MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Is it normal that iFixit batteries die after only 2 ½ years?

I've got a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina 13" that I want to keep because it's the only machine I have that works with a software that I cannot update —for several reasons, none of them important to the present issue.

This laptop worked flawlessly up till Feb 2021, when the battery died —seven years, kudos for the quality control! I had iFixit's for a good reputation brand and decided to buy a replacement battery to extend my machine's life. Well, the new battery worked as expected, but died suddenly on Sep 2023, just 2 ½ years after being installed.

Since I still had use for this laptop, I decided to buy another replacement from iFixit on Oct 2023. This battery lasted exactly the same as the first one: it died on me last month (Apr 2026).

So, I'm wondering if it's just me or these items last less than half —almost a third— as an original Apple battery. If I had known, I would have taken the laptop to the original service center for repair. Anyone from iFixit here to answer my question? Because I'm about to buy from another provider, since my two purchases didn't live up to expectations.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: My MacBook Pro powered on with black screen and dont show anything

I have a MacBook Pro 13 Retina (Mid 2014) and the screen has gone off and never comes back on again. It happend after installed Ubuntu 18.04 and refit.

At end of install I observe diverse graphic errors and force power off the computer (holding power button for 5 sec).

If the computer keep closed it works on external display over HDMI but not on it’s own display.

Anyone can help me?

I try different method to try resolve this but none works.

Reset SMC

Reset PRAM

Reinstall OSX

Recovery from Internet

Boot arguments (-F, resolution, etc...)

Disconnect Battery

Disconnect Display Cable, then reset PRAM and SMC.

And none of these work, the laptop only works on external display. But if I try open the display nothing happens.

I don't know what's the problem but seems resolution parameters of the integrated display, Ubuntu installer must be change this on firmware (it's possible?)

UPDATE:

Today i try again and get a error code in this test.

The log indicates:

"StackShot REason : Sleep transition time out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74

Failure Code: 0xd44517be 00000031”

Also i see various errors say that

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Can RAM be upgraded?

I just got a MacBook Pro and already regret not doing the 16GB upgrade. (For now, it's fine, but I'm thinking about the future here.) Is there any chance this will be possible—at least in the years to come?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: What is causing this mac to freeze up after booting? (UNSOLVED)

2014 A1502 here, Clean Installed Big Sur 11.7.10 without issue.

Fresh Thermal Paste & General Internal Inspection under a microscope (No Sign of Liquid Damage) internally it is very clean.

All connections have been re-seated / cleaned / checked and appear OK.

Tested with 2 SSD's both with a clean install of.11.7.10 / SMC / PRAM Reset.

The track pad & Keyboard are working fine during SSD Erase / Format & Clean Install, but at the initial choose country set-up or login window everything just freezes up... The Power button can turn on and shut down without any issue and the keyboard is typing all the keys in terminal (& when using an external display) so the KB & Track Pad appear to be 100% fine. Fan spin is normal and it is not getting hot.. The battery status is unknown (Not swollen) and chargers OK, but the issue happens with or without the battery connected. It has a new track pad cable although the previous owner told me they had already replaced that to no avail. No luck booting into safe mode and apple diagnostics reports no issues found ADP000. I have swapped out the I/O board with another same models part but it made no difference. The LCD Connector on the board is looking clean on the inside & outside. After all of these steps I have found that using an external monitor everything is operating perfectly, KB, TP, WiFi, BT, Camera and so on..... I firmly think the LCD itself is OK as I have also tested using another complete display assembly from a same year and spec model, but it still freezes. Has anyone encountered similar behavior before? Ask Ai ? lol

I have tried with HDMI & a thunderbolt cable connected, with and without an external display connected and switched to mirror display but it is still freezing when I am only using the internal display. The ports are all very clean with no sign of anything unusual inside. I really gave this a thorough look over. Very Weird.

I have tried to install just Windows on it and it installed fine, BUT when I tried to install the 1st set of drivers it restarted as normal and froze again.... Other than that I have tried just about everything I can think of, except running the system without the I/O board connected, but I think that will just make the system run in slow mode and not really prove anything...... Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Why has my MacBook Pro's screen stopped working?

So, somewhat recently, even with the screen in it's current condition, more than half the screen would function. For context, it has no battery and I have no replacement display because I don't have the money for a replacement, and all of a sudden, the screen shuts down and comes back up with no video. All there is left is a bunch of lines now cut off by a big white stripe separating the two parts- the former functioning screen from the actual broken part. I'm always careful with the computer and make sure not to drop the thing, so I'm unsure of what it could be. If you can help me, thanks and hopefully it isn't anything major.

Before proceed, I’ve searched here some similar questions and found also one where there is an attacched video with the needed steps. I’m looking for a written guide I can follow, but my question is, can I fix only the connector instead of replacing the whole keyboard? To do the fix I need to remote the battery and display or I can avoid? If I Remo e the battery how I will put it in place again, is there a special take I can found on Amazon that I can use?

I've removed the logic board of my MBP 13 retina mid 2014 to do some maintenance from dust. I've now assembled it back in place, and I'm unable to turn on the MBP. I've tried by removng the battery connector and to use only the magsafe, it will stay on amber color, but pressing the power button will do nothing. I've then tried connect the battery back and reset the SMC, the macook magsafe light will become green for a wile and back on amber.

Is there any other operation I can try to do? I'm looking at the connections on the logic board and all is correctly connected. The MBP was ok before I remove the logic board, any idea?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro 13 (Mid 2014) - Erratic Keyboard and Trackpad

Hi,

I am having a strange problem with my MacBook Pro (Retina 13in - mid 2014)

Specs:

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbo...

OS 10.13.4

All of a sudden the keyboard and trackpad have started to work erratically.

Keyboard works really slowly, I have to type each character multiple times and sometime it just spurts the same key multiple times.

The backlight of the keyboard is also fine.

For example:

press : ee -> e

press : s -> sssssss

press : tttttttttt -> t

Trackpad is also almost unresponsive.

I have already tried doing a NVRAM and SMC reset but no change. However, an external USB mouse and keyboard works fine.

I have already upgraded the OS to HighSierra but it didn’t work.

It is a dual boot system so when I boot under Windows 10, it tells me:

Unknown USB device (Set Address Failed) under USB controllers with error code 43 in the error description.

I have already tried uninstalling the drivers under Windows 10 or upgrading bootcamp drivers but of no use.

There has been no water damage and the computer has been used with sufficient care.

I do not think it is a battery swelling issue either since the laptop is holding charge.

Do you think the following guide applies to me?

Really strange trackpad and keyboard problem. MacBook Pro Early 2015

Is the assembly of Mid2014 version the same?

Thanks

Omer

Update

I just ran the diagnostic (CMD + D) and got the following error:

"There may be an issue with the display

Referrence Code: VFD002"

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

However, there is nothing wrong with display.

Update @danj

There was no water spill as such. I did spray a cleaner to wipe my screen some but I do not remember that any moisture went under the keyboard.

The battery seems to be holding power and in good standing. Please see the CoconutBattery results attached.

Update 19th May 2018 @danj

There is no visual deformity on either side therefore I am not so sure if "battery swelling" could be the issue.

I have come across a few forum threads on the Internet where people have put their laptop in plastic bag and have cooled it in the fridge for a few hours just to exclude the battery swelling as the root cause.

Do you think it is a good idea? Would condensation not damage it?

Could it be the problem with logic board? Then why does it work after multiple key presses? Or it is more like a driver / input buffer issue?

Here are two videos to give you an idea what I mean:

All the keys are working but sometimes need to be pressed multiple times.

Trackpad response after multiple swipes.

I have also tried booting into Ubuntu via USB stick, hoping the standard USB drivers might solve the problem but it did not help. Had the same problem under Ubuntu as well.

Update 20th May 2018 @danj

Thanks again Dan for your help!!

Here is a screenshot from TG Pro

after 15 mins

In both cases, no change in keyboard or track pad behavior.

Update 22nd July 2018 @danj @mayer

In the meantime, the issue the keyboard has 90% resolved i.e., it does skip a character but not as bad as it were in the beginning.

However, the track pad has now gone completely dead. It used to move after a few swipes.

I asked Apple support to have a look at the laptop and they are recommending

a top case replacement since they think it has got something to do with the top case.

Most likely it is the bus which connects laptop and track pad. They were not specific if it goes through USB controller or via their own standard.

They have also confirmed that battery is also fine, logic board is fine and there has been no water damage.

Do you think a top case replacement is necessary or we can also repair/replace this bus.?

Update 9th Aug 2018 @danj @mayer

I’ve had it professionally checked and the shop tells me that the “Trackpad controller on logic board” is defective. The solution is to change logic board, trackpad and the battery.

As such the battery is fine but it will be removed to do the repairs anyway so it is better to have it changed.

Do you think I need to change all these parts of the repair job could be simpler?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro won't turn on

Hello,

About a year ago my mid 2014 MacBook Pro stopped turning on seemingly out of nowhere. The only odd thing I noticed from first glance is that when I plug in the MagSafe cord, the light doesn't turn on. So far it has shown 0 signs of life (no fan sound, display off, etc). I haven't gotten around to fixing it until this week and here are the things I've tried to no avail:

Resetting the SMC (removable battery method from here)

Resetting the NVRAM (didn't do anything since mac can't boot in the first place)

Holding power button for 15 seconds

Swapping my MagSafe DC with my friend's, who has the same exact Mac model. My MagSafe DC worked perfectly fine on his Mac, but when I used his on mine, it made no difference.

Disconnecting the SSD and trying to power it on

I'm completely lost now and I'm unsure what to try next. A side note is that before my mac stopped turning on, my speakers stopped working.

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Why won't my MacBook charge or turn on?

I have had my MacBook since new, but stopped using it about 2 years ago. I am wanting to start using it again and I have tried charging it but the light on the charger stays on when plugged in. When I press the power button when plugged in the battery icon and charge symbol show up.

I have tried the charger with my Wife's MacBook Air and it works fine. I have tried cleaning both charger and port. It has been on charge for a few hours with no success.

Any help would be very very much appreciated. TIA

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: 2014 MacBook Pro not turning on

Hi, I have a Mid 2014 13” MacBook Pro and it is not working. I received it the other day and it actually turned on and got to the setup page but it turned off soon after and has not turned on since then. I have installed a new battery but it still does not boot. The charge indicator on the MagSafe 2 power adapter shows it is charging and turns green when charged. I can sometimes even hear a little wiz when I push the power button on the keyboard as if it is trying to start up. I have tried almost everything I can think of including SMC, power reset etc. When I attempt an SMC reset with the MacBook plugged in it does indicate to green then back to orange.

I have tried some troubleshooting steps. Only thing I noticed without taking the logic board out was some orange rust like look on the screw hole of the airport card.

Any help is really appreciated as this MacBook is in great shape and I'd love to get it working again.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: MacBook Pro mid 2014 won't boot, but makes a little clicking noise

Hello,

I'm writing to you because I wanted to turn on my MacBook, but it wouldn't turn on. As it had been a few months since I turned it on, I plugged it in, but, despite this, when I press the power button, nothing happens.

I did the option+command+power manipulations, the power light changed from orange to green, but nothing changes.

Even if I leave the device plugged in for several hours, the light remains orange.

The one thing I've noticed is that when I press the power button or plug it in, it makes a little clicking sound to the left of the keyboard.

The MacBook battery was changed only a few months ago without any problem. And the last time I used the MacBook, everything worked. No liquid has fallen on the Mac and the Mac has been on my desk since September (the last time I used it).

Could the problem be with the motherboard?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: How to use ch341a programmer to flash EFI

Hello there. I've a macbook pro retina mid 2014 and at the moment I have a firmware lock problem. I've bought a ch341a programmer on amazon to try flash the EFI and remov the password but I've noticed that the SOIP8 clip will be unable to attache on the chip. I'm not sure if this is because the clip is damnaged or if because this clip can't be used with my series of macbook, is there anyone that can help me or explain if this is possible with the equipped EFI chip on this model?

Thank you

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Won't turn on but battery charged.

Macbook pro 13" mid 2014 won't turn on but the battery indicator light on Magsafe shows orange. So I let it charge all night and now it shows green. Does that mean the logic board is still working? If so what would be the issue?

More over, when I press Shift, Control, Option and power button while charging, Magsafe turns green for 2 seconds and turn amber again. Which usually means the reset works. So the power button seems to work as well.

Any idea how to fix it? Won't turn on, no startup chime, and no light at all.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Battery recently replaced, wont charge to 100%

The charging light is orange, I currently only have an 85W charger. I’ve had it charging for two hours but it hasn’t moved at all. Here is my coconut battery info.

Update 6/30/24:

Still don’t have new 60W charger, went to see if anything has changed. I updated and I drained the battery to zero and now it won’t stay on for more than a minute despite being connected to the charger. The manufacturer date of the battery also changed. It also still displays battery is not charging on the toolbar.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014: Battery Replacement Becomes a Logic Board Issue. (I'm Suspicious)

I have a 13" Mackbook Pro (mid 2014).

I have never had a problem with it, but all of a sudden I started to get replace battery

warning on the laptop. To verify it was in fact the battery, I ran a diagnostics TechTool Pro 9.6.2 Build 3820 on the laptop. It confirmed that the battery needed replacement.

I didn't want to change the battery myself, so I did what every other non geek does and brought into the Apple store.

They sent it out, because for some unknown reason they don't do that in house.

I just got an email from them saying that the logic board has to be replaced at a cost of $475.

I work I.T for a living and have heard off and personally seen situations where consumers at the Apple store are misinformed and ripped off for diagnosis that are in fact wrong.

I told them to just replace the battery, They said no. I said ship it back.

I just purchased the battery kit from here and will do the job myself.

Anyone have any ideas here?

Update (04/26/2018)

My ifixit battery kit came yesterday. I took out the hair blower and proceeded very carefully remove the battery. I did not use the liquid that came in the box. I put in the new battery, tested everything before sealing everything back up. I did NOT paste the batteries back to the laptop. (and I can't fathom why Apple glues them either, unless it's just to make money on the replacement labor) I used very small, thin foam that came with the new battery to make sure nothing rattled or moved.

Again, there was absolutely no symptoms of logic board failure or anything else wrong with the laptop.

This was, I believe, a flagrant attempt to get consumers to update. There simply is no other plausible explanation. This, I know has happened to other people.

I am going to show documentation and and email correspondence, and forward a complaint to the better business bureau and any one else I can think off.

Thanks for your help and FYI.

Update (04/26/2018)

Just to give people the heads up, the MacBook pro hasn't had any random re-boots and everything is working well since I changed the battery.

No logic board issues.

Thank you ifixit!
