Microsoft Surface Pro 5: touchscreen stopped working after I connected a Bluetooth keyboard.

Hi. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 (Model 1796). My touchscreen stopped working after I connected a Bluetooth keyboard. The keyboard worked, but the touchscreen stopped responding. There was no drop or water damage.

In Device Manager, “Surface Tcon Device” shows a yellow warning sign with Code 10 – This device cannot start. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, restarting, and Windows updates, but nothing fixed it.

Could a Bluetooth keyboard connection cause a driver/firmware issue, or is this likely a hardware problem?

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Screen issue after battery replacement

Recently replaced battery for my surface pro 2017 (5th gen, 1796).

After battery replacement, device turned on and booted to desktop with no issues. Was able to access some stored files, etc. Device was shut down after that.

The next time I tried to power it on, the screen turns on for 1s, showing the 4-squares windows logo, and then blacks out completely, never coming back on again.

I've tried replacement parts (screen, digitizer board, the 2 flex cables connected to the display) and it's always the same problem (i.e. comes on for 1s and blacks out).

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: MS Pro 5 liquid spill on power Connect

I splashed liquid (gin & tonic with lime) on to edge of surface where Power Connect was connected. In rush to clear away liquid I did not notice when neon in male connector went off. I disconnected male connector as soon as I noticed. I left it for some time (24+ hours) to make sure that liquid had dried.

I can’t recall whether I ever got a power on before the battery had flattened.

I looked at the male connector to find it appeared to have melted the plastic between the contacts on the plug slightly. I tried cleaning the male and female components as well as I could. I tried another power plug from my MS Pro 4 but no neon.

Do I persist with trying to replace the MS Pro 5 Connect charging port or am I “flogging a dead horse”

The only reason that I am trying is because I thought it was a very minor spill. Although enough to melt one part of the tiny male connector.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5: Microsoft firmware update failure caused touch input to stop working

Looking to see if I can get any help from here, as Microsoft has been incredibly unhelpful. Here’s some background about the problem.

I have a Surface Pro (5th gen, model 1796) which has worked perfectly for years until a Surface firmware update (11.8.82.3838) a few months ago, and after said update all pen and touch functionality ceased to work. After peering in device manager, it says that the Surface ME “device cannot start. (Code 10)” After some research, I found that an out of warranty replacement program was started a few years ago for Pro 4s with this exact issue, as once the firmware failed to apply, the Management Engine device had to be replaced. But since this is a Pro 5, Microsoft is telling me this has to be a hardware problem and I have to pay $450 USD to get a refurbished replacement out of warranty, which I’m not willing to do. If anyone’s interested, here’s the Microsoft Community post I made. It has the firmware information and my angry rant.

I’ve done a total reset, ran Surface Diagnostic tool, even did a Surface Recovery Image, reinstalled drivers, no dice. Touch does not work in UEFI either.

So, the question here— what are my options? Anyone with Microsoft device experience or knowledge of software options that could help would be appreciated. However, if anyone knows if this component is something that can be replaced for less that $450, that’d be fantastic too, though I’m pretty sure its attached to the motherboard.

TD;DR: Surface firmware 11.8.82.3838 broke touch functionality on SP 1796, Microsoft wants $450 to replace a device they broke, and I’m looking for other options.

06/02/2021 Update: Microsoft told me no dice whatsoever, and said I could recycle the device for a credit towards a new Surface, which is only $110 USD and that’s just wasteful. Still looking for answers.
