PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: C1 capacitor for Powerbook G4 Titanium Onyx 550

I have an Onyx 550 showing no signs of life (light ring on power plug doesn't even light). Swapping in a known-good logic board confirms that something on the board is the problem. The C1 capacitor rattles when I shake the board, so I'm thinking it has dried out and simply replacing that might fix the problem. Do you know the full specs of the C1 capacitor?

Some specs I can read/see on the cap:

surface mount design

Rubycon (manufacturer)

220 uF

35 V

105 degrees C (apparently the top end of the rated operating temperature range)

NO144 (not sure if that's exactly what it says or what it means)

10 mm diameter and 10 mm high

presumably this is an aluminum electrolytic type

If I have all that right, then it narrows down the selection of caps at Mouser pretty well.

But there is at the least a question of the low-end temperature rating, and beyond that I would be happy to have someone confirm my overall assessment above.

PowerBook G4 Titanium Mercury: PowerBook doesnt want to enter Open Firmware mod

Recently I bought PowerBook G4 Titanium very cheap and I want it for my personal collection. PowerBook was sold as “for parts”, so unfortunately I do not know much about its hardware condition (from the outside, it looks almost like brand new, almost no cosmetic dents or scratches).

When I power it on, only blinking question mark folder shows up, which means there is no OS, so I decided to open it up. I find out, that there is no hard drive inside, but I at least wanted to try run OS X installation. Since I dont own OS X installation CD and I dont have device with DVD drive, I decided to boot instalation of OS X from USB. I created OS X Tiger installation USB using TransMac and find guide which tell that I need to enter Open Firmware by pressing Command + Option + O + F and then Power button to allow boot from USB. But there is a problem. When I do it, nothing happen, PowerBook again shows only a questionmark folder. Also Option + PowerButton to see boot priority doesnt work.

What could be wrong? Would startup key combinations work, if I use external USB keyboard? (since I dont know if the build-in keyboard works). Couldnt be a problem that there is no hard drive inside?

Thank you very much for every answer

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: P key needs new nipple; contact works. How to replace?

Hi all

I have a PB here with a P key not working. I've replaced the scissor mechanism but the problem is that the springy rubber nipple is damaged. When I press on the contact underneath, it does type Ps with apparent contentment.

I found a source at http://www.irithm.com/Mac.key.replacemen...

with pretty good instructions, but, while they can provide the nipple, they don't say how to install it. It appears to be glued onto the keyboard base. (ifixit only sells complete keyboards.)

Any suggestions?

PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: Replaced Onyx 1152x768 LCD with DVI 1280x854 LCD help with resolution

Hello, my LCD on my Titanium PowerBook G4 Onyx died and a friend had a spare LCD salvaged from a Titanium PowerBook G4 DVI. The original LCD resolution is 1152x768 but the new LCD is 1280x854.

The display works fine, but the extra pixels on the screen are quite strange (see picture). As you can see in the extra pixels to the bottom, the top of the screen ends up getting repeated (and actually updates as the top changes); the right side is filled with gibberish.

I tried seeing if I could use SwitchResX v. 4.3.6 (the last PPC version) to try and force it to use the full screen, but I can’t seem to figure it out. When I try to create a custom resolution of 1280x854, 60Hz, SwitchResX gives me a message that it is, “Not Activated - invalid?”.

I include the exported EDID as well.

As a note, when I boot my computer, before the OS loads in, like when I hold Option on startup to select my startup drive, it does use the whole screen. So I do know that it is possible for my PowerBook to drive the larger screen.

Hopefully someone can help me figure out how to use the whole screen?

Let me know if you need to see other details. Thanks so much!

I wanted to know if this is a known issue and what I can do about it. The fan is really working overtime and it is hard to work when hearing that noise. Also, I don't want this thing to catch on fire if it is possible for that to happen.

It is a Powerbook 867 titanium model. thanks!

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: When replacing the secondary fan, must the PC card cage be removed?

The repair guide for replacing the 867MHz TiBook's secondary fan includes steps (32 & 33) for removal of the PC card cage. The PC Card cage is located on the opposite side of the logic board relative to the fan location. For the life of me, I am unable to determine why this step is necessary in the course of installing a new secondary fan. Is this a leftover (i.e. copy & paste?) from a different but related repair guide for this Powerbook model?

Side note: The repair guide specifies that a 4mm nut driver is required, but its only use is to assist in the removal of the PC Card cage.

Any clarification or assistance would be appreciated.
