MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Randomly shuts down when not connected to an external display.

Hi, this is my first post on ifixit so bare with me.

About a couple of months ago i was away from home and my Macbook randomly shut itself down. It kept on doing this so i did a bit of googling and thought it may of been the heatsink not keeping the CPU cool enough so it went into protect mode and shut down. I took my mac apart and saw that the heatsink wasn't looking too great so i decided to change it just incase that was the problem.

After fitting the new heat sink the problem went away. Since then I've been using my macbook pro as a desktop. Connected to an external display with a keyboard and mouse. The problem hasn't been happening. Great! Or so i thought until the other evening when i removed my laptop from my desk and tried using it elsewhere.

I've troubleshooted the SMC, reinstalled OSX, tried it in safe mode (Which worked), tried a new user account, disconnected everything one by one to see whether something triggers it... Nothing but disconnecting the external display seems to trigger it to happen.

So in brief. My macbook will only run for about 10 seconds without an external display before the screen goes black and the keyboard lights and fans stay on then turns off.

Please help if you can.

Thanks,

Dom

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: What is the quality of the MacBook Pro replacement battery?

Added image: Coconut app showing my current battery status

The battery life on my Macbook Pro (15", mid-2014, retina) has decreased significantly over the past few years, from about 8 hours of charge to barely 2, and I want to replace it, but don't want to pay $200+ at the apple store.

How does the replacement battery ifixit sells compare to the original battery that my laptop came with? I could not find any mention of a brand- what manufacturer is it coming from?

Also, some repair shops have told me that the top case may also need to be replaced along with the battery. Is there any truth to this? Will replacing my battery damage the trackpad since the battery is glued in? Any suggestions on how to avoid damaging these other parts while replacing my battery?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: How to remove anti-glare coating effectively?

This is my progress on removing the anti-glare coating after 2 hours. I tried Listerine, 90% alcohol, Peek Metal Polish, anti-bacterial wipes, bleach, and nail polish remover w/ acetone (before I read that someone else damaged the glass itself because of acetone). Luckily, my glass is still fine. Unfortunately, I haven't made much progress as you can see from the picture. I'm confused to why none of the solutions isn't working for me. Some said that Listerine alone worked well along with a microfiber cloth. I tried that but since it didn't work I moved on to try all the other solutions I mentioned. Is anyone else having this issue dispite of trying all kinds of solutions? And is there any other alternatives that would make it simple to remove w/o much time being spent?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro 15" mid 2014 suddenly shuts down

Hi,

So, my MacBook Pro has had this issue for a good while. I just picked it up again after 4 months of collecting dust, to see if its possible to fix it.

We´ve tried changing the heatsink without results. Or at least positive results.

I can be surfing in safari or playing CIV V which is the hardest thing this machine has ever done - and it suddenly shuts down without warning. I tried stresstesting it today both CPU and RAM and nothing happened, until the stresstest was finished, then it shut down. And then i can start the MacBook again, and it shuts down after a minute, or it can take an hour.

I´m kinda lost here, all help or propositions will be appreciated.

It is a 2.5GHz with 16GB and 256GB SSD

Update (04/27/2018)

So, I sent it to Apple.

They switched out the motherboard(In February), and it hasn't crashed once since!

Yay!

As the title says, my MacBook is only charging with low wattage, there are two screenshots from coconutBattery attached.

It might have something to do with battery, as the computer was not used in almost a month. A service provider has tested every component and they said it is a faulty battery.

Have any of you had this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Apparently, the problem is within the logic board, the computer was dropped before and I guess some connections could have broken.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Flickering dots on display

Hi there,

a couple of days ago I suddenly noticed white dots randomly appearing on my MBP's display.

See:

https://youtu.be/nj5WNlZksUw

It's even more noticable on dark areas.

My first thought was GPU-related. But since my Mac has two of them (Intel Iris + GeForce 750M), I downloaded gfxCardStatus to switch between them and to my surprise, the issue persists.

Resetting SMC and PRAM didn't help.

Today I connected the MacBook to another display via HDMI and while I'm still getting these flickering dots on the MBP, the screen is perfectly fine on the external display.

Looks like the display is affected.

But since 400 dollars for a new display is a lot, I'd like to see what you guys think. Have you ever had this issue? Could it be anything else than the display?

Thank you.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Mid 2014 Retina MBP random shutdowns

About 5 days ago, I started getting random shutdowns. It isn't really going through a shutdown sequence I don't think, as there is no "dial". The screen goes dark, but there is still a glow to the screen. The keyboard light stays on for maybe 10 seconds, and then the computer turns off. When using the battery, it seems to happen more often, but it doesn't always happen when using the battery. Seemed to happen a lot around 60-70% battery. Sometimes it happens at 100% battery, plugged in or not plugged in to the original Apple recharger. Everything looks fine in coconutBattery. Sometimes it happens once every hour, sometimes it won't even let me log in. Temperatures look fine using Hardware Monitor. I was able to discharge the battery twice to 0% using Safe Mode. Sorry I don't remember if Safe Mode completely fixes this problem... seems I had a couple shutdowns while using Safe Mode too, but I can't really remember. So I'll try it again in not-safe-mode after I get it to 100%, but I'm not optimistic that the problem will be fixed. It seems I was reading solutions that maybe don't apply to my particular MBP. So to recap, this is what I've done:

1. erased hard drive, reinstalled OS X, updated completely

2. reset NVram/pram and reset SMC through various methods, including the official method (10 second hold with charger unplugged), and including disconnecting battery and holding power button for 2 full minutes.

3. discharged battery to 1% twice using Safe Mode.

4. ran D diagnostics at startup, it found no problems

I am trying to meet deadlines for my Master's Thesis, which is why I'm posting this now, instead of waiting until after my Apple Store appointment, or waiting until after my battery cycle experiment. I'm not optimistic that either of these will be the solution that works. I'm not replacing the logic board! I'll much sooner sell this thing for parts on eBay and buy another lightly used one. Mine has seen very heavy use for 3 years. But I'd rather just fix it!

Update (07/21/2017)

Oh, one more thing... when I log in to my administrator account, the screen flashes with horizontal white bars covering about 25% of the screen. This seems quite odd to me.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: 2014 15" MacBook Pro trackpad becoming less responsive

Mid 2014 15” MacBook Pro clicking on my trackpad is becoming less responsive.

It scrolls fine. Gestures work fine. Moving the cursor around is fine. The keyboard is working fine - responds very well. No issues there.

I’m noticing issues when I click and hold trackpad to do things like in Photoshop; to make multiple selections; to hold and select multiple words/lines of text; that sort of thing.

Occasionally just single-clicking is not as responsive. I have to click/hold with much more firmer pressure at times to make a selection.

Another example. Clicking and dragging an icon from the desktop; whether to the trash; or when I dragged the coconut battery screenshot to the image window of this forum... those are the kind of trackpad issues I am having.

I have not opened up my laptop to see if I see anything physical yet. I have no problem doing that. Coconut Battery says my battery is functioning at 99% capacity.

Is response issue common with this model or just normal wear and tear?

I don’t mind replacing/repairing myself (have done quite a few); or should Apple look at it?

Thx for answers.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro - How to use external monitor right from boot/login screen

My macbook's display is not working, and it just shows some lines for most part of it. But I can see(barely) it is booting and waiting at login. I want to connect it to external display and take a backup. The problem is that the external display becomes secondary display and I do not see the login prompt on it to work.

Is there a way to make the external display the primary display or to mirror display using some keyboard shortcuts, as I cannot see whats on the screen at all?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: The left hinge of my MacBook is suddenly very stiff

Hello everyone!

A couple of days ago, the left hinge of my MacBook Pro started to be very stiff. If I try to close my screen, it pops back open. I first thought that there was something stuck in the hinge, but I didn’t see anything. I tried wiggling the screen a bit, but it only made it worse. I am also a bit worried that if I open the case, the hinge will be broken and instead of being stiff, it will be very loose.

I tried searching the web, but I can only find MacBooks with loose hinges instead of (1) really stiff hinge.

Has anyone seen this problem before? I hope someone can help!

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Replacement battery has manufacture date of 2015-03-30

I just purchased and received a replacement battery for my mid-2014 MBP 15". Upon installing the new battery and firing up coconutBattery, it is reporting that the new battery was manufactured 2015-03-30. Is this correct or just an error? I really hope my new battery has not been sitting on a shelf for 8 years.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Replace trackpad sensitivity torx screw - doh!

Hi all,

Thanks for wonderful resource

Hope you're well

I know I'm not supposed to but I did it anyway and (forcably) removed the trackpad setting screw (i.e. the magnetic screw which, I assume, helps depress the trackpad and register clicks) and in the process I've cammed out the screw and possibly ruined the thread which is part of the top case

Thankfully I've managed to source a couple of new screws: one in case I cam it out again attempting to put it back in and two so I have a spare once I know what I'm contending with. I'm now less worried about the screw and more about the thread issue which could be a (costly) top case replacement.

Here's hoping the big THUDS while removing the screw were the screw camming out and not me demolishing the thread

Has anyone else successfully replaced this screw?:

If yes then how was putting it back

If no then how did you resolve

If I have ruined the thread what are my options?

I presume Apple screwed the screw in to begin with and it wouldn't be sold as a spare part if one couldn't simply screw it back in..?

If you have any insight into how this screw and/or thread works I'd love to hear!

[F]YI I've done a keyboard replacement on this machine - probably the most difficult repair - so not scared of getting my hands dirty

Lastly, can anyone confirm which torx bit correctly fits this screw?

Keep up great work!

Yours hopefully

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Replaced display assembly not working

I just replaced the cracked display assembly of my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2014. After turning on the MBP the screen stays black. I have checked all motherboard connections as well as the brightness and performed a SMC reset.

I then put the display assembly on another MBP to confirm the screen is working and it is on that MBP. So I know the display assembly is 100% ok.

To confirm there is no problem with the MBP itself I put back the cracked display assembly and it is working (although cracked).

So it seems I have a working MBP and a working display assembly. However when they are combined the screen stays black.

What am I missing here? Does anyone have a suggestion or idea?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: Internal display problems after repair

After I replaced a faulty right speaker in my MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2014, the internal display went awry. The screen is distorted, visually squeezed to the left-third, is fuzzy like static in an old TV.

What works:

External displays work. Both HDMI and DisplayPort. All other functions, like airport, keyboard backlight, FaceTime video, and all work.

What I tried:

I've reset PRam, SMC. Tried safe mode and recovery.

Cleaned any dust/dirt away from connectors with dry, soft toothbrush

One of the steps says be very careful not to touch the cable connector after removing it. Could it be that I did, and this is the result? I've tried reseating it several times and I see no change. Do I need to clean it, with what?

Images:

Login page. Internal display glitched. Functioning external display (in mirror mode) above laptop.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro screen is purple what is the cause?

I’ve already tried resetting NVRAM the systems screen stays purple.

I connected to a external monitor and works perfectly.

I’m not sure if it's the LCD or the iDP (eDP) cable is bad. The computer was never dropped or the screen is cracked.
