Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Bad battery, need to replace

Hello. I think I may need to replace the battery in my Surface pro 2017 if it gets any worse. Two years after I bought it I only get 3 hours of battery life. I see you have a surface pro 4 battery replacement video but I can’t find any specifically for Surface Pro 2017. Do the video and the tools for the Pro 4 also work for the Pro 2017? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Surface Pro 5 3rd touch failure. Screen replacement didn't fix the los

Hello everyone!

I am so lost and really don't know what to do anymore. My customers Surface Pro 5 has lost it's touch function after a windows 10 update. Also there is no touch input within the UEFI bios.

Since I am a technician, I installed a known good tester display with new cables and a working touch board. Nothing.

Got a new display from AliExpress with a new touch controller, it worked until the first reboot. Aaaaand it's gone.

I did check the AliExpress display on a tester surface pro 5 and it worked prior to installing it on my customers device.

After I installed it on my customers SP5 it no longer worked.

I feel like this surface pro 5 has a habit of frying display touch controllers. Checked the board for any heat spots or water damage but there is nothing.

All the voltages are fine and no capacitors or resistors are bad.

So what the hell is going on here? Do you guys have any idea what the issue could be?

Reinstalled everything as well btw and tried win 11 with no luck.

Had a similar issue with my personal Surface Pro 5 and had to replace the motherboard.

This is how ever a 1TB i7 board and it would a shame to trash it.

Best regards

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Do I need to change wifi antenna assembly?

I replaced the battery and while opening up the screen, I tore off the wifi antennas from its assembly. However, the wifi still works after putting it back together.

The one thing I am confused about is, on this model, the antenna do not connect to anything on the motherboard, or am I mistaken?

There is a little metal piece on the bottom of the assembly (3rd pic) which connects to the motherboard but that piece does not attach to the antenna whatsoever.

I have attached some photos of what the antennas and the assembly look like in my case.

Thank You in Advance!

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Pro 5 1796 not detecting new battery.

Hello all, I recently replaced the battery in my Surface Pro 5 1796, and upon powering it back on, Windows shows no battery present in the tablet. There is no battery icon in the taskbar, no battery settings in the Settings app, and upon checking device manager, it says that the Surface Battery is not installed in the computer.

Despite this, the battery is still sending power out to the system. I can unplug and use the device just fine, but when the battery dies, it immediately shuts off. No low battery warning, sleep state, or low battery icon from the UEFI when you try to power it up. Just a black screen.

This tells me that the battery is seated correctly in its spot, but something within the software is messing it up. I've tried reinstalling drivers, doing windows update, and performing a Surface Diagnostics Test, but to no avail. I have yet to try a full re installation of Windows.

If someone has any tips or solutions to this, please let me know. Thanks.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Heat Gun/Blower for Screen Replacement

I am looking at purchasing a heat/gun blower to replace my Surface pro 5 screen (warm the adhesive to weaken it)....as well as for other electronics.

I have come across 3-in-1 Function Heat Blower and Soldering Iron (see link below), which I thought could be helpful with other projects also.

https://www.jaycar.co.nz/3-in-1-function...

Has anyone had any experience using this type of "heat blower"? First thought is it may be difficult to control the temperature...although it does have a flame adjustment setting.

Started on the right speaker, which then cracked. So I moved to the left speaker and went down, and came across an existing crack which bent up, preventing my pick from moving the rest of the way. The same thing happened when I tried going up. So i'm pretty much stuck at this point. Any tips on continuing past where i'm at right now?

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Replaced Screen. Touch and Pen Problems

I dropped my Surface Pro 5. I ordered and received a new screen through Amazon. For a while, things were good, but then touch and pen functions started to deprecate. I did not drop it again, but I think I may have disturbed something when I replaced the not so protective but cute protective case with a more rugged (and expensive - worth it!) Urban Gear case.

I reopened it. I cleaned out some of the adhesive, mainly from the top where there is some copper (antenna?) This seemed to give me more consistent pen operation. I am thinking about removing and reinstalling the screen now that I know what to do. Maybe I will recover something that I missed on the first pass in the process.

I disabled the two HID touch screen entries in Device Manager, restarted, enabled, restarted. At first, I saw the little gray circles, but the screen cycled off and on a few times. They disappeared.

Do you think uninstalling the drivers will help or harm? I assume this would force Windows (11) to look for drivers again?

I hope it is not a faulty screen, since I am sure my return opportunity is gone.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Touchscreen only works when touching the case

I bought an used SP5 and replaced the screen. All went perfect and no issue seemed to be present. But after using it more, I found a problem with the touch recognition. I can only use my finger to interact while touching the Metall case of the SP5, when laying it on the table (or any other surface) it won't recognize the touch input. I tried every other troubleshooting tip (reinstalling drivers, firmware, resting or setting the calibration etc).

I do have a screen protector on the screen. Might this be the problem? Or do I have to open the device again? Maybe there's some current acting as phantom touch on the whole screen? Magnetic interference? Surface pen works flawless.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Microsoft firmware update failure caused touch input to stop working

Looking to see if I can get any help from here, as Microsoft has been incredibly unhelpful. Here’s some background about the problem.

I have a Surface Pro (5th gen, model 1796) which has worked perfectly for years until a Surface firmware update (11.8.82.3838) a few months ago, and after said update all pen and touch functionality ceased to work. After peering in device manager, it says that the Surface ME “device cannot start. (Code 10)” After some research, I found that an out of warranty replacement program was started a few years ago for Pro 4s with this exact issue, as once the firmware failed to apply, the Management Engine device had to be replaced. But since this is a Pro 5, Microsoft is telling me this has to be a hardware problem and I have to pay $450 USD to get a refurbished replacement out of warranty, which I’m not willing to do. If anyone’s interested, here’s the Microsoft Community post I made. It has the firmware information and my angry rant.

I’ve done a total reset, ran Surface Diagnostic tool, even did a Surface Recovery Image, reinstalled drivers, no dice. Touch does not work in UEFI either.

So, the question here— what are my options? Anyone with Microsoft device experience or knowledge of software options that could help would be appreciated. However, if anyone knows if this component is something that can be replaced for less that $450, that’d be fantastic too, though I’m pretty sure its attached to the motherboard.

TD;DR: Surface firmware 11.8.82.3838 broke touch functionality on SP 1796, Microsoft wants $450 to replace a device they broke, and I’m looking for other options.

06/02/2021 Update: Microsoft told me no dice whatsoever, and said I could recycle the device for a credit towards a new Surface, which is only $110 USD and that’s just wasteful. Still looking for answers.
