PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: P key needs new nipple; contact works. How to replace?

Hi all

I have a PB here with a P key not working. I've replaced the scissor mechanism but the problem is that the springy rubber nipple is damaged. When I press on the contact underneath, it does type Ps with apparent contentment.

I found a source at http://www.irithm.com/Mac.key.replacemen...

with pretty good instructions, but, while they can provide the nipple, they don't say how to install it. It appears to be glued onto the keyboard base. (ifixit only sells complete keyboards.)

Any suggestions?

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: Why can't I get past the gray screen?

Panic mode has set in!

Have done the following:

1. Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables. Made no difference.

2. Perform a Safe Boot. Would not perform a safe boot.

3. Reset the NVRAM/PRAM. Made no difference.

4. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility. Won't do it.

5. Check your cables and power source. Made no difference.

6. Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware. Made no difference.

7. Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X. Can't do it.

8. Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X as a last resort. Not willing to do that, because I really need a couple of things that are sitting on my hard drive.

Is there anything I can do to retrieve the information that I need from the hard drive?

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: Startup stalls at Apple Logo

Powerbook was given to me by a friend as it displayed no video. I reseated the video cord and voila: os X 10.3 desktop! BUT the upper case was damaged and the trackpad non-responsive, so I replaced the upper case per instructions found here (thanks!)

After replacing the upper case, I left the battery out, and charged it overnight to make certain that the PRAM battery was charged. Machine booted fine, and I proceeded to do a clean install. I did a verify, found errors, attempted a repair and was informed DU could not repair the disk. I erased the disk instead, and verified. Told OK.

Installed 10.4 from system disk. Installation proceeded smoothly, but upon restart, all stalled at apple logo (gray apple, gray background).

No Peripheral devices.

Since then, I have tried

1. Swap Memory - no memory difference.

2. Reset the NVRAM/PRAM - no difference.

3. Safe Boot - did not respond to command

4. Verbose - did not respond to command

5. Start-up from os 9 or 10.3 won't respond to C command at startup.

6. Start-up from Data Rescue allows view of drive. Scan indicates 2000 ms seek times at several points.

7. Start-up from os 10.4. Profiler shows full RAM installed, POST last run 4/1/76 (sic) passed. Software Extensions does show Dependency Errors on IOAudioFamily for .iokit.IOUSBFamily, and .kernal.iokit. Airport card was not found. Disk passed verification. Repaired permissions w/o fault. Selected HD as start-up disk, shut down.

8. Removed Airport card.

9. Restarted. Ejected install disk.

Gray apple.

I don't have another Hard drive to swap, and am hesitant to invest in another in order to test faulty HD as hypothesis.

All suggestions are welcome!

p.s. Most of the "t's" did not appear as I typed this, however, I went back and corrected them so this description could be read.

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: Problems connecting with 802.11b Airport card?

In the interest of extending the life of my PowerBook G4, I installed an 802.11b airport card. My issue has been accessing the existing wireless network, which is NetGear 54Mps 802.11b/g. It won’t see the network, and when I tell the preferences what network I am looking for it doesn’t go through. I figure the problem lies with the differences of the protocols. Does anyone have any insight into this issue?

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: Ripping sound at startup, video goes off, makes 3 Beeps

My TI book DVI 800mhz makes a ripping sound at startup, the video goes out and it makes 3 beeps. I have to zapp the PRAM about 4 times to get it to run. When it does it seems to be fine. I took it to a local store that repairs macs and was told that I need a new Logic board. I have checked the hard drive, airport card and ram and seems to be fine.
PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: PowerBook G4 Titanium 800 MHz Lock-up

My PB G4 Ti 800 MHz will start OK, but after ten minutes of being using any application, it locks-up and I have to do a reset to get control o f the computer. Also I can only the lower slot for memory. If I install memory in the upper slot only, I get the tone as if no memory is in stalled.

If I do not run any application the will not lock at all, but as soon as start an supplication the PB locks-u again :-(

Update

My HD is not dying it works just fine. The problem I believe is with something on the motherboard. The computer will boot but I can only use it for about 10 minutes. Then it locks-up. If I shut it down by pushing the power button until it powers off and restart the computer it comes on again for another 10 minutes.

As for cleaning the upper memory slot, I have already this as well as clean the edge of the memory module.

Thought there was a recall a very long time ago PB G4 Ti computers that had problem with their memory slots.

Does anyone remember this type of problem?

PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI: When replacing the secondary fan, must the PC card cage be removed?

The repair guide for replacing the 867MHz TiBook's secondary fan includes steps (32 & 33) for removal of the PC card cage. The PC Card cage is located on the opposite side of the logic board relative to the fan location. For the life of me, I am unable to determine why this step is necessary in the course of installing a new secondary fan. Is this a leftover (i.e. copy & paste?) from a different but related repair guide for this Powerbook model?

Side note: The repair guide specifies that a 4mm nut driver is required, but its only use is to assist in the removal of the PC Card cage.
