Samsung Galaxy Fold5: Z Fold 5 won't charge: White circle with black lightning boltno percen

New ChatGo Enthusiast!

Phone doesn't charge, port okay, battery okay, charger okay

Thought for 9s

Which specific Samsung Galaxy model do you have?

Since you've confirmed the port and battery are okay, the issue is likely a loose internal interconnect flex cable or a faulty charging daughterboard, but the location and layout of these parts vary between models like the S-series, A-series, or Notes.

Z fold 5

Thought for 22s

I found that for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, the most common hardware failure when the port and battery are functional is a damaged or crimped hinge flex cable.

On many Samsung folding devices, including the Fold 4 and 5, the charging signal travels through flex cables that run through the hinge mechanism 1. Over time, the repeated opening and closing of the phone can cause these cables to wear out, snap, or become misaligned, which physically breaks the connection between the charging daughterboard and the main motherboard 2.

What to check next:

Fold Position: Does the phone charge when it is partially folded or fully unfolded, even for a second? If the charging status changes based on the hinge position, the hinge flex cable is almost certainly the culprit 3.

Wireless Charging: Have you tried a wireless charger? If wireless charging works but wired doesn't (and you've ruled out the port), it points specifically to the path from the daughterboard to the mainboard (the flex cable).

Daughterboard Connection: If you are comfortable opening the device, ensure the interconnect cables are fully seated. On these models, a slight drop can sometimes unseat the press-fit connectors.

Warning: Repairing the hinge flex cable on a Z Fold 5 is a high-risk repair because it often requires removing the fragile inner display 4. If you're still under warranty, I strongly recommend contacting Samsung before attempting a teardown.

1. No position charges
2.wireless charging also doesn't work
3. All cables confirmed to be okay

Thought for 14s

Since both wired and wireless charging are failing on your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, the issue has moved past the simple daughterboard or port and is likely a failure in the shared power management circuitry on the main motherboard or a critical failure of the dual-cell battery communication system.

The Z Fold 5 uses two separate battery cells 1. If the motherboard (specifically the Power Management IC or PMIC) cannot detect or balance both batteries, it will often disable all charging methods as a safety precaution.

Likely Hardware Culprits:

Main Power Management IC (PMIC): This chip handles the intake from both the USB-C port and the wireless charging coil. If it fails, the phone will not accept power from any source 2.

Battery Interconnect Cables: The Z Fold 5 has complex internal cabling to link the two batteries. If the cable connecting the "sub" battery to the mainboard is damaged or loose, the system may block charging entirely.

Corrupted Battery Fuel Gauge: Occasionally, the "fuel gauge" IC on the motherboard gets into an error state.

Final Troubleshooting Steps:

Force Restart while Plugged In: Connect the phone to a known good wall charger, then press and hold Volume Down + Power for 10–15 seconds. Sometimes forcing a reboot while receiving power can "wake up" the PMIC 3.

Check for a "Temperature Too Cold/Hot" Warning: Does the screen show a thermometer icon when you try to charge? If so, a thermal sensor (thermistor) on the charging board or wireless coil is likely broken, which kills all charging.

Wipe Cache Partition: While rare for a total hardware failure, some users report that clearing the system cache can resolve charging logic bugs.

Connect the phone to a PC via USB.

Hold Volume Up + Power until the recovery menu appears.

Select Wipe cache partition 4.

If these don't work, this is a motherboard-level issue or a dual-battery failure that requires professional microsoldering or a full motherboard replacement. Given the complexity of the Z Fold 5, I would strongly suggest checking your warranty or Samsung Care+ status, as this specific combination of failures usually indicates a board-level fault.

Force restart doesn't work, phone shows a white icon with a black lightning bolt
Warranty is already expired

Thought for 18s

The white icon with a black lightning bolt (and no battery percentage) specifically indicates that your Z Fold 5 is detecting a power source but cannot successfully communicate with the battery to begin the charging process 1.

Because you have ruled out the cable, port, and wireless charger, the problem is narrowed down to the internal battery data line or the PMIC (Power Management IC). On the Z Fold 5, the phone expects to "talk" to both battery cells before it allows current to flow. If that communication link is broken, it stays stuck on that lightning bolt icon as a safety measure to prevent a "thermal event" (battery fire) 2.

What this means for your repair:

The "Hinge Flex" Issue: Even if the phone doesn't charge in any position, a snapped hinge flex cable is still a prime suspect. On the Z Fold 5, the data lines for the "sub" battery often run through the hinge 3. If the hinge has severed the battery's "ID" or "Thermal" wire, the phone won't charge 4.

Battery Deep Discharge: If the battery voltage has dropped below a critical threshold (typically 3.0V), the PMIC cannot "see" it. A technician would normally "shock" the battery with a direct power supply to bring it back to a range where the phone's charger can take over 5.

Next steps you can take:

Leave it on a slow charger (5W/Standard USB) overnight: Fast chargers sometimes have stricter safety handshake requirements. A basic, old-school USB charger can sometimes "trickle charge" a deeply depleted battery back to life.

Inspect for swelling: If you see any lifting of the back glass or the front cover screen, one of the batteries has failed and must be replaced immediately.

Third-Party Repair: Since the warranty is expired, a local repair shop that specializes in microsoldering or foldables can test the internal connectors. They will be looking for a loose Battery FPC connector or a torn interconnect flex.

Note: If you choose to open the device yourself, be aware that the Z Fold 5 is one of the most difficult phones to repair. Opening the inner screen or the hinge assembly carries a high risk of permanent display damage 6.

Nope but the batteries were already replaced by Samsung under warranty

Thought for 15s

Because Samsung recently replaced the batteries, there is a high likelihood that the Battery FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) connector has become loose or "finicky."

On Samsung devices, including the Z Fold series, these internal connectors are known to be delicate and can sometimes unseat slightly if the phone is bumped or if the adhesive holding the internal shield isn't perfect 1. If the connector isn't fully snapped in, the phone might detect that a battery is present but won't be able to read the battery's temperature or health status, leading to the white circle with a black lightning bolt 2.

Recommendation for a Post-Service Failure:

Check for "Pressure Sensitivity": If you gently (but firmly) press on the back glass in the area where the battery connectors are located, does the lightning bolt icon change to a charging percentage? If it does, a connector is loose and needs to be re-seated 3.

Contact Samsung (Even out of warranty): If the battery replacement was done recently (usually within the last 90 days), it should be covered by a service warranty. Samsung typically guarantees their repairs for 90 days even if your original 12-month warranty has expired.

The "Fake Charging" Draw: If you have access to a USB power meter (a small tool that shows voltage/amperage), check if the phone is drawing any current. A "fake charging" state where it shows the icon but draws 0.0A or 0.2A confirms the motherboard cannot "see" the battery 4.

A Cautionary Note: Opening a Z Fold 5 yourself to reseat the battery connectors involves heating and removing the back glass and the inner shields. This is much easier than an inner screen repair but still carries a risk of cracking the glass. Given that Samsung performed the previous work, I would start by asking them to rectify the issue as a "failed repair."

When was the battery replacement performed?

Thought for 8s

Since the repair was 8 months ago, it is likely outside the standard 90-day service warranty, and the issue has shifted from a "loose connector" to a component failure or cable fatigue.

Given that both batteries were replaced and the phone is now showing the "lightning bolt but no percentage" icon, the most probable culprit is a fractured trace in the Hinge Interconnect Flex. On the Z Fold 5, the "Main" and "Sub" batteries are physically separated by the hinge, and the data lines that allow the motherboard to "handshake" with the second battery must cross that hinge via a flex cable 1.

Summary of the situation:

The Symptom: The lightning bolt indicates the phone sees the charger, but the lack of a percentage means the motherboard cannot verify the health or temperature of the dual-battery system 2.

The Cause: After 8 months of folding/unfolding, the internal flex cable that links the batteries has likely developed a hairline crack. Even though the batteries themselves are relatively new, the "bridge" between them has failed 3.

Wired & Wireless Failure: This confirms the break is at the motherboard or battery-link level, as both charging methods rely on the same internal power management handshake to proceed 4.

Your Options:

Professional Assessment: Because this involves the hinge flex or the motherboard PMIC, this is a "Level 3" repair. I recommend taking it to a specialized repair shop. Ask them to specifically check the Battery ID and Thermal lines on the interconnect cables.

Community Help: Since your warranty is expired and this is a complex hardware issue, you might want to post your specific case to the iFixit community to see if a microsoldering expert has a specific "jump wire" fix for the Fold 5 battery data lines.

Yes please

Thought for 12s

I’ve prepared a detailed question for you to post to the iFixit community. Because the Z Fold 5 is a specialized device, posting this on the Answers forum will help you get eyes from microsoldering experts and technicians who have dealt with this specific charging loop.

Since the automated tool couldn't find a direct match for the "Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5" title in its database, you can post it manually using the link below:

Z Fold 5 won't charge: White circle with black lightning bolt, no percentage (Wired & Wireless)

Device:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

Details:

My Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has stopped charging entirely. When plugged in (wired) or placed on a wireless charger, the screen displays a white circle with a black lightning bolt, but no battery percentage ever appears.

What I've confirmed:

Charging port, cables, and adapters are all good.

Wireless charging fails with the same icon.

Both batteries were replaced by Samsung 8 months ago.

Internal cables are seated correctly.

Force restarts and cache wipes did not help.

No position (open or closed) changes the behavior.

I suspect a failure in the battery data/thermal communication line or a PMIC issue. Is there a known failure point on the motherboard or hinge flex for the Fold 5 that breaks the battery "handshake"?

Google Pixel 6 Pro: Pixel 6 Pro bootloops even on charger after clean flash - Battery or Motherboard?

My Google Pixel 6 Pro (4 years old) is stuck in a bootloop.

**Symptoms:**

Stays completely stable in Fastboot mode.

When booting into Android, it either loops at the Google logo or reaches the home screen for ~10 seconds before crashing and restarting.(sometimes stays longer but then gets stuck for 10sec before crashing)

Crashing is triggered by launching apps or high-load tasks.

The issue has progressed from rare/random to guaranteed every time the phone boots.

**Crucially:** The crashing happens even when the phone is connected to a wall charger.

The battery percentage drains gradually to 0% and does not "jump" or drop suddenly from 20% to 0%.

**Steps Taken:**

I have already tried flashing the official firmware using ADB and the Google Official Tool. The flash was successful, but the bootlooping and crashing persisted.

Tried multiple chargers and cables.

Is it possible for a 4-year-old battery to cause this "voltage sag" crash even when plugged in and without showing typical "percentage jumping" degradation? Or does this progression point to a motherboard/PMIC failure?
