Mac Mini Mid 2011: Missing R56D coded SMD inductor where can I find one

Hi folks

I didn't know where to post it, but I thought I'd post it here. We tried to tidy up a friend's Mac Mini 2011.

However, it was given to the service before and the service stated that it would no longer be repaired and that the motherboard had to be changed.

When I took the device and opened it the R56D coded SMD inductor on the motherboard is missing.

If the service dismantled it, why did they remove it? Is a separate mystery...

My question is, where can I find this part? Even if I find a spare motherboard, I find it unnecessary to spend just for this part.

Thank you very much to everyone in advance.

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Uncommanded Restarts Eventually Leading to No Complete Boot

About a month ago my mid-2011 i5 Mac Mini started performing uncommanded restarts. Specs: 16gb RAM, original 500gb HDD in the primary position (thermal sensor intact), 500gb SSD in the secondary bay. At first the restart frequency was every 30 minutes to an hour. In time, the frequency increased - but I could get it to stay up for extended periods by running certain apps in the foreground.

Eventually it got to the point that the frequency of restarts were so great that it became unusable. And finally, it would not even finish booting.

In an effort to solve the issue, I:

1. replaced the fan. (it was getting noisy and obviously failing)

2. Replaced the power supply. (thinking the failing fan had over stressed and damaged it)

3. tested individual RAM sticks by inserted them, one at a time, into different banks.

4. Pulled the fan and shroud to access the drive connectors. Disconnected the SSD. No Joy.

5. Reconnected the SSD, disconnected the HDD.

Aha! It booted immediately!

Thinking I had identified the old 'original' HDD as the villain in my scenario, left it disconnected. Reinstalled the shroud, fan and bottom cover. Re-plugged my connectors, mouse and keyboard - fully expecting to be delivered from my discomfort.

Hit the power button and smiled as I watched the boot status bar scoot up to about 80%. Then... uncommanded restart! About one in six times it would finish the boot process and display the desktop, only to restart within 30 seconds.

So... I'm back to zero and my Mac Mini is a brick.

Mac Mini Mid 2011: locking up and freezing challenge re-booting

question answered that it is probably the Hard drive and suggestion is to boot from external usb drive.

Confused how this will work w/o OS on the external drive?

Also how will I get the osx back with all of the recovery partition on the new drive?

Will time machine have all of the info needed ?

Followed the answer on the original problem.

received an update to Sierra, now the computer is acting normal w/o any lockups.

The second question is where I needed to think about replacing the original drive.

Time Machine, I understand does not clone the original drive therefore what are the steps to set up a new drive or re-formatted drive to get the recovery partition on the new drive? Does it go back to Lion OS X? why would I need to re-install the original OS X?

Mac Mini Mid 2011: The machine suddenly will not boot (no chime, no video out)

Hey,

I have a Mac Mini 2011 running OS X 10.10.3. I was watching a YouTube video when the machine suddenly froze and "rebooted". However, there was no startup sound (chime), nothing at all from the HDMI output and the fan starting spinning on high.

I've tried resetting the SMC but nothing has changed. Just a solid power light, no chimes/beeps and the fan spinning on high.

Any ideas?

Mac Mini Mid 2011: HDMI out put quit working

HDMI port was working fine until 2/9/15, noticed 'gatekeeper' was updated that day, that night we plugged it in and 'no signal' on TV. Contacted Apple Community, varies answers for non working HDMI reset PRAM and NRAM, tried but nothing on this generic apple 'windows' keyboard is working. Tried different cord, didn't help. Was able to connect with the 'thunderbolt' USB cord and audio speakers. Looked with mag glass and flashlight this am and found a small shiny prong out of alignment. We are very fixit peeps, can I purchase a new HDMI output anywhere? Or would there be another idea you can give me. Live 125 miles (one way) to nearest Apple store and their genius's, can this prong be put back in place or will it need replacement? Otherwise...love my mac mini, no problems till now and we are very careful during transferring. Thanks, Cyndi
