for 10 seconds doesn't work. Holding down the power button for 10 seconds doesn't work.

I even gently lifted the logic board from the internal battery connector, held it in place with plastic spludgers, plugged the MacBook into a charging brick, and tried the key combinations above.

What else can I do before testing the logic board...which I haven't found any guides to do at the moment.

Can I test the USB-C port with a multimeter to check for connectivity?

Any advice that helps me diagnose this would be great!

Edit: I've attached a photo of the board.

Retina MacBook 2017: Only 1 second of backlight

I've been trying to diagnose a problem with mid 2017 A1534, board 820-00687.

Doesn't turn on.

When trying to turn on, LCD backlight comes on for about one second, and nothing happens after that, also there is no image while that happens or after (when shining a light on LCD).

Negotiates and takes 20v properly from charger.

Gives a chime when connecting the charger.

I'm a complete novice in board level troubleshooting, so don't be surprised if I don't know something obvious. I did read up everything I could find.

So far I think I've narrowed it down to something around the L8410 inductor.

Schematic says that after the inductor voltage should be around 45v, while instead it's 8.6 exactly like before it.

I assume something should pulse the input into it to boost the voltage for the backlight, but there is no pulsing. Just stable DC.

Probably that "something" is U8401 which controls the Q8406 MOSFET which should be doing the pulsing.

Are there any preconditions to U8401 initiating the pulsing? Or should I assume that it's dead?

Edit: BKLT_EN_R coming from CPU to U8401 does go to 3.3v and stay there.

Update (02/15/2023)

As for the differences, I'm using a brd file for 820-00244, so far the only difference I found was at the XW8401 slot, which shows a component in the file but not present on the board.

I bought this MacBook knowing that it didn't turn on. Now I'm under the hood, the light next to the battery disconnect is lighting up, but still no boot. When I plug it into power without the battery connected, the light comes on, but still nothing. The area around the keyboard warms up like my working MacBook Pro when charging. The MacBook is taking power but is not turning on. I've checked the charge port (no physical damage), all the ribbon cables (also no damage), and still nothing. Could it be the actual power button? Idk what to check next.

I have this issue that in recovery mode only the base system is available in show all devices within disk utility.... the owner of the unit said they 'reset' the unit for the new owner to install and setup to their own preferences.... unclear on what they did as they are no doubt without knowledge on how to correctly do this type of thing, but I guess they just deleted the whole SSD partition and now it is not found by the system.

I have reset SMC & PRAM to no avail. Running first aid in disk utility finds nothing. There is only 1 USB-Type-C connector on the side so target mode isn't possible AFAIK. ..
I managed to boot externally and in the about this mac (Storage) it only shows the external drive size. Disk utility shows NOTHING internal. Apple diagnostics report no issues found. I cannot run the terminal command system_profiler SPSerialATADataType as command not found.

Retina MacBook 2017: Nothing happened and my Mac screen is glitchy. Please help!

I came home from work one day and opened my MacBook 2017 12in to very glitchy horizontal lines all over the screen. It’s not a physical crack or anything, it seems to follow my mouse and images on the screens. So the lines do move around based on what’s on screen. I have tried restarting it, factory reset, reset nvram, reset smc, updated it to newest version, and ran a maintenance script with nothing showing up. No one touched it, I’ve never dropped it, the only thing that happened to it was my friend who gave it to me spilled something on it like three years ago but the only problems that arose from that were some keys that were jammed. They are easily unjammed though so I really don’t think that has any bearing on it. Whyyyyyy? I don’t understand. Please help!!!

Retina MacBook 2017: How to install a system on an erased drive

My customer booted from an external drive and used Disk Utility to erase the drive. So the repair/restore partition is gone.

It boots and runs fine from an external drive but when I try to install a system it tells me it has to be connected to a power source but there is only the one USB c port.

Any ideas on how to get a system on it?

Retina MacBook 2017: How to fix vertical white lines on 2017 MacBook screen?

This is what my computer looks like when I start it up. I unplugged it this morning and then opened my screen up to this. The white lines seem to be heavier wherever there is an application open/app icon on the screen. When I shut down my computer the white lines go away and it goes fully black once again. How do I fix this problem?

Retina MacBook 2017: After Battery Replacement: Keyboard, Trackpad, Audio not working

Hello,

I replaced the battery (Battery Model A1705) for my Macbook 12" 2017 (Macbook Model A1534 - EMC 3099). After battery replacement, the trackpad and keyboard and audio no longer work and laptop speed is slower than before replacement and only the power button is working well.

To fix it, I just purchased a replacement for all flat cables such as keyboard and trackpad, LCD, audio, power and replaced all flats cables with care, The Issue not resolved, so I purchased a replacement trackpad and keyboard and replaced them carefully, But the issue is still not resolved.

By research, I found out the reason for the slow speed of the laptop is maybe the CPU on SMC mode and not using all power for safety and protection, As the keyboard is not working, I can not do SMC reset, I just connected the external keyboard and mouse, they are working well, tried to do SMC via external keyboard but it seems not possible or maybe I do not know how to do it exactly.

By the way, with the SMC reset my issue may still remain, So if you have any experience with this issue or if you have any recommendation and solutions please let me know.

Thank you.

i’ve had this macbook for a few months and just randomly it started off as my screen mouse freezing whilst i was using it so i didn’t pay that no mind and i just powered it off and tried to turn it back on but when i then tried to turn it back on my it came back as a black and white picture of a mouse apple mouse and the side of a laptop with the apple website link

and on the link apple was suggesting i buy a separate trackpad to use with my laptop

i’ve tried all the keys and power button hacks that i have found on line and have been successful twice but then after 30 minutes i will go back to having the same issue my laptop works i’m just not sure as to why the keyword and trackpad randomly freeze and doesn’t allow me back inside the laptop
