Motorola Moto Z2 Play: Screen replacement adhesive failed after 48 hours!

I was so proud to have replaced the screen on my Moto Z 2 Play. My initial fear was having a steady enough hand to apply any glue to secure the new screen. That’s why I was so relieved to find these custom pre-cut adhesive”stencils” for my phone. The difficulty level for a replacement was rated as “Easy”, so I went for it,

It was a bit tricky aligning that skinny border of pre-cut adhesive in the groove, but got it done and all ribbon cables reattached easily. I ran all the diagnostic tests and got all positive results. Then after 48 hours, every time an incoming (& later discovered) call came in, the screen went blank! It took me a while by trial and error to realize that the screen had started to lift in the top right corner where the proximity sensor is. If I pressed down on that corner, the data appeared again! At least it was a short term fix, keeping the phone usable.
i immediately did some more digging and found guidance from other sources than the iFixit Guide I used to replace the screen There I found reference to the fact that some initial pressure should have been placed evenly over the new screen, at least overnight!

No such prescription was mentioned in the Guide I used via iFixit!

I tried applying that pressure, after the fact, but if it had any effect at all, it reverted quickly. The adhesive kit for this phone came in sets of 2. So, I was going to start from scratch and apply the pressure initially. But, for fear of having no phone at all, instead, I kept using it as it was and suffering the annoyance of having to apply needed pressure and such. After a few months, not only did this annoyance become more eatable, but the screen began to progressively lift more and more from the edges. Sometimes, it would not fully respond to repeated “swipes up” to answer. Obviously the touch function and sensor were not functioning consistently. (I do have to admit, that as a procrastinator and for fear of making things worse, I lived with this situation for about 8 months!

Last month, I had the opportunity to get assistance with the repair from my nephew, who is a trained mechanical engineer that assembles small electronic components all the time! He thoroughly cleaned off the old adhesive in the “track” around the frame where the screen sits. He then redid the job with the backup custom adhesive sheet. He carefully applied heat with a hair dryer. Even then, almost immediately, the screen started to lift! I clamped it overnight and the next morning it seemed perfect. But as the day went on, the screen would lift again and the original problem reoccurred. Having no more spares, I continued to reclamation it overnight for the next 5 days, hoping the recurring pressure would ultimately secure it down. That never happened!

I am so stubborn that I am resisting to giving in and taking it to a repair shop and have to spend probably another $50 for their time (all the while doubting whether they even know they”secret for success”.

I subscribe to iFixit’s philosophy of not wasting by buying a new phone or being held hostage to high repair costs. That’s why I am annoyed that this potential problem, which I now am learning from the “Community” is quite common, was omitted from any precautionary comments. It’s a bit disingenuous and sort of “dishonest by omission”.

Now I see all the references to clamps for sale and cleaning kits! The instructions mention isopropyl alcohol ( which someone I trust told me will not remove oily residues and that I needed acetone to clean), but nothing about the adhesive removal pads I see for sale here!

So, now aware of this common snafu, can anyone help with a fix, short of starting all over? E.G., can application of some moderate heat and more pressure do the trick! Should I try the UV activated adhesives or B7000 mentioned in several posts, and if so, would it be better to leave the previously placed tape intact?

One of the reasons I am not settling for the answers to similar questions, is that most of them seem to be quite old (2011-2015), often referring to a specific phone other than mine. I venture to hope that there have been some changes and improvements to the solutions available.

Thanks in advance to anyone reading this and will take the time to advise. I hope there are at least a couple “tech mavens” who monitor and are likely to do so.☺️

Motorola Moto Z3: My phone won't turn on, and it's been charging for multiple hours.

My phone was working fine this morning from around 7-8 AM, but when I set my phone on a bench it fell screen first and now it won’t turn on when I’ve dropped it in the past this has never happened before. There are no cracks on the front or back, just a small scratch on the bottom right corner. Throughout the day I’ve tried different things (letting it charge, holding down the power button from 20 seconds to a minute, holding down the volume button, and power button from 20 seconds to 2 minutes, doing all of the above on a charger, and even with the charger connected to my computer) but nothing has worked. It’s been off for about 11 hours and has been on the charger for 2-3 of those hours. When I plug in the charger my phone attempts to start, the charging symbol shows up (white lightning bolts with a grey circle around it), it vibrates once, then part of the screen shuts off almost at the top of the lightning bolt and the screen dims without turning on. I don’t know what to do, please help. I haven’t contacted any assistance but I will probably stop at the Verizon store either tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. My phone hasn’t been in any contact with water by the way.

Moto Z: Replaced battery and screen, now it isn't powering on at all.

I work at a tech company and a customer brought in his Moto Z, we quickly determined the battery was the issue as it ran out within minutes, so we replaced it. The issue we encountered from here is we noticed the screen had cracked, so we ordered a replacement for that. When the replacement came in, we quickly repaired it, yet the screen stayed black. We could feel the phone vibrating, so we knew this screen was a defective part. We returned this screen and got a new, much nicer looking one than the one we had been given before (neither of these are from here, just providing details). We put this screen on and plugged everything in correctly, but now the phone does not turn on whatsoever. We feel no vibrations, and once again no image is shown on the screen. Could this be damage to the battery from heating the phone to melt the adhesive when reapplying the screen, or is there any other possible issues? Thank you to anyone who is willing to share thoughts, recommendations, etc.

Motorola Moto Z3: Why is new digitizer/screen not working.

A couple months ago my wife dropped her z3 and the screen cracked. It was still functional, for about a week, then it started to black out starting from where it initially cracked. I took it to a couple shops and they all said it was about $120 to fix it or I could order a digitizer/screen assembly and do it myself…being tight on money I opted to order the assembly and do it myself…I've done it before with no issues, so why not? Well, the new part came in, I watched several repair videos, read several write ups, took my time and was very careful. Old screen and digitizer were both cracked. New one went in pretty easily, but I plugged the phone in to test it before glueing it together and nothing. The phone vibrates (she's deaf so it stays on vibrate only) when it powers in, and when I touch the fingerprint sensor on the side, but I have no display and no feedback when I touch the screen. Could this be a bad replacement part or is it more likely something else is wrong? We'd really like to save this phone and the data on it if possible. She's currently using an old Droid turbo 2 that has a battery issue and has had a battery issue since it ran out of warranty…same issue with every white Droid turbo 2 I've ever seen…battery doesn't last long and doesn't charge well, and randomly reboots/shuts down…so she's already frustrated that she's stuck with that pos until her z3 is fixed.

Motorola Moto Z4: Phone no longer recognizes whether auxiliary cord is unplugged

I've had this phone for over 6 years, and have a preference for playing things over an auxiliary cable rather than Bluetooth if I can help it. In doing so, I seem to have worn out an important part of the socket. All other audio plays perfectly over its own speakers, but any music, notification sounds, or sounds from a game, it tries to send the audio to the device that it thinks it's connected to.

Motorola Moto Z Play: How important is the finger print scanner connection?

We replaced the battery in this phone before with no issues, but had trouble reconnecting the finger print scanner. When I opened it to replace the battery again, I do not think that the finger print scanner was plugged (we must have thought we got it plugged in and didn't - or it was plugged in and just looked like it wasn't).

When I attempted to reconnect the screen to the phone, the finger print scanned plug broke off. So, assuming it truly was just for the finger print sensor, we proceeded with reassembly, since that feature is not used by us. The display connection went back it great.

However, now that the phone is booted and charging, the touch screen is not working (the screen blips like it knows it was touched, but the options are not activating). Is this because that fingerprint scanner connection was damaged? Or is this likely related to the other problems I've seen listed where people's touch is no longer working after a repair?
