When I use the sharpener, the pencil's point comes out badly off-centered. Or the sharpener is only roughly sharpening my pencil when I try using it. Or my pencil lead keeps breaking instead of sharpening.

I have the opposite issue from a lot of people where their sharpeners won't run. Ours runs constantly, whether there's a pencil in it or not! To make it stop, we have to open the shavings drawer to release the switch that keeps the sharpener from operating when it's not there. I've tapped the sharpener vigorously and blown any shavings and debris out - everything I could see from outside the sharpener, down the bore hole and from what's accessible when the shavings drawer is removed, but it still runs continuously whenever connected to the wall plug.

I'm about to do an exploratory dissasembly, but I'm still wondering: what might be causing this? A problem with the insertion sensor? Is there anything well-known?

Book: Repair an old book spine?

I like to read, and I also like really old books. Lately I've been visiting garage sales and buying old books to read. What I've noticed though is a lot of these books have spines that are worn down and are barely holding the book together. I've repaired some of them by using librarian's tape, but this doesn't work well on hard-cover books, and looks kind of ugly on paper-back books.

Do you have any suggestions on repairing the spines of these books, or any suggestion on where to learn how to remove the old spines and rebind these books?

Globe: Replogle Vintage Globe Repair

I found an old Replogle globe from a thrift shop. I always wanted to have one, and despite it being old, and in a language I cannot even read or speak, I am happy.

My issue is that the globe does not spin freely, because the globe seems to be sitting lower than usual at the bottom.

How does one remove the spindle (metal rod running through the center) on one of these? If I could safely remove the spindle (without any further damage to it), then maybe I can insert a plastic bushing to make the globe spin freely again? When I raise the globe, (like with my finger there) it spins freely. So I think the globe sits too low and there must be something missing. Or it could be something else. Maybe something on the inside?

Or, if you have another suggestion and maybe have seen this issue before I would appreciate a fix here!
