Macintosh 128K: Disk Drive Not Working

After turning on computer, and inserting a disk, the drive doesn't engage and pull the disk in. Normally, you insert a disk and it gets grabbed by the drive and pulled down into the computer. Now, the "grabbing" part doesn't happen. I can't get the disk to stay in the computer.

Don't know if it just needs cleaning or the motor burned out. It kind of wore out.. it started to happen here and there over a year or so before it just stopped working all together. So, it seems to be a mechanical issue and not an electronic one.

Before I take it all apart.. I thought I would pause to see if others had any input on this. Thanks-

Macintosh 128K: Macintosh Classic: buzzing sound

Hi all,

So I have just received a Macintosh Classic from eBay, with a reported failed HDD but upon inspection it's clearly been knocked about during transit. A refund isn't an option as I got it for next to nothing, and I really want to get it repaired.

The issue:

Upon turning it on, there was no display but I got the chime sound. I opened it up to reveal the board on the back of the CRT had come loose, so I reattached it and booted it back up. Not it makes a horrible buzzing (kind of electric) sound, which made me immediately turn it back off. I reopened it and booted it back up to find that the sound was coming from the clear tube that holds the board. Also, you can see faint blue “electric bolts" from said (and pictured) tube.

As the board was off when I received it and I can hear it's coming from there, I think it's clearly something to do with that. But a more educated guess and/or some tips would be fantastic.

I have checked for bulging capacitors and all of the usual things and all appears to be ok visually. As I said before, when the board was off there was no buzzing sound, that only started when I reattached it. But when he sent it, I seen pictures of the same Macintosh displaying a faulty HDD image, so I don't think anything has failed due to natural causes in the time it took to ship it.

It's a Macintosh Classic by the way.

Many thanks in advanced.

Andy

Macintosh 128K: Macintosh Classic not booting to Hard Drive (SCSI)

Hello there,

I recently bought a Vintage Macintosh Classic Computer from eBay and when I first booted the machine up, It booted normally to the Hard Drive.

However a few hours later, i booted it up again (4th Boot I think) and it suffered the checkered board screen failure. Then I turned off the computer and then turned it on (kinda panicked when I saw the screen failure). Then after that, it booted normally, only to learn that in the next boot, it got stuck in the blinking floppy disk question mark which it has been doing so ever since.

Now I’m fully aware about this issue, i’ve reset the PRAM and attempted to boot to ROM. It seemed to boot to ROM fine, its just not the HDD, I have some valuable games and office apps there on the Hard Drive (I have no game and application floppy disks, just system and utility ones) and I totally don’t want to lose them.

So I don't know whats happened. I know the fact that the capacitors and speaker are failing but this is an issue I am suffering. I am somewhat new to vintage Macs so I am kind of aware of the dangers of opening a old Mac and discharging the CRT before working.

I’ll provide more information if needed.

Thanks

Macintosh 128K: Resurrect Mac512 400KB floppy drive?

Cleaning house and came across my original Mac 512. Hasn’t been fired up in many years, figured I’d give it a try. Good news is the electronics (boards & CRT) are working! Bad news is the floppy drive is jammed in eject position. I have an external 400KB drive, it has same issue. Took the external drive apart and can see, as reported on the web, the original lubricant for all the hinges and sliders has turned to glue. Got it kind of cleaned & loosened up, but not enough to insert/eject freely. I’m certainly willing to disassemble further and keep trying, but also wondering if perhaps anyones knows of a good refurb service for my drives or source for refurbed drives? Thanks!

Macintosh 128K: Macintosh Plus Analog board keeps blowing its Fuss and Thermistor.

Hi I bought a Macintosh Plus from Canada ( I'm from Ireland) and plugged into my step-down converter then I flicked the switch on the back and I heard a really load pop, so I opened the machine the 2.5A tube fuse was blown ( black sot inside the tube) and the thermistor at R39 had blown in half. I checked over the Analog board and I cant seem to find any thing else damage besides the fuse and thermistor, so I order 10 Ohm 3A Power NTC Thermistors and I received them today (a month later) I have soldered the new thermistor in and the fuse is still blowing and the new thermistor looked to be slightly damaged at the tip of the leg. I'm mainly wondering if anyone has experienced this before and if so did they find a way to resolve it ?
