MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Dropped MacBook shows black screen.

No visual damage was found.

Mac was inside of suitcase and it was inside of a bag.

Mac boots up,I can hear the chime, but the screen is totally black, not even “light” black. Caps lock light doesn’t work.

I tried SMC,PRAM reset, didn’t work.

Reconnecting screen display by unplugging those two things didn’t work. I used this video

Reconnecting battery didn’t work.

I also tried SMC,PRAM reset while the battery was disconnected and Mac was getting energy from the charger. Didn’t work. I used that video.

What else can I do before changing the screen?I don’t want to swap screen cause it’s expensive.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Failing GPU: alternative to reflowing?

The GPU on my MacBook Pro is starting to fail every so often, leaving it with a black screen and no external graphics when plugged into an external monitor. I’ve got two repair shop opinions saying it’s the GPU failing. Because it also works just fine every once and a while, I think a simple reflow will fix the issue.

But here is the question: without microsolder experience/ability, is there something else I can do than pay $200+ for a reflow job? For example, one microsolder tech recommended that I pop the logic board (all by itself, disassembled from the laptop) in an oven at 450 degrees for 5 minutes. If that’s safe to do, I’d much prefer that to a $200 repair, as long as I don’t risk destroying the whole thing.

You microsolder wizards out there, what would you recommend? Or where would you recommend that can do the repair for cheap? I’ve already replaced the laptop, so now I’m just repairing to resell.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: [SOLVED] MacBook Pro Not booting up after battery replacement

I did battery replacement for my Macbook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012
Charged upto green light

When first connected to charge , heard booting sound , but lid was closed
After charge completed , opened the lid and pressed power button , nothing happens

Any idea

FYI : I have connected only one fan as I broke fan connector during disassembly

Solved : As the accept comment below, I missed the keyboard connection, so the power button didn't work. Realized this system started automatically booting up on charging and lifting lid

Thanks all for the response

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Difference between Mid 2012 fan and newer fans?

Hi! I've been having issues for a while now with the right fan on my mid 2012 Retina 15" MacBook Pro. It makes a constant rattle and I've finally decided to fix it. The problem is the fan for this specific model is out of stock/very expensive in most places because it's slightly outdated. I see that the fan for the newer model is more widely available so I'm wondering if I can use this fan instead? From what pictures I've seen, the mounting holes appear to be identical and the power connector is similar as well. Is there some incompatibility that I'm unaware of (ie voltage, airflow etc)?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Most Recent Airport Card Upgrade Possible

Hi Everyone,

I need to replace the airport card in my mid 2012 retina 15” MacBook Pro. I remember reading a few years ago that installing a more recent airport card in this model enables it to upgrade to a slightly more recent version of iOS than normally possible.

To clarify, I don’t mean installing the most recent equivalent of an airport card allows you to install the very latest iOS. It was something like installing a 2014 card allowed you to install the 2018 version of iOS…something like that…

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I figured if I’m going to do this, might as well push my system farther.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Is my heat sink broken?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 is getting really hot!!

In MacOS while watching YouTube or Netflix in Safari the temperature would reach 75c-87c in comparison the Late 2013 model 40c-70c, idle temperature is at 70c-80c while late 2013 model is at 40c-55c.

In BootCamp I would get lag stutter in CS:go with 100fps+ spiking down to 30fps every seconds or so. Also, I open up the MacBook to touch the heat sink the late 2013 model is really hot in the fan side of heat sink with fins as well the CPU and GPU when gaming while in the mid 2012 model is really exceptionally hot at the CPU and GPU but is cool or warm with ability to touch for 5-10 sec without issues at the Fan area with CPU temp at 90c but in the very far side of the edge of the heat sink it is cool, touching the CPU and GPU area would show really hot with instant release needed.

I have cleaned the fans and changed the thermal paste already.

idle

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Backlight died on my MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid-2012

Hi all,

My MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid-2012 "died" the other day while I was using it. Or so I thought, until I shone a flashlight through the Apple logo and I saw that the screen was working fine -- just the backlight was dead.

I tried to connect it to an projector, but that didn't work -- could it be that the GPU is dead, not just the backlight? I have a model with an Nvidia GPU and switchable graphics.

Interestingly, I left it for dead for a few weeks, then decided to open it. I didn't do much -- dedusted, pressed on one of the screen cable connectors, then disconnected the battery for 2 minutes and connected it back.

Eureka, it worked again! Backlight and all! (Didn't test connecting to a projector). But then, maybe a day later, it broke again, screen works but backlight doesn't (and again didn't check if connecting a projector works or not).

Some more info:

2 years ago it fell ~15 cm (6 inches), and one of the fans started to make noise. It's still noisy but the laptop has been working fine for 2 years.

On the day the backlight died the first time, the table was wet. I put it on the wet table around noon. It worked until ~10pm that night, then the backlight died.

None of the water damage detectors inside were colored.

I'm fine with leaving it for dead, but the fact that it came back to life for a day makes me think there might be an easy fix. Is there anything that comes to mind?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Is it possible to put the motherboard of a mid 2014 13" MacBook Pro?

Hi,

I strongly believe I cannot be the first one to ask this haha

i’ve got a mid 2014 13” MacBook Pro with a broken display, and a fully working mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro. I wanted to know if I can put the mother board of the 2014 in the 2012 and create sort of a hybrid, basically resurrecting the 2014 MacBook inside the 2012 body.

is this at all possible?

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Very slow charging with new battery

I have just replaced my battery with an iFixit battery and it charges at around 10 watts whereas as previously it would charge much faster. I have reset NVRAM and SMC and calibrated the battery.

Have I received a defective battery?

Update:

I have reset the SMC again after waiting for the battery to discharge completely and it is charging faster but the speed is steadily going down. At first it was 30 watts, it’s now at 21.

Update 2:

I have charged the battery to 100% and unplugged it and 5 mins after, the battery was down to 10 percent.

The “Design Capacity” is also dropping.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Display worked for 2 hours after Speaker repair and then gave up

I Just replaced both speakers on my MBP. It worked great at first, I was able to use my MBP for about 2h before it froze.

Now I can only hear the start up chime, but the backlight and display is not turning on at all.

I've checked all the cables and connecters that were reconnected during the repair. The internal display cables don't seem damaged (+ the display worked for 2h after the repair).

Tried to connect an external monitor via HDMI port which didn't work either.

What could be the culprit? Or maybe totally independent defect that didn't have anything to do with my repair? Weird coincidence then...

Update: I must have shorted out my logic board somehow. Ordered a replacement logic board and everything is working fine now.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012: Doesnt boots after screen replacement

So month ago i broke the screen while trying to scrap the degraded resin around the screen, today i got new display assembly and installed on mac, for picture yesterday i tried to turn it on with old broken display, it worked fine (i mean it started and booted ofc screen was still broken), today when i installed the new display and tried to turn it on it flashed a discharged battery logo and then turned off, while i was trying to charge it i noticed that fans were turning on and off in a cyrcle, i waited for a 10 minutes but mac couldn’t start up, it still was only fans interrupting rottation sound, i tought “maybe the battery is so discharged that it can’t even handle fans so it turns of as fast as fans start to spin” i unpluged the fans ribbons and tried to charge it that way, i noticed that cpu was heating, not much but it was like its doing some work, after time i tried to turn it on but still nothing happened.

I found something about SMC reset or whatever, when you hold the shift option and whatever buttons, that kinda worked, the fans stopped turning while i was holding the buttons and after i realised then the charger light went from red to green and everything started as it was, fans spinning mac not booting, im pretty sure that i have not damaged anything, (bcuz screen turned on for a second)

im not sure what to do, as i know this issue is kinda common
