MacBook Unibody Model A1342: My MacBook is frozen and it will not shut down. What's wrong?

My MacBook has been frozen for two days now, and I can't turn it off. I have tried the power button as well as command, control, and power buttons simultaneously with no result. I can move the mouse, but I cannot do anything when I try to give a command. When I push the power button, the screen goes black. And when I turn it on again, it looks like it goes to sleep and wakes up on the same screen. Any suggestion?

P.S I haven't tried to take out the battery because I'm scared maybe something worse will happen.

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: SMC won't reset. Is there another way?

My MacBook won't sleep without immediately waking up, and won't shut down without immediately restarting. I can turn it off by holding down the power button, but it still turns back on when the magsafe is plugged in.

It seems like I need to reset the SMC, but when I follow the instructions to do that (turn off computer, push left shift-control-option-power) it just turns on. Is there another way to reset the SMC, or is there something that I'm missing?

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Battery not detected, won't charge; strange connector on logic board?

I repair MacBooks as a hobby, and have worked on quite a few A1342 models. I'm working on one now that has me stumped by a couple of things.

Problem: The main problem with this computer is that the battery is not detected and therefore it does not charge.

Things I know:

- Charger will turn orange for approximately 3 seconds when you first power on, but then resets to green

- No water damage

- Computer displays "there are no available batteries" in top right of screen with [X] where the battery should be when booted into OSX

- I think I was able to get it to say "not charging" a few times (I think this was immediately following the slew of SMC resets), but I can't get it to repeat that now

Things I've tried:

- I have tried multiple, known-good batteries

- I have tried multiple, known-good chargers (both 60W and 85W varieties)

- I have tried multiple, known-good magsafe boards

- I have reset the PRAM (cmd, opt,p,r) and SMC (shift, ctrl, opt, pwr) multiple times

- I have tried the "power button down for 10 seconds" and the "power button down for 5 seconds, plug in charger, wait 5 seconds" methods, each to no avail

- I have re-installed OSX, both Snow Leopard and Lion

- I have tested the RAM and RAM slots, both are fine

Is there some fuse that controls battery recognition/charging that could be blown? Similar to the way the backlight fuse can blow, etc. If not, what should I check? There's no water damage and no other damage. I don't have a schematic for this board (820-2567-A) so I can't tell where the battery/charging circuit is.

Other things I noticed:

- This logic board, for some reason, has a connector on the board that I've never seen. I searched on eBay and Google for a picture of one like mine, but could not find any. It looks just like the bluetooth board connector (and is in fact located right next to it, near the fan) on the logic board, but it's twice as long (same width and pin layout and everything). What is this connector for? There's nothing to plug into it in the case, and I've never seen one before. It looks factory-done.

Edit: I can't get it to let me post a comment to your answer, so I'll just edit here.

I have tried everything you mentioned with no success. Something else I noticed tonight, though, which is very strange, is the fact that the laptop WILL run off of battery perfectly fine! I accidentally pulled the charger out while booted into OSX, and the laptop stayed on...so I left it unplugged. It ran fine for 10 minutes off of the battery, despite showing the "[X]" icon in the top right (it tells me there's no battery available, but I'm running off of it).

When I plug the charger in right now, running from battery and booted into OSX, it turns orange, but then to green, so not charging.

I'm baffled. The computer still is not charging, but now it shows the "[X]" although it runs from battery fine (the screen even dims when I remove the charger...so it obviously detects the change in voltage from charger to battery power.

Any clues?

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Faulty / loose USB ports

Hi

I have a late 2009 model MacBook 13

Inch. The USB ports on the side are starting to become less reliable than they should. For example when I plug a USB in, most of the time it will connect properly, but then it will disconnect automatically. I'm pretty sure this is from the connectors cords being loose. Is it a possibility to replaced that section and the board with those ports in. Or would it be easier to buy a new laptop?

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Where on the logic board are the power-on pads?

Hi Everyone!

I don't get many A1342s, but I have one now that gets a green light but won't power on, so I'd like to try jumping the board, but I can't find a reference to the location of the power-on pads for this model. I've tried swapping RAM, cleaning the board, and all the usual stuff. If anyone knows where they are, I'd appreciate it.

FYI, this is the "unibody" white MacBook, not the earlier A1181 model.

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Battery indicator stuck at 53%

I have left my MB in charging mode for night, but in the morning i have discovered that it was still in charging mode and battery indicator showed 53%. Since that time i have reseted it few times (SMC) but it haven't helped :( after charging, time life shows 4 hours, but percent still shows 53% and percentage do not moves however, hours goes down...

i have also retrieved system information several times, which told me that my battery is not fully charged and after 26 cycle of full charging it has 89% of capacity

but it does not matter is it really fully charged or not, it just shows 53% and half charged icon :(((

system tells that battery condition is OK

i cant remove the battery due to specific construction of unibody, and cant bring it to service center because, there is no service center in the country where i'm living now.

also magsafe never turns in green due to system never tells that it is fully charged

i have tried to reinstall mac OSX two times and i have tried windows 7 too, but no results. windows tells that it is plugged in but not charging. and 53%!

i think it's cant be hardware, might be it's drivers of mac OSX ???? something like power management ? it would be great if macbook had something like BIOS but i could not find it

HELP! SOS! who can solve the problem.

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Black screen after water spill, no picture

I was unlucky to spil water on the screen (not on the keyboard). I could see the water drops out of the bottom of the screen. Then I let the MB dry for a couple of days. When I turned it on the startup picture showed and then it turned black. After a new restart the same thing happened, startup picture for a few seconds and then black. Now there is no picture at all. I inspected the LVD cable to the LCD and it seems it had got som liquid. Cleaning it with alcohol did not help. Now there is no picture at all. So the question is - I guess the LED is water damaged. Do you think it would be enough to change the LED or do I need to change the LVD cable also? There is no sign of spill on the motherboard. Thanks for any help!

Forgot to say - the MB chimes on startup and I hear the drive working hard so I guess it is in working condition besides the LED.

Update

I need help on this same issue. Wife spilled tea on key board of a 2008-09 era macbook, model no. MB466LL/A. LCD Screen went immediately black. Tried opening up back and drying out. Also tried replacing the LCD. New LCD still black. Externl video cable works on a large screen tv. Computer processor appears to work fine, hard drive, usb, all applications, etc.

Not sure what to replace to fix. I see that Mayer recommended replacing the LDVS cables. Newegg has them for $16, not the 90 to 400 you mention above.

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: My display is slowly fading to white. Why?

The display on this mac will either fire up fine then slowly fade to white. Or if you move the display around it will distort (lines) and fade to white. I have over 50 machines that are this model and it has happened on quite a few of them. I am tired of sending them to the Mac stores and would like to repair this myself. I have done a bit of other research and some indicate that it could be the lcd flex cable ribbon. What are your thoughts? Have you seen this before? Do you sell this part?

MacBook Unibody Model A1342: Display issues, darker on one side of the screen

Hi

I'm sure this has been asked before.

I replaced the battery in my friend's MacBook yesterday without a hitch and the display was fine.

My friend contacted me last night to tell me the display brightness is off, it's darker on the left side and normal brightness on the right.

I tried zapping the PRAM, resetting the SMC and even ran the AHT (Apple hardware test). The AHT said no issues.

I took a photo of the display and its attached. It might look like it's completely black in the photo but in real life, it's just darker.

Is the display going bad, (inverter cable or LCD cable), a graphics card issue? If it's the display I could replace the display entirely or cables myself.

My guess is it's the display, inverter or LCD cable perhaps.

If you need more information, let me know.

MacBook 6,1, unibody, late 2009, OS X Yosemite, 10.10.5. 8GB of RAM.
