Mac Mini Late 2014: Is it possible to add a PCIe SSD?

I'm looking to add a PCIe SSD to a Mac mini that shipped with only an HDD. It seems like it should be possible, since there's a port on the logic board for it. Where do I find the cable to connect the SSD to the logic board? Is this even possible?

The internet has been strangely silent on this topic. I haven't been able to find anything definitive from either iFixit or OWC, which are usually all over upgrades like these.

Mac Mini Late 2014: Mac Mini Chime Loop - No Video

I am working on a Mac Mini. Late 2014

Machine was working fine. I took it apart using the guide here to install a larger SSD, it went smooth as butter. Put it back together and powered it on using a bootable High Sierra Jump Drive, It took longer than usual sitting on a black screen but it did come up. It got stuck on the Apple screen for quite a while. I pulled power.

Now ANY time I plug it in it just keeps giving me the power chime over and over and nothing on the screen.

I even try it without a hard drive plugged in and does the same thing.

SMC Reset does nothing.

Any advise? Thanks

Left machine unplugged all weekend. Came to work Monday morning and plugged it in. It sent power to the usb ports and the fan spins like usual - but I get no power on chime. There is nothing on the HDMI output. I let it sit for 30 mins and it did nothing. (at this point I put the old hard drive back in with a proper OS installed, so it should boot up and run). After 30 mins I pulled power for 30 seconds and plugged it back in and its back to the same chime / reboot loop. Any help would be great. Thanks

Now the startup chime has some distortion to it. Off

With this device, Should it power on automatically when I plug power in?

Update: The startup chime is clear as a bell WHEN THE WIFI CARD IS INSTALLED. Any time the wifi card is not installed it gets scratchy and distorted.

I think this logic board needs a exorcism!!

Mac Mini Late 2014: Error VDH002 after replacing internal SSD

My internal drive was failing during a reinstall of the OS. I ended up replacing the SSD with an 500GB OWC Aura Pro X2 (OWCSP4P1T1MB05K). After getting the drive installed and booted I ran read/write test and was running over 700mb/sec for both. I ran diagnostics just to make sure everything is working okay and it came up with an error VDH002 "There may be an issue with a storage device." Is this just because it isn't the OEM drive or is there something else I need to be worried about? Thanks.

Mac Mini Late 2014: PPM002 Error in Diagnostics but memory tests pass

Hello

I have a Mac mini Late 2014, it works fine when im using it but cannot update OS not install new one, each time I try to do it, it comes with up error and points to running diagnostics due to a hardware fault. Ran diagnostics and came back with PPM002 error pointing to an issue with memory module (crappy onboard on this version of Mac mini so can't replace). However when I Run a memory test software like Rember (I've tried a couple of others too) all memory tests come back with no issues. I've attached pics of the diagnostics screen as well as the memory tests.

Mac Mini Late 2014: Can the Mac Mini support 5 SATA drives after some modifications?

Hello!

I have two old PCs and one of them is a MacMini Late 2014 edition (without the SSD). I am trying to start a project to build a home server. I am not a pro here so if there are any critical steps missing let me know, but here is my plan:

Install the SSD Flex Cable Adapter along with a NGFF M.2 NVMe SSD Adapter. Both of those products should be compatible according to my research.

Attach a NVMe to 5 Port SATA Adapter to the new M.2 slot.

Do some DIY enclosure modifications...I'll probably just drill a hole in it for the cables or something.

Power the drives with an external power supply.

Flash and run TrueNAS on the MacMini

I'm just unsure if the MacMini will recognize the 5 dives connected to that SATA adapter. I'm also unsure of how big of a bottleneck all of those adapters chained together will be in terms of speed if it can recognize all 5 drives.

If anyone can shed some light on this idea for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Mac Mini Late 2014: Mac Mini internal speakers have no sound

Hi all, I received a Mac mini as a gift and the internal speakers do not output any sound or boot chime. The machine works fine and boots as per normal however no sound is output from the speakers. I have replaced the HDD however the speaker issue was before this. I’ve taken a speaker (assumed working) from a 2012 Mac mini and put it in the Mac mini 2014 and it doesn’t work either. I require assistance on troubleshooting or attempting to fix the speakers. I haven’t tested if the speaker is getting the right amount of power with a multimeter yet. However how much Voltage should it be getting?

Mac Mini Late 2014: Replacement fan stops dead then revs up to max rpm, rinse, repeat

The original fan in this Mac Mini Late 2014 had a buzzing noise develop so I ordered a used Mac mini fan from ifixit, installed using the very clear instructions on the site (I love ifixit!), replacing the thermal paste in the process. The replacement fan worked fine for a while but in the last few weeks it has intermittently stopped spinning, reached ‘0’ rpm, then revvs up to max rpm, back to ‘0’, up to max rpm, then settles to the auto-set speed or the manually set speed.

The zero-to-max rpm cycle can repeat 2-4 times. This phenomenon is increasing in frequency. I’ve been monitoring the internal temps and fan speed via Macs Fan and I’ve seen high temps when this occurs, it’s possible that I’m not seeing all instances of the problem and just notice the fan is off when I hear it revv up. Today I shut down and reset the NVRAM and SCM and the problem started again about an hour after restart. Only app open was Chrome to stream a radio station.

What might be happening?

Mac Mini Late 2014: Upgrade PCIe or add SATA ssd to Mac Mine late 2014?

Background (and confession):

I have a 2012 Mini which I upgraded in 2021 with the Mac Mini Unibody 1TB SSD Upgrade Kit. Because that Mini's OS is no longer update-able, I just bought a used late 2014 Mac Mini 3.0 i7 with a 256 SSD. I thought I'd just swap the SSDs--puting the SATA 1TB from the 2012 in the new one, but I clearly didn't do my homework well. When I got the 2014 apart, I realized the SSD is PCIe (of course, you're thinking, right?), so it won't go in the 2012 to swap. And when I tried to put the 1TB SSD in the bottom section of the drive carrier, it's cable won't reach the connector.

I need at least 1TB on the new machine, since it's the main computer for household files, photos, music (all backed up, in cloud and external) I've read numerous discussions that my options are to 1) simply upgrade the PCIe (the most expensive option) using a 1TB OWC Aura Pro x2 SSD, or 2) a dual drive option, leaving the 256 blade in and adding a SATA drive below it in the underside of the carrier (I have both the 1TB SSD from the 2012 kit, and the original SATA HD, currently in the IFixit external case as a TimeMachine disc).

My questions:

1) Which option would you recommend? And in the case of option 2, what's the best config? And does it matter much if I use the SATA HD or SSD?

2) As mentioned above, the drive cable currently on the SSD SATA doesn't reach the connector on the 2014 logic board. Is this the one I need to do that?

3) I don't have the parts (grommets and screws) necessary to mount the SATA drive securely to the carrier if I go that route. Can you direct me to where I can find those? iFixit seems to only have them in a Dual Drive Kit for the 2011 and 2012, along with tools I already have.

Grateful, in advance, for any help you can offer.

Mac Mini Late 2014: usb 2 external ssd slow to boot

hello I have a samsung T7 ssd connected to my Mac via usb 3, it seems very slow and the system takes a long Time to boot up, and open applications, I have run black magic disk speed test and get these results 37.1MB/s write and 34.7mb/s read, I have also tried connecting the drive with the usb-c cable using a usb-C to usb A adaptor which I get speeds of 400mb/s read and 380mb/s write but I have found this connection frustrating because I Have the machine set to shut down on a Friday and boot on a Monday ,and when the drive is connected via the usb-c to usb-a adaptor and tries to to boot on Monday on the screen I get a file with a flashing question mark and I have to restart with the power button and it boots and runs until the Friday shut down , any ideas why the drive would be running slow or not able to be found when set to boot up on a certain day.

thanks in advance

Mac Mini Late 2014: Upgraded to SSD, Mac starts but no boot ... No display, no keyboard

Hello I did'nt find better suggestion searching here. Here is the issue I've got with the late 2014 mac mini I've purchased second hand.

It was working when i bought it ( 2,5 ghz processor, 8go Ram, Apple keyboard)

carefully switched the internal 1To HDD with a samsung Evo SSD ( 500 gb)

Did start the mac and heard the POST " chime" sound once. Did shut down ( I had no screen nor keyboard connected).

After that , on next startup the "chime" POST sound never came back. I assumedthere was connection fault so I've checked everything and teardown/ remount several times since...

connected it to a display with hdmi or mini display to vga ( both working with another mac) : no display whatsoever

The power LED is working, no blinking

The MAc mini heats but the Fan doesn't start

caps lock of the USB apple keyboard doesn't work

USB wired mouse does get power from usb and blnks

external HDD mounted on a SATA / Usb 3 adaptor does get power and blinks

no way to reinstall mac Os or to boot on the recovery , as I get no display and no keyboard access.

did tryed to clone my MBP SSD to the internal SSD ( one more disassembly / assembly) , but no result.

and now I just can't put the WI fi antenna back , maybe I've pinched the small connectors.. but I can live without WIFI :)

So I've heard about bootloader damaged or something like this, that could be helped with another mac and target disk mode start the Mac mini... That could work using a generic wired keyboard rather than the Apple USB wired keyboard, but it sounds weird.

* Does somebody know how I could fix that mess , or did i have bricked this cheap mac mini ? Is there another way to restore the system ?

by the way thanks your for your helps and toolkit and advices.
