Nintendo Wii: "System Files Corrupted" error when accessing Wii settings menu

I got an RVL-001 Wii from a thrift store. It is unmodded and on version 4.3U as far as I can tell. It reads discs well enough to display the game channel correctly but won't start them. It also throws a "system files are corrupt" error message when I try to access the Wii settings menu, but I can access the data management menu. I've deleted some channels thinking it might be a banner brick issue. Starting in maintenance mode doesn't help, either. I tried installing homebrew through the bluebomb method but have been unsuccessful. Is this salvageable, or is the thing bricked?

Nintendo Wii: Persistent freeze on wii sports resort golf

Hi,

Me and my roomates are big fans of playing Golf on Wii Sports Resort. We have the original Wii (NA Canada version, RVL-001 I believe) and original remotes with some Motion Plus adapters I bought online (not official I'm pretty sure). We've had some problems with syncing the adapters but always managed to make it work. However, we've had a lagging problem that has now turned in a freezing problem and happens everytime we play Golf. The game starts to lag and then freezes 100%, the remote is unresponsive (not even home button) and the game is hard stuck (altough the soothing wind sound is still playing, and music also when there is some). This happens around 3 holes in the game or before. Other games don't suffer from this problem and even other sports on Wii Sports Resort seem fine. I have even bought a brand new copy of the game thinking it would fix it but I have the same problem.

What I have done:

- Powercycle the wii.

- Clean the air traps of dust.

- Delete the game data.

- Desync (15s on the red button beside the sd card slot) the remote and resync.

- Bought a brand new disc.

- Recalibrate the sensor to max light setting.

- Update the wii system to last version (4.3U).

-Deactivated WiiConnect24.

I read that the disk is double layered and that might be the cause, and I need to clean the lens so I bought the lens cleaning kit and cleaned my lens 2 times today, without success. Could it be that I need a wii RVL-101 version for tbis game? However, I'm a bit skeptical that other games on the same disk are working. Also today I played some 3 holes and it worked fine, for some reason. Any of you ever had this problem and if so, how did you fix it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Nintendo Wii: Wii turns on to black screen and no audio

Hello. My Wii is old as heck but was working fairly well until recently. It turns on to a black screen with no audio. I am getting a source on the TV but there is no response from the Wii. It cannot sync with remotes. It can accept and eject discs still and the all of the lights look normal. I have tried replacing the Bluetooth controller already but that made no difference. There is no visible damage anywhere inside or outside of the machine.

I'm wondering if the Bluetooth controller card I bought may have been DOA or if there is another repair I should try. I have read that this can be a software problem sometimes but there is so much out there to read on these old things.

Nintendo Wii: Disc won’t spin after console being left on

I’m so stupid. I accidentally left my Wii running for probably a month or longer with a game paused. I completely forgot about it, and just so happened to remember randomly as I’ve been planning on starting another game.

The game was still up on the pause menu, but the music didn’t sound right (was playing Wind Waker), and I went to save it and it worked as normal until it said “error. Please restart the console and refer to Wii instruction manual.”

I restarted it, and then turned it back on, and noticed that it wasn’t spinning the disc anymore. I pressed the eject button and it worked as normal and same with reinserting it, but still no spin. I completely unhooked the power from the outlet and the back of the Wii, and then waited about 5 minutes and tried again with two separate discs and same thing. It would try, but then wouldn’t succeed in starting to spin it. I’ve taken the Wii apart now, because if anything it could just be really dirty (hopeful thinking) as this is my original Wii from 2007 that I’ve been playing since.

As soon as I opened up the disc compartment I noticed this thin filament wire around where the disc would spin. I’m not super knowledgeable on any of this stuff and I’m just going off of what I’m finding online and taking things really slow and cleaning what I can with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip as I go, but I can’t find anything online about this little wire that wraps around this area here (very much likely I’m just searching the wrong thing).

If anyone’s able to give me some insight, I’d really appreciate it. I’d love to be able to repair this myself if possible, but will also be willing to get this repaired elsewhere or replace the whole disc drive if this thing is shot.

Nintendo Wii: Wii making loud grinding sound and ejects disc

I have an old Wii (at least 12 years old) that I’ve occasionally had the same problem with. Strangely, it happened several months ago but not a couple months after that, and it had no problems yesterday but had this problem today.

When I insert a disc, it makes a very loud grinding sound and then ejects the disc after a few seconds. It then pulls the disc back in, makes the same loud grinding sound, and then ejects it again. There are NO error messages and this happens with all discs.

I’m guessing this is just a hardware issue regarding the disc drive, or maybe there’s stuff stuck in there. Does anyone know what I should be looking for if I end up taking it apart? Or should I just try to replace the disc drive? I have no experience with tech repair but I know there are some pretty good guides.

Alternatively, does anyone know if there are places that still repair Nintendo Wii?

Wii Motion Plus: Wii motion plus needs recalibrating more than should be necessary

Hello! I have a first party Wii Motion Plus that seems to need recalibrating way more than should be necessary. As in recalibrating is necessary every 5 minutes with this thing. Oddly enough, moving the remote around in a circle (as in "drawing" an imaginary circle in the air with the tip of the remote) seems to help somehow. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with this, or is this normal? UPDATE: After trying it with a different Wii Remote, it seems to stay much more calibrated, but it still drifts a little bit. I also took the jacket off, so it's possible that that helped. I have no way to be sure which, though.

Nintendo Wii: Wii unable to read disk after optical drive replacement

Hello,
My Will had an issue where the optical drive would make clicking noises and then produce a read error in the main menu. After doing some research I decided to replace the optical drive. Upon replacing the drive it made similar noises and now the Wii black screens with an error "eject the disk... /power off". I have tried reseating the power and ribbon cable on both the drive and mobo sides. I have tried cleaning the old drive and reinstalling it with no success. I have inspected the ribbon cable for damage and have found nothing alarming. I have also checked the mobo for possibly blown components (with naked eye so take with a grain of salt). Im at a complete loss for troubleshooting and could use some help.

I should also note that after going all the way down to the motherboard are reseating the ribbon cable the Wii will now spin the disk, make some kind of happy noises, then start clicking, fans will kick and then the drive will stop spinning/attempting to read but no error will be produced. If I try to insert a disk the second time then it will error out. (I have tried with plenty of disks).

Please help I want to keep this thing alive, and would like to not fully replace it.
I will take all the help and suggestions I can get. Thanks for reading all of this <3

Update (10/29/2022)

Update:
After reassembling the Wii (with new drive), it was temporarily able to read disks. I had booted the console with the disk in the drive and it worked just fine. I then ejected the disk and put in a different one to test and the it failed again (without error). I then tried putting in the first disk again and it errored w/black screen.
(Same as before with the first read attempt always resulting in nothing while the second attempt black screening the device.

This inconsistency leads me to believe that there may be underlying software / firmware issues, the only reason I have my reservations with this theory is the fact that the Wii has likely been running this firmware for the past 16ish years without fail.
I also checked the drive hardware and all of the processing components have identical model numbers (this does not rule out possible firmware incompatibility but does probably rule out hardware incompatibility).
Granted if it was a firmware issue then that wouldn't explain the failure of the original drive (especially after receiving a thorough cleaning) as having two issues (one hard one soft) simultaneously appear is unlikely (but not impossible).

At this point I'm just using this thread to sound things out for myself, so while answers are appreciated I feel like this will just be a block of text depicting my sad incoherent journey of spiraling into madness while taking to a wall that some poor bastard will stumble across in 4 years. (if that's you then cheers lad I wish you only the best). Well on to more testing!

So this is kinda hard to explain (if you need images just ask), I basically tried to clean the gears to make the disc spin but I can't get the plastic piece back on the gears correctly, and I also have another Wii with a disc drive that won't take discs (it did once but then it stopped taking discs again), so I just wanna know why that disc drive is doing that as well.
Nintendo Wii: My Wii Disc Drive Light is unresponsive.

For about 3 months, the Disc Light on my Wii (RVL-101) is unresponsive. I’ve had mine for a long time, and it would flicker every once in a while, but now it’s completely off! I want to fix it, but I’m not sure what parts I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nintendo Wii: My Wii doesn’t turn on

We haven’t used my Nintendo Wii for a while, we’ve just tried to turn it on, and nothing happens. The light on the on button doesn’t come on and we’ve tried it in several plug sockets.

Does it need repairing?

Nintendo Wii: Wii disc laser not functioning

I have a white first-gen Wii that will no longer read discs. Said Wii was used at least once weekly for a long time before it stopped reading discs. The disk drive still spins up fine and the rollers still work well. I took the Wii apart, cleaned the laser with isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip, tested Wii again, and still will not read discs. I have tried several known good discs on Wii after cleaning laser. I was wondering/hoping if there is anything else I can try before replacing the disc drive?

Nintendo Wii: Disc Drive Laser (3350) Has a functioning laser but wont read

Opening up several drives today and all of them seem to have a functioning laser that moves, however they still errored. I read that it may be a calibration issue, just wondering if anyone has any insight on this problem or any other issues that could be causing the error. Going to buy a multimeter now and then test for calibration. Wish me luck

Nintendo Wii: Clicking disc drive and black video out with audio

My unit on startup has a disc drive that's clicking and a black screen output, however wii remotes connect and audio out works. The issue is not with the cable or tv as I have tested several other units with the exact same setup with all of them behaving correctly. I tried resetting the resolution, and also the console doesn't require a hard reset to turn off. I also saw a split second of janky/inverted video when testing it just now.

Can a faulty disc drive cause the wii to freak out this much? My original guess was an unseated bluetooth module was to blame as I read several posts about that, however my remotes still connect fine so I'm guessing that's not the issue? Any guesses to what is causing this?
