Powerbook 190: How to replace cells in PowerBook 190 battery?

I've read about people replacing the cells of various laptop batteries. Does anyone know if this is possible with a PowerBook 190? If so, what kind of cells does the battery pack contain and where can I find replacements?

Powerbook 190: Finding a use for a PowerBook 190

I'm trying to figure out what to do with an old PowerBook 190 that I've recently resurrected. I thought I might use it as a barebones writing machine, but the keyboard's pretty terrible. I've fixed it up with an ethernet PC card and can hook it up to my network, but there are very few websites that can be viewed very well with OS 7.5.5.

I considered trying to make it into a digital picture frame, but it only has a black and white screen.

It could be fun to use it as a headline news ticker, but I can't find a barebones site or program that will work with the system.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated!

However, with unusual problems like this, i have no idea on how to solve them

My dad bought it new in 1991, and had used it a lot until 2006, he put it away. In 2011, he brought it back out, and the lead acid (or nickel something) battery was shot, but the computer ran. It said though it wouldnt keep running without the battery, even though it had its adapter, and would shut itself down

At least it was running back then, now and for the past few years, when i boot it, it just has a blank black screen, but makes a chime. It doesnt do anything else

Im wondering if it needs its capacitors replaced, i looked online and saw someone do that who had the same problem, and it worked for them. I just dont know what capacitors i would need. Also, i cant find out what to do with the battery, i dont think anyone makes replacements anymore

I havent opened up this computer yet, so nothing could be disconnected from anything. I hope the hard drive is still okay too

Even though i have fixed countless things, this is a new area for me, i havent had to do anything like this before or be stuck for years wondering what wont let me boot

Thanks

PowerBook 180: Blown Capacitor at point D15 on Logic Board

Hey guys!

So I acquired a powerbook 180 from work. Unfortunately, it didn't work when I plugged it in. I opened it up, took it apart, and found a bulging capacitor. It's square, has the letters KM on it, and is set at pins labeled "D15" on the logic board near the charging port. It gets very hot when plugged in.

Any idea how I would go about fixing this or acquiring parts?

Mac Powerbook 140: Help! My screen won't work!

I recently got an old Macintosh Powerbook 140. I have plugged it in, and when I power it on, I hear the startup sound, and the speakers emit a tone, but the screen displays nothing. I have checked for any visible damage, and there appears to be none. It may be of note that the computer hasn't been used at all for the past 20 years. I do know that the last report of its use was that the screen was a bit touchy. 20 years ago, the screen could only be seen from the correct angle, but now there is nothing. Can anyone help?

I should also note that I have little experience with physical electronics. I work well with technical stuff, but I only have a basic understanding of electronic terms. If you could explain and terms for me, that would be great. I can do some work with electronic components, but I don't trust myself with big overhaul or too much soldering. If you have any solutions that require little or no of said things, that would be great.

PowerBook 170: My PowerBook 170 turns on and shows a flashing question mark

I'm receiving a flashing question mark on top of a floppy disk icon when I boot up the PowerBook 170 I recently purchased. I bought this from someone off Facebook Marketplace who sold it for their grandpa after it sat in a closet for 25 years. I had to buy a new AC power adapter (7.5V@2A) for it in order to get it to boot as it was not included. I take it to mean that the operating system is either missing or corrupted but I'm not sure as I am new to the classic Mac hobby. I don't currently own any hardware for making floppy disks to re-install the OS either. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Mac Powerbook 140: PowerBook 145b Keyboard and Mouse not Working Shortly After Bootup

Hello there,

I have an old PowerBook 145b, when I boot it into System 7 it works fine until after a few seconds the keyboard and mouse stop working. So I can't click anywhere or type anything, but the trackball itself works fine as I can move the cursor around. The amount of type until it stops working varies: It will take ~5 seconds if I leave it sitting idle but if I use the mouse, continuously clicking as fast as I can I can get it to work for 30-45 seconds before it stops clicking and typing. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. Any ideas what's wrong?

Hi all.

I recently got a PowerBook 145 with startup sound chime, but black/grey screen (only the backlight worked).

So I decided to recap the creen board (I used 9x 3.3uF-63V capacitors instead the 35V original ones) and the inverter board with a 47uF-16V and 33uF-16V (tantalium) caps.

The problem is that, even with this cleaning with alcohol and recap, the display doesn’t work properly… now it turns whit and shows a series of vertical lines, but nothing else.

Is the display definitely broken?
