PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: C1 capacitor for Powerbook G4 Titanium Onyx 550

I have an Onyx 550 showing no signs of life (light ring on power plug doesn't even light). Swapping in a known-good logic board confirms that something on the board is the problem. The C1 capacitor rattles when I shake the board, so I'm thinking it has dried out and simply replacing that might fix the problem. Do you know the full specs of the C1 capacitor?

Some specs I can read/see on the cap:

surface mount design

Rubycon (manufacturer)

220 uF

35 V

105 degrees C (apparently the top end of the rated operating temperature range)

NO144 (not sure if that's exactly what it says or what it means)

10 mm diameter and 10 mm high

presumably this is an aluminum electrolytic type

If I have all that right, then it narrows down the selection of caps at Mouser pretty well.

But there is at the least a question of the low-end temperature rating, and beyond that I would be happy to have someone confirm my overall assessment above.

PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: How to remove screen to use as a desktop?

I have a PB G4 667 MHz which has one hinge completely destroyed after a bad repair job which cemented the two hinges to strengthen them. I want to use the keyboard/trackpad as input while hooked up to external monitor and simply remove the display assembly so I can access the keyboard and power button (screen is not stable enough to stay open; image can be seen on screen but absolutely no backlight working). I have two questions:

1. I planned on using the display repair guide here

PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx Display Replacement

but I was hoping I could do this without taking the logic board out. Can I do steps 1-12 then skip to 23 to disconnect the display from the logic board then to step 31 to remove the display (accessing the audio and inverter cable in step 34 & 38 from the keyboard side)?

2. I noticed that part of the answer to a similar question for the Powerbook G4 Aluminum 17" which mentioned that the bluetooth and airport wires are connected to the display.

How can I completely remove the screen?

Is this the case for the PB G4 Onyx also (ie only the airport as my PB does not have bluetooth)? And if so, which connection do I need to replace after I have removed the screen (please refer to an image in one of the steps from the removal/installation guide mentioned in question 1 if possible).

Thank you for any assistance with this.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will end up clipping the display as I will have to replace it if I plan on replacing the display.

PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: Display Swapping and Compatibility

Howdy all! Again, I am asking a bizarre question about compatibility with swapping.

Here goes:

So I have this Titanium PowerBook G4 (500Mhz Mercury), and I've been looking on eBay to get a new screen for a good deal. I finally bought one on Monday ($8!!!), and it arrived in the mail yesterday, and I equipped my PowerBook with it right away. I was expecting flaws with it, since it was being sold as is, but I tried it, and boy, it's nice. The only problem is, is that it seems to be the screen from an Onyx PowerBook, and not a Mercury PowerBook like mine. Therefor the actual displayed screen comes out smaller with weird colors bordering the right and bottom sides.

This same thing, I know from my own experimenting, will happen when putting a DVI Titanium PowerBook display on the computer as the graphics card is simply not equipped to recognize such proportions.

The other thing with this display (I believe it's a compatibility issue) is that it will not sleep when you close the screen. It does sleep when you tell it to via the  Apple menu. And it will fall asleep on its own from the Energy Saver settings; and the light at the bottom of the display comes on and oh joy. However, when I close it after having manually put it to sleep, it does not awake when I open it. I have to press keys and whatnot to wake it up.

Additionally, it does not have brightness and darkness controls. Odd! (Even when you go into System Preferences>Displays there is no brightness sliding bar!)

Now, for the most part, I don't really think there's anything I can do about these issues if they are compatibility problems.

I just want to know if there's anything anyone thinks I can do about it. I know there's display resolution software out there, but nothing seems to help it display properly. What do ya think?

Thanks so much!

PowerBook G4 Titanium Onyx: Replaced Onyx 1152x768 LCD with DVI 1280x854 LCD help with resolution

Hello, my LCD on my Titanium PowerBook G4 Onyx died and a friend had a spare LCD salvaged from a Titanium PowerBook G4 DVI. The original LCD resolution is 1152x768 but the new LCD is 1280x854.

The display works fine, but the extra pixels on the screen are quite strange (see picture). As you can see in the extra pixels to the bottom, the top of the screen ends up getting repeated (and actually updates as the top changes); the right side is filled with gibberish.

I tried seeing if I could use SwitchResX v. 4.3.6 (the last PPC version) to try and force it to use the full screen, but I can’t seem to figure it out. When I try to create a custom resolution of 1280x854, 60Hz, SwitchResX gives me a message that it is, “Not Activated - invalid?”.

I include the exported EDID as well.

As a note, when I boot my computer, before the OS loads in, like when I hold Option on startup to select my startup drive, it does use the whole screen. So I do know that it is possible for my PowerBook to drive the larger screen.

Hopefully someone can help me figure out how to use the whole screen?

Let me know if you need to see other details. Thanks so much!
