MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: What hardware can be upgraded?

Heya,

I bought this MBP about 2 years ago and went for a decent specification for the time; its 3.0 GHz with an intel i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB hardrive.

I now want to use my MBP for work, so need to install Windows on Bootcamp. To make the best use of the laptop and all the hardcore programmes i want to run in windows, i want to upgrade certain things, but not sure if i can or not...

Can anyone answer the following?

1) Can i upgrade my 256GB SSD to 1TB SSD?

2) Can i upgrade the RAM at all?

3) Can the new "force touch" trackpad be installed retrospectively?

4) is there any other hardware that can be upgraded? (graphics card, etc..)

Thanks for the help!

Just replaced the battery in the MacBook Pro 13” with a new one from iFixIt. The battery shows up at 78% and is charging, I’m watching the mAh increase. The LED on the charger shows orange, as in charging. If I disconnect the power supply the computer won’t run on the battery alone, it must be plugged in, even though it has a charge. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: Do I need to replace my LCD or the entire display? (screen flickering)

My cat chewed the upper right corner of my MBP, which is now cracked/punctured on the screen side and outer shell side. The screen is flickering and displaying double images intermittently. Initially, I applied used my thumb to apply pressure to the affected corner which fixed the problem. Then, of course, the cat returned for one more bite while my back was turned and now my pressure-fix is no longer working.

I'm assuming I need to replace the entire display, but thought I'd pose this question just in case I could save a couple hundred bucks.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: Battery doesn't charge after Trackpad replacement.

I just replaced the Trackpad on an A1425 and and after assembling it I found out it wouldn't turn on so I connected the power supply. As soon as the MagSafe got connected the indicator light turned green, then amber after a second and the unit booted up without me having to press the power button. On the login screen the battery percentage indicates 1%. Once I logon, the percentage says 0% and "Replace now". I've tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM multiple times and disconnecting the battery connector and taking the Interposer out and putting it back in and connecting the battery connector without any luck.

It is worth noting that the unit got exposed to minor liquid spill, specifically cough syrup. Not aware of the quantity but few of the keyboard buttons are a little sticky but when I started working on the unit, everything worked fine except for the Trackpad, which seemed to occasionally seize to operate. Also there are no visible traces of liquid damage on the logic board itself (considering cough syrup should leave visible trace)

Anything I might be missing here ?

@captainsnowball

I appreciate your reply. I do realize that liquid damage to circuit boards can result in an unexpected behaviour in functionality but since the computer has been working fine for months after the spill I still find it a bit suspicious that after I disassemble the unit to replace the Trackpad, this problem arises. I'm still curious to swap the new pad for the old one again to see if the battery will start charging again :) ... I remember one time I was dust cleaning a desktop that had the main logic board totally covered with about 1/4 of an inch of dust that I could just take of with my hands in one piece!..... That board never powered back on :P ... like the dust kept the flow of electrons steady lol!

Thanks Dan, to be honest I hadn't checked the contacts but did so after reading your comment. Contacts were clean and I even gently cleaned them with rubbing alcohol just in case :) ... still no luck

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: adjustment height screw type on trackpad?

Hi,

I am trying to fix my trackpad not clicking anymore on a refurbished macbook pro 13" retina early 2013.
MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: Always needing to reset SMC + Fans running at full speed

For reference, I’ve done some troubleshooting and replaced DC-in at Unable to power up after it slept.

Latest steps to replicate issue, consistently:

Failure to boot up post shutdown/sleep/close lid.

Initiate force shut down by holding power button down.

Power up with power button again. Fans will run at full speed. MacBook can be used this way but it runs at full speed constantly.

Not wanting to use the computer this way, I force shut down by holding power button down. And then reset SMC by holding CTRL+OPT+SHIFT+POWER buttons down for 10 seconds.

Power up with power button again. Fans run at normal speed. At this point if the MacBook goes back into state #1 (i.e. shutdown/sleep/close lid), I won’t be able to “power up” again. I’ll then continue with step #2.

Troubleshooting Summary:

1. Replaced DC-in, ok.

2. Wall socket checked out, ok.

3. Clean installation of latest OS, ok.

4. Charger using original one that came with my MacBook, ok.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: Laptop only boots when you do a hard SMC reset

From what the eBay seller of the system tells me:

Laptop only boots when you do this:

Unplug power

Hold power button down

Connect reconnect power

After a few seconds it will chime, then let go of power button

Note it will run with fans at 100% the whole time. Also battery is dead, so if you unplug power, it will shut down. I found this tip on here on iFixIt.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: MacBook boots fine in recovery but not to OS

I have a Early 2012 13’” rMBP that will boot up fine to recovery mode (holding option brings up the boot selector) and will successfully allow me to reinstall the operating system.

I reinstalled the operating system through recovery, but it still boots to a black screen with white rectangles and a mouse cursor.

I thought this might be a GPU issue, but it does boot up into recovery and that works perfectly fine, and even when it boots into the OS and displays rectangles, it still displays the mouse cursor (and lets me move it around).

It also takes an abnormally long time to boot up, over 10 minutes before it boots to the black screen with rectangles.

While I was writing this, the computer booted up to a different screen, this time a white background and a black box in the top left.

The mouse cursor disappeared after I clicked on one of the black boxes, but it came back after a few minutes.

After a few minutes the screen returned to the black screen with white rectangles.

Update with image of display working in recovery:

Update 2: Well, I tried booting in Safe Mode, and Safe Mode works? I'm really not sure why.

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013: Battery capacity decreasing after swap

Hi, everyone,

so I bought a replacement battery here and i switched and everything was ok for a few hours, then, after calibrating, reseting nvram and the smc, coconut battery is giving me weird reading.

Just when I installed the battery, the design capacity was at 100% as it should be, but after only 2 cycles in, and all the calibration and reseting, coconut battery is telling me the battery’s design capacity is at 89%.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? what’s going on? again this is a fresh batty from fixit and I did calibrate it twice, that’s the 2 charge cycles the battery has right now. I can always try again but this seems weird and I don’t know if its normal and it’ll stabilize later or if this battery is defective. Ill attach some screenshots from coconut battery.
