PowerBook 5300c: won't boot from floppy, get error 41 when boot from HD

Here's a question for the "greybeards" out there:

I have a PowerBook 5300c, which when I attempt to boot it normally, gets an error 41 bomb when booted normally or with extensions off. I was running perfectly before I put it in storage a few months ago.

If I attempt to boot from a DiskTools2 floppy, it just spits the disk out and attempts to boot from the HD.

If I attempt to boot from a System 7.5.3 CD, using a SCSI external drive, I get a flashing ? icon, then it fails out to the internal HD.

The boot sequence appears to be correct; the bomb occurs right after the splash screen disappears, as the desktop is being drawn.

This is my "old computer" ('96). I want to recycle it, after checking to see what is on it. I don't have the manual, nor do I see a "power on" button.
