Nintendo 64: Power but no video.

My n64 would show video for a short time, then cut out to a green screen. So I did the credit card cleaning trick. And cleaned around the power supply and stuff because it wasn’t that great.

Then it worked for about 30 mins and did the same.

So I took it apart and did a bit of a deeper clean on the game cart slot and now I get no video AT ALL. It’s not even trying to.

Nintendo 64: Nintendo 64 PAL – No Signal After Reassembly

I have a PAL Nintendo 64 with the following issue.

When I first received the console, I disassembled and cleaned it. It worked fine.

Video quality was not great, so I replaced all electrolytic capacitors. The console still worked and I could play games.

After final reassembly in it's case, it started showing “No Signal.”

What I did so far:

Disassembled again, this time also removing heatsinks.

Cleaned everything again: card slot, AV cable, jumper pack contacts (even with 800-grit sandpaper).

Reflowed electrolytic capacitors and main chips: CPU, RCP, PIF, DENC, and jumper pack connector pins.

Tested various points with oscilloscope (I can share waveforms if needed).

Swapped my Expansion Pak with a new Jumper Pak.

Replaced power supply.

AV cable is brand new, so I don't think this is the cause.

Tried inserting/removing cartridge and jumper pack while powered on (as suggested in some threads).

At this point the console still gives no video output at all.

Any advice on what I should check next?

Nintendo 64: N64 Powers On Then Shuts Off And Won't Power Back On

I have a NTSC N64 and it originally powered on every time with no power issues, but would have a horrible buzzing noise with the audio. Tried a known Nintendo brand working power supply and that did not change anything. Also tried a known working set of Nintendo brand AV cables and that did not change anything either. Also tried it on a different TV and the issue was still present. I noticed if I move the power cord brick slightly the audio noise would be quieter but still present. I then de-soldered the power port from the motherboard and soaked it in vinegar then rubbing alcohol to clean any possible corrosion in the port and soldered it back on. Now the N64 will power on once and it still had the audio issue present but then shut off after a few seconds and wouldn't power back on. I re-did my soldering job to cross that off but it won't power back on still. After a while the power cord breaker will reset and it will do the same thing again. This is with a jumper pak installed too. I tried it with a known working Nintendo brand expansion pak installed and it made no difference. Motherboard, jumper pak slot and game cartridge slot have been deep cleaned and I don't see any visual issues either. Any ideas? Thank you.

Nintendo 64: Nintendo 64 issues including briefly showing no controller message

Picked up a Nintendo 64 console at a yard sale this past week. Noticed a few issues I am not all that familiar with. One is the no controller message. If the console has been turned off for awhile, then I turn it on, it will show no controller, but then within like 10 seconds the message goes away and the controller works just fine. Does the same thing with 2 different controllers. I did open the console up and looked at the solder points on the first controller connections to see any cold joints. They seem ok to the naked eye. Should I just try a reflow just in case?

Another issue is, I think there is something wrong with the shell. Game cartridges have a very tight fit going into the slot. Even if I took off the plastic piece inside and the 2 opening doors and just had the opening for the cartridge, it goes in super tight. You have to even pull the cartridge out with a lot of force. The console is a US model and the games are US games, so I know it's not a Japan thing.

Could it be the plastic might have warped? It looks normal. I never came across an issue like this. Another issue is the power button, sometimes when turning it off, the power stays on. I have to slide the power button up then back down to get it to finally turn off. Doesn't happen all the time. I took the console apart and took the button out and cleaned it and cleaned the console part where the button slides into. I also cleaned around the button itself. Still, same issue. Not constant, it randomly does this. Never seen issues like this with a N64.

Even the memory pack cover does not fit properly. It wont clip in and stay attached to the console. I had a spare one from another console and that too has the same issue. Very weird. It is just a basic N64 console. I dont see any mods or anything like that.

Nintendo 64: My Nintendo 64 turns on, but there's no picture.

I have an old PAL Nintendo 64 that I wanted to play the other day. Unfortunately, it wouldn't work. The machine itself turns on and the red light lights up as usual, but I can't get any picture on the screen.

Removing the Expansion Pack (original) and putting it back in.

To blow on the cartridge and on the machine (not recommended).

Different games.

Different AV cables (that work on my SNES).

Cleaning the connectors on a cartridge with both dry Q-tips and with isopropyl alcohol.

When I started the machine I didn't see or hear anything. The screen didn't even flicker. I retried the steps some time later and magically it worked. I've listed all the solutions I've tried, as I don't know which one solved my problem.

Nintendo 64: Vertical Stripes on screen during gaming

Hi, I have N64 plugged in to Smart TV but using the white/yellow/red AV cable as my TV has these inputs at the back. The N64 turns on and shows normal welcome screen. Black background looks fine. As soon as games are played with white background, all I get is thick pink and green vertical lines on screen during all games. Virtually unplayable, can barely read text on screen. Have no other cartridges to try (I have only got Super 64 cartridge with heaps of games on), so don’t know if this issue is: compatibility/console/leads/cartridge at fault. Can anyone help please? n.b. I am technically limited so any replies will need to take this into account! Thanks….

Nintendo 64: Why is my well kept N64 system starting to shut off?

Hello all!

One of my most prized possessions started acting up this week. My nintendo 64 has started to shut off on its own not long after I start playing games. I have removed a few of the possible problems with a few different tests. It is not a TV issue as this problem happened on 2 different tvs. I do not use an adapter to switch between several A/V devices. I am plugged right into the TV.

It is not a specific game as this happens with all games. I gave my system the basic cleaning with compressed air which helped nothing. Here is where things get interesting. When the system "shuts off" I lose all sound and the picture. The red light DOES NOT turn off. This led me to believe it was an audio video cable problem. I noticed for the first time today though that after waiting a bit, the game will sometimes come back on and shut off again.

The red light always stays on. The game itself starts form the beginning again every time the picture goes away which means its not just the signal to the TV I am losing, but the system itself is restarting every time. My next plan is to track down another power cable and see if it helps. I haven't found anyone who has one yet though. I might end up buying one. If this doesn't work though I will be completely stumped.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Nintendo 64: N64 Powers On, No Output, Voltage Tests OK

Background:

A client brought me his N64; his little kid broke the yellow plug of his composite cables at the TV, and now the console won't output at all (lamp on, no video, no audio).

Testing:

I've tested it with multiple cables and can confirm the issue. Gone through the following steps:

Cleaned inside and underneath the cartridge slot connector;

inspected all pins of each IC;

cleaned and tested continuity of AV port pins

Tested voltage at 12V and 3.3V rails

Tried different expansion/jumper paks

inspected capacitors

Tested voltage at each pin of the AV port (except RGB & Sync which tested 0 of course because it's not a modded system)

All tests were OK. Not sure where to test further. I'm leaning towards a combination of recapping (which I would've done anyway) and a new cartridge connector. Any ideas?

Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64 blank screen

Bought a N64 a couple of weeks ago. Bought Mario Kart and Super Mario 64, kart works but Super Mario doesn't (just blank screen). Bought another game and still doesn't work. Bought a third Super Mario 64 and doesn't work. Either I'm very unlucky and all 3 Super Mario 64s are dud or its the console. Any ideas to confirm if console or game? All 3 Super Mario 64 games show a blank screen (no input) but Mario Kart works completley fine.

Nintendo 64: turns on, but after there was no signal

I turned on my N64 with cartridge, then It had signal on my monitor.

but, after i turned off N64, and Turned on again, then there was no signal.

The problem is that every time I run my N64, I have to turn the monitor on and off. Is there any way I can get a signal even if I turn the N64 on and off without turning off the monitor?

I tried

:changed new av cables

cleaned cartridge and cartridge slot

take off the jumper pack, cleaned, and reinsert
