PlayStation: Doesn't Seem to Pick up Discs; Goes Straight to Main Menu

My original PlayStation has been up in the attic for a couple of years. When put away it was still reading disks and playable, stored in a closed rubbermaid container. When I plug it into my tv with the aux cable it seems to spin the disk for only a couple seconds and the white and orange sony logo comes up. After this it goes directly to the console's main menu with the only selection to view memory cards and for the cd player. I've tried a plain cd and that isn't picked up either. Its not making any grinding noises and the part the cd goes on will spin quickly if touched. Not sure if the motor that runs the console is out or if it is another problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

PlayStation: Spinner Hub Making Grinding Noises and Not Reading

Hi, well I have a SCPH-5501 Playstation and for some odd reason the Spinner Hub wont read my disks (therefor going to the menu after the SONY logo appears) and makes a grinding like noise. Also, when I try touching the spinner it doesn't make complete spins as a normal playstaion would. Plus, I did put some Vaseline underneath the Hub were it looks like a small corkscrew and still nothing.Though, I'll be happy if anyone could help me with this situation.

PlayStation: The motor doesn't spin.

The PS 1 with the model number ending in 1001 made on the very first production run was unique in that it had some very lavish CD playing IC's that were not intended for a game console. When Sony recognized the over expensive IC's were used they redesigned the unit and eliminated the RCA jacks and changed the model numbers.

There are very few of these better units and valued by audiophiles.

They do have their share of problems as many less expensive players have.

I powered the motor using an old 9v battery and it spun.

I of course disconnected the motor wires from the rest of the unit and used small wires to momentarily apply the 9v battery power to the motor. It spun but will not spin when all connections are made and the unit is on and the cover switch is depressed. The reader lens moves up and down and from side to side when the power is activated but the motor does not spin.

I got 3.6 volts reading at the motor leads when connected to the rest of the unit. I think it should be higher.

What controls the motor? The main logic board or the power supply? Is there a schematic available?

I found a site that offered 6 different schematics for various PS 1 power supply boards.

I found one that matched my PS 1 and found all readings to be correct.

WOW!!!

I found the motor connector that sits on the main circuit board was the problem.

I moved the connector, a small 4 wire connector, and it came off the board. It was only held on by 4 very small solder connections.

I glued the connector as close to its original position and let the gorilla glue sit over night.

The next day I very carefully re-soldered the 4 connections by using a very small tip on my soldering tip.

Then I reassembled the whole unit enough to play a disk and function the controls. After about a half hour and some very fine adjustments I got it running.

I am only using it for playing CD's in an audiophile enviroment. It sounds great and was worth the $9 I spent. I originally was going to use the PS 1 as a parts backup for my main PS 1 CD player but now I am using it to play CD's.

The experience I got in getting the PS 1 to work was fun and the reward is a good sounding CD player equivalent to a very expensive audiophile grade CD player that would cost several thousand $'s.

PlayStation: My ps1 turns on but then it doesn’t do anything

I bought a ps1 the other day. The AV cable was slightly rusted and bit bent so I had to use pliars to bend it back into place. After that, the AV cable fit perfectly but I fear that the cable might not be working. I’m using a digital plasma tv, that has the yellow-red-white connector slots, but it doesn’t seem to be working. The power cable is working fine, and the ps1 power button turns green so that part is fine. But how do I know what the true problem is? I put a disc in and the disc plate doesn’t spin, and the tv doesn’t even show the Sony logo.

Do you guys think it might be just the AV cable?

PlayStation: Both controller ports are not working

I purchased a complete in box non dual shock PlayStation at a flea market. It loads games fine but both controller ports are not working. When I plug in a dual shock controller, the analog light will not go on. I don't know if the memory card ports work as I can't access the memory card screen.

The console itself it spotless, no rust at all. I've tried removing the controller port ribbon cable and examining components but everything seems fine.

Note: The original controller it included has a broken cable where someone had twisted each wire together and covered them with electrical tape. I haven't messed it with it yet, but it doesn't work on a PS1 I have. I include this info in case it may have caused the problem.

Could a bad controller have blown the port? How would I troubleshoot this? Any point I can test with my fluke meter that would help to troubleshoot the issue?

PlayStation: My motor won't spin unless I manually press it?

I’m very new to fixing old consoles so bear with me.

I have a PlayStation (model 5501) that’s been in storage for years and it’s broken in a strange way. Power turns on, memory cards load, sound and visual are all good but it won’t actually load the games. I heard if you hold the console on its side and it doesn’t read the disc, that it may be a problem with the laser and sure enough, it wouldn’t load on its side. I looked at a couple of videos on Youtube to try and get some help, when I found a video where they placed their finger on a spot where the disc sits and the disc would spin for a bit. (Here’s the video since I’m bad at explaining and couldn’t find an actual word for it, timestamp 0:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJjcVWT1... )

I decided to do the same and when pressed down hard enough, sure enough the disc would spin and the laser would read it! I checked the shell and there is a part of it that already would press it down, but for some reason its not enough? Any advice would be appreciated as I have no clue what to do and am wondering if it’s worth getting checked out at a repair store. Thanks in advance for the help!

Here’s the inside of the console:
