Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Tablet battery won't charge via Keyboard

Hi, I have a surface book 2 15", it's 2.5 years old, it's heavily used, the keyboard battery won't charge, stays at 0%. (the Tablet battery is fine)

I understand the keyboard Battery may have died of age, if that's the case, I'll replace it.

but my problem is that the Tablet battery won't charge if I plug the charger in the keyboard port, though the indicator light comes on, the percentage won't increase.

it'll charge only if I eject the Tablet and plug it in directly,

My question is, Is it because of the faulty keyboard Battery or charger or something wrong with the keyboard base?

will replacing the keyboard battery fix it?

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Constant Attaching/Detaching of Keyboard and tried obvious solutions

Recently I have come upon an issue where the keyboard keeps attaching and detaching intermittently.

I am no stranger to this issue over my 2 years of using this computer. Usually I have to just clean the connectors and it works again. If that doesn’t solve the problem right there, a hard reset (power + volume up held for 30 seconds) usually resolves this. Also I can tell it’s the connectors because moving the laptop around or adjusting the screen pivot usually triggers the issue reliably before I clean it.

However this time I am stumped. I have cleaned the connectors (both the keyboard and computer side) thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. The screen can attach fine no problem and everything is working. Moving the monitor around, shaking the laptop, gentle taps, don’t trigger any upset to the connection. However the computer is now attaching and detaching constantly regardless of the conditions (moving or not moving).

The timing of this can be as fast as 10 seconds apart and as slow as 5 minutes apart between attaching/detaching interruptions. When it is ‘detached’ on many occasions the keyboard and mouse still work. Other times it actually interrupts their functionality.

Things I tried:

hard reset multiple times

cleaning thoroughly the connectors

making sure windows is updated

making sure drivers are updated

Only thing I haven’t done yet is a full hard reset. Looking to get my files/programs in order to do a full wipe and hope for the best.

The computer was working perfectly until after one quick site visit where I reattached the keyboard and used it as a bulky tablet. Right after I put it back into it’s original laptop form, the issue popped up. I keep thinking it’s physical but I am not sure what the cause could be. My highest suspicion revolves around the cable that runs along the hinge of the keyboard, connecting it to the pins (only a suspicion, I am not sure as tilting the monitor doesn’t cause any detaching issues directly). But I am at a loss as to how to check or deal with that.

Sorry for the long description but if there are any thoughts I can try I would love to hear them. I am out of warranty so dealing with Microsoft is a no go.

Thank you!

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Okay to clean fans with compressed air?

I recently have been hearing a low buzzing/ticking coming from the fans in the keyboard portion of my surface book 2. I’m assuming it’s from dust or hair(beard) that somehow managed to find its way around the fan. is it okay to blow compressed air in there? And if so which part is safe to do so?

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Is this a fry mark?

Found a Surface Book 2 from the ewaste. I tried plugging in with a type-C charger but it doesn't seem to be drawing any power (charger nor the cable are warming up). Holding down the power button to force restart didn't do anything. I haven't tried a surface connector charger yet, but is that mark on the surface connector an indication that some sort of short might've happened? This seems to be the 1060 dGPU model and it would be a shame for it to be left to the trash

Oh also warranty's already expired so unfortunately I can't Tom Sawyer this thing like I did with my 2015 Macbook Pro's battery

Update (04/12/2022)

So turns out the top seems to work fine after detaching it. I'll look more into why it wouldn't charge through the type C, it's possible that the power delivery circuit might be shared (given that the surface connector can also transfer data, it makes sense for both to possibly share connections). Unfortunately looking at the teardown guide the suface connector-side of the laptop isn't on its own daughterboard, unlike the usb-a connector side, and getting into it also would be really difficult regardless

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Can I replace just one of the batteries?

I’m thinking of trying to replace one of the batteries in a Surface Book 2 15” - is there any significant problem with either replacing just the screen segment battery or just replacing the keyboard section battery, but not both?

I just want to be able to unplug the unit and move it (separated or still attached to the keyboard) to plug it in in another room in less than 5 minutes without the whole device shutting down.

AFAICT, there’s no battery swelling, but neither the keyboard nor screen section batteries can hold any charge at all. There’s not even a one-second delay in turning off when the device is unplugged.

I’m not new to repairing devices, but I’m pretty new when it comes to fixing devices designed to defeat owner repair/maintenance.

Thanks for any thoughts, observations, or ideas.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Not charging after electric short? New batteries but nothing

Hi all,
I’m troubleshooting a Microsoft Surface Book 2 that stopped charging after a short circuit occurred at the screen-to-keyboard connector during cleaning. The device still powers on and works, but it does not charge. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

Replaced both batteries (in the screen and keyboard base) with new ones, but no change.

Replaced the charging port and the screen-to-keyboard connector, but the issue persists.

Visually inspected the motherboard for damage (burn marks, broken traces) but haven’t found anything obvious yet.

Confirmed the charger works (LED lights up, correct voltage measured at the port).

The device still functions normally when powered on, but the battery does not charge, and there’s no indication of charging in Windows. Also, there seems to be no connection to the keyboard because it doesn't come up on screen and doesn't respond too inputs. I’m comfortable with soldering and have tools like a multimeter, hot air rework station, and microscope.

Could the short circuit have damaged the charging controller IC, a fuse, or another component on the motherboard? Any suggestions on which components to test (e.g., specific fuses, diodes ) or how to trace the charging circuit? Schematics or pinouts would be a bonus if anyone has them. Thanks for any insights!

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Is the keycap for Surface Book 2 15'' the same as 13.5‘’?

Need to replace a few keycaps on the foreign surface book 2 15 inch due to the wrong signs. Can only find the one for 13.5 inch.

Are they compatible? Not the whole keyboard, just the keycap size.

Many thanks.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15": Washed IR band pass filter tint off the screen.

Hi all,

I was doing a Surface Book 2 battery replacement. First time doing any actual hardware repair work on a Surface.

It mostly went well, I managed to avoid cracking the screen or ripping any of the cables or antennas. But after reassembly, I noticed the device now has 3 eyes looking at me.

Normal ones should look like below, taken from a Surface Pro 5, note that the IR windows are black and barely visible on the left.

If I read the documentation right, turns out the Windows Hello IR module has a band-pass filter of 810nm applied onto the back of the display glass. The filter is painted or coated on instead of a separate module, it reacts with the alcohol used to clean the adhesive off the glass and is simply dissolved. That’s way my cotton swab turned purple after wiping, I thought it was the adhesive residue, but it’s actually the filter paint.

Any clue on how I search for the raw materials to get them back? Or is it even possible in DIY conditions? Do replacement screen come with working filter paint applied?

I suppose maybe the photography industry or car industry has something similar like IR filter lens or car window tints, but car window tints usually reflects IR instead of letting it pass through. Maybe there is a liquid self-apply variant?

To be honest, this is mostly a cosmetic issue, the Windows Hello facial recognition seem to keep working, however I’m not sure if it remains accurate or robust enough in various lighting conditions.
