Having an issue updating Mac Pro 4,1 to 5,1 firmware. After following the instructions for set up (disable SIP, have 1.5 pkg on the desktop), when trying to run the firmware tool I get "This program requires Internet Access. Please connect your Mac Pro to the Internet and Try Again" even though I am connected with ethernet. I can not find a solution. Firewall on the Mac is off so I am at a loss. Can anyone help? (I am new to forum posting, please forgive any errors)

I discovered that the replacement router I received from my internet provider a few months ago had the firewall settings to high. I set it to a lower level and the firmware tool worked right a way. Hope this can help someone else who may encounter this problem. Thank you as well to the member who responded to my question.

Mac Pro 2009-2012: 2009 Mac Pro won't boot with new RX 580

Hi, Thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2009 Mac Pro -> 5,1 and upgrade CPUs running OS X 10.13.6. I wanted to upgrade my video card. I have tried the Vega 56 and now the Sapphire Nitro RX 580. Using both Aux power ports. These were my results:

When I tried the Vega, it booted fine, BUT NO VIDEO. Thinking it may be a bad card I returned for a replacement and am waiting on that. Resigned to save for a PC build.

So I then purchased the RX 580 (nice blue card)! When I installed the card I get nothing. Just a click from the PSU and that’s it.

So I put my stock GT 120 card back in and everything is fine. Boots just fine. I tried the RX 580 again in the other x16 slot. “Click” was all I got. GT 120 back in boots fine.

I almost think it is a PSU issue; that maybe it is not putting out the power needed. The voltages on the aux ports is fine, but I have no way to test with a calibrated load to see if indeed the PSU is putting out the power it is supposed to.

Any thoughts? Am I doing something wrong or forget to do something?

Mac Pro 2009-2012: Apple Mac Pro 2009-2012 logic board

Hi everyone,

I get little confused about this line of Mac Pro. If I am right (if I am wrong please correct me with some example):

2009 / 2010 / 2012 have SAME logic board (the big board what is attached to the case) only diference is the CPU/RAM board ? That is what making difference between 1CPU/2CPU’s ?

So if I will have 2009 1CPU Mac and I will swap the 2CPU’s/RAM board (just the board with CPU’s and RAM what “slide in”) from 2012 it will work and I will have 2012 Mac Pro ?

Mac Pro 2009-2012: Mac Pro won't startup, I suspect the Northbridge chip

I read through several threads and guides here, but I'm a little stuck on getting a Mac Pro 4,1 (single processor) to boot up.

After my machine stopped working one morning, I tried a restart or two where it rebooted and ran for about a minute before crashing. Then it would not boot while hot.

So not yet realizing what it could be, I did a few of the usual things such as reset SMC, PRAM, change the pram battery, clean the memory and clean out all the dust. It was while removing the processor board that I heard the rattle of the spring... and then it bounced out... which I then discovered by reading this iFixit post that it was the Northbridge heatsink stay.

So I bought what I needed and replaced the stays. The Northbridge chip had hardened paste on it, but I carefully cleaned it off and cleaned everything else per the excellent guide and put it all back together.

But I still can't get a startup chime. When I plug the power cord in, I get the quick red interior light. When I power on, I get the quick red light on the processor board, fans blow, DVD drives spin (when they are plugged in) but no chime. I am down to a minimal configuration with no PCI boards in except graphics, and all drives disconnected except the boot drive.

When powered, if I press the DIAG button I get the green PSU PWROK, the amber 5V STBY and a green SYS PG. That's all, the EFI and GPU lights do not come on.

What are my next steps to troubleshoot?

Mac Pro 2009-2012: Kernel panic on startup after cpu upgrade

So, I was thinking of upgrading my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 Nehalem dual Quad-Core 2.26GHz to a Westmere 12-core but before getting my hands on such CPUs I thought I’d try out a couple of x5570 2.93GHz quad-cores (lidded, fitted with washers and 5mm thermal strips, I happened to have laying around.

The machine is firmware upgraded to 5,1.

I had to re-set cpu b about a million times before the computer would boot without any blinking power button or red lights on the backplane.

It boots fine with any of the two single processors on its own (with red light and fan at full throttle) but when both are installed I get kernel panic on startup.

I’ve reset SMC, started up with opt+R+P and nothing helps. It won’t boot in recovery mode either.

I’ve also removed the Northbridge heatsink and cleaned up the dried thermal paste and reapplied with new.

See linked picture of panic screen here: Kernel panic

Mac Pro 2009-2012: Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2012) - Boots up but no video output (black screen)

Hi all,

After a restart, my Mac Pro 5,1 boots up without video output, I can access the files and content via a networked computer, so I can confirm booting up is not an issue.

My Mac Pro:

Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2012)

3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

3 x 16GB 1066Mhz DDR3 ECC (total: 48GB)

1 x 1TB SATA SSD / 2 x 1TB SATA HDD / 1 x 4TB SATA HDD

Using a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display

I was running on Mojave 10.14.6 with MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB before the error occurred, connect to my 27" Apple LED Cinema Display through HDMI via QGeeM HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adaptor. The system boots up with the chime with a brief red LED flash on CPU tray.

Methods I have tried:

Reset PRAM / NVRAM (4 chimes)

Reset SMC

Replaced PRAM Battery (CR2032)

Connect to Samsung Curved LED Monitor (C27F591FD) via HDMI and DisplayPort

Connect to Apple LED Cinema Display via DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adaptor

Replace GPU with MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor 8GB OC

Tested both MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB and MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor 8GB OC on my PC - no issues

Tested the Apple LED Cinema Display with my PC via DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adaptor - no issues

When upgrading to Mojave, I installed the new OS to my 1TB SSD and kept High Sierra 10.13.6 in its original 1TB HD. To make sure my logic board is working, I replaced the GPU with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB and boot with High Sierra - everything works fine.

The only thing that I have not tested or replace is the power supply (I do not have the equipment to test), this is a gamble I am not willing to make if I do not know the cause of the issue, was told it was a GPU fault by a technician and bought one, yet doesn't solve the problem.

Kindly seek your advise / insights. Thank you!

Mac Pro 2009-2012: Installing a WiFi Combo PCIe card on my Mac Pro mid2010

Hi guys.

I bought a WiFi PCI-e card for my Mac Pro mid2010. It doesn't work even on Bootcamp Windows 10. The problem is that it came with a power cable which I assume should be connected to a USB pin on a PC motherboard, but as much I searched on my Mac logic board, it does not contain any of such pin. Do you guys think I can use a SATA power port, like the one available for SuperDrive? I appreciate your instruction.
