MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Black shadows from the bottom of the screen

I bought my MacBook Pro 2017 in September and after a month or so of use I got my display like in the photo. I called the support and even after all of the possible "software" actions they can't solve my problem, so it appear to be hardware related.

Anyone has something like that? How they solved your problem?

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: MacBook Pro 2017 Display Glitching Very Badly

Basically today I was using my macbook pro and the screen suddenly started flickering green and pink horizontal lines and sometimes it shows a big vertical line when open or close the lid and also the vertical lines appear in different background, I take good care of my tech so i didn't hit or drop my macbook pro, I'm a full time student and my Macbook Pro warranty expired like 15 days ago, I don't have money to repair it and there is no Apple Store in the country that i am right now so I can’t get it diagnosed officially by Apple.

In this picture you will find some of the horizontal lines

In this picture you will find the big vertical stripe that appears when i open or close the lid

In this one it shows more of the lines like the ones of the first picture but this appear on black background which it is very weird

And in this video you are going to notice some random green and pink dots that flashes very fast in the same place of the big vertical stripe.

Note: I already reset PRAM and SMC, and started safe mode with no luck. I connected the macbook pro to an external display and it works great so GPU is good.

Please help me, thanks in advance.

UPDATE: So the stripe is not appearing anymore but the horizontal lines still appear in certain backgrounds it really depend on the colors that are being shown in the screen being black and white the ones that provoke the lines most.

Hi there, my T key on my Macbook Pro has fallen off. The key looks 100% in tact: the two top clips don’t seem damaged, and the two bottom hooks don’t seem damaged.

However when I try and put it back into place, I can’t get it to “click” in. Has the butterfly mechanism broken? It’d be great if I can try fix this myself as it’s currently lockdown in the UK so can’t get to an Apple store - I also fear it’s an expensive fix otherwise.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Can I upgrade or replace the SDD of 2017 MacBook Pro (function keys)?

I am planning to buy the new MacBook Pro Function Keys 2017. But it’s only available in 128GB and 256GB with no option of upgrading in my country.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: A1708 MBP does not always reboot after installing a custom ssd

Hey guys!

A few days ago I swapped the factory-installed 128GB SSD for a Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2242 SSD on my 2017 MacBook Pro without a touchbar. The installation itself went without any problems and the new SSD was recognized immediately.

With the help of an external recovery stick, I first formatted the new SSD as APFS and in the GUID partition scheme and then installed Big Sur. During the installation where the MacBook had to restart several times, I noticed that the MacBook shuts down, but then I had to restart it manually because it didn't do this by itself. Big Sur is now fully installed and I have all my data back via a Time Machine backup, but it still seems to have a problem when restarting:

It switches off, takes about 15 seconds, then switches on again and then shows the folder symbol with the question mark - it does not seem to recognize the hard drive.

If I then manually shut it down again and then boot into recovery mode with cmd + R (sometimes it is the Internet recovery and sometimes the system-internal recovery, booting into recovery mode from usb drive works as well) and then shutdown the macbook in this mode and then start it again, the macbook booted without exception and without any problems always normal to MacOS.

After this procedure when I am in the operating system, the following appears in the error report:

MCA Error Report CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-7360U CPU @ 2.30GHz, CPUID: 0x806E9) CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

Strangely, if I shut down the macbook normally and then turn it on again, this problem does not occur, so that the mac then boots normally into MacOS.

Things I've already tried to solve the problem:

SSD completely erased again, reformatted, installed the factory-installed MacOS Mojave and updated from there up to BigSur

PRAM / NVRAM & SMC reset

deactivated FileVault and restarted

started in safe and verbose mode

rapaired the ssd in disk utility tool several times

with 'bless -mount "/ Volumes / Macintosh HD" -setBoot' set the hard disk again as the start volume and restarted, here I have deactivated SIP beforehand, because this command otherwise failed with "Could not set boot device property: 0xe00002bc"

tested MacBook with apple diagnosis (held D key at startup), ended with ADP000 - No issues found.

adjusted power management settings with pmset command to counteract the rapid discharge of the battery

All of these attempts were unfortunately unsuccessfull.

I'm really desperate. Does anyone know a solution?

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Display Colors Changed Suddenly To Weird Tone

Hello all,

First of all, I’ve done all the software related checks (External display, Invert colors check, SVRAM-NVRAM reset, Hard Format etc.). The problem is definitely hardware related.

After 3-4 months past of my warranty end, out of nowhere, my MacBook screen started to display the colors weirdly;

At first, the colors were normal until I open the lid to 30 degrees, but it was going weird if I opened more.

After 1 week like this, the display went completely crazy and showed the colors weirdly the moment I opened the lid.

I brought it to Authorized Apple Service and they checked my device. After that, they called me and told that the problem was not in the flex cables or any other cable from the motherboard side. They suspected that the problem was in the cables from the display area but in cases like this, they directly change the display and charge the customer, according to their procedure.

The funny part is, even they could not define the root cause for this issue. They said that they are also experiencing this issue for the first time.

Actually, I am very disappointed to see that if your warranty has ended, Apple does not do anything if your computer stops working out of the blue.

It is approx. 450€ to change the display here in Turkey, but I am wondering if there are any ways that I could open up the display connection part in my device by myself.

I just want to check the cables (in the display side) and make sure they are connected properly.

Thank you all in advance!

Can

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Stage Light Effect on Display Screen

With my horrendous luck I noticed this issue just a week after the 1 year warranty of my Macbook Pro ended.

According to my research this issue can stem from 3 things:

1) a faulty LED-Backlit display in which case will need to have the whole display replaced

OR

2) LVDS 'graphic cable' issue, either it needs to be

--replaced

--or just repositioned

At this point in time I'm leaning more towards bringing it to an accredited Apple center for repair.

My question is, can anyone tell me the range for fees and for how long the repairs would be for each scenario mentioned above? Just a minimum/estimate would be fine so that I won't be quite shocked when I do bring it over to the center ><

And is this an issue that I can just ignore, practically speaking? Would it get worse if I leave it as is(like bigger shadows or whatnot overtime)?

On a side note, I also noted keyboard issues popping up after this. Sometimes the letter 's' would have a lag, won't be functional or would double type. Same with the no. 2 key. I'm not sure if this is related or an entirely different problem with the display -- no other functions seem affected

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 1867 MHz LPDDR3

- picture taken at the lowest screen brightness

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Horizontal line on bottom of MacBook Pro 2017 (Due to overheating)

Hey everyone,

Long story short- I share my laptop with my room mate. My room mate confessed to me that she was using the laptop on her bed, over the sheets with the power adapter plugged in. She said that the machine got really loud (I guess the fans or whatever were going off)

It overheated.

Later that day I noticed that there was a black line below the app menu on the bottom. It was weird because I would move the cursor over it and you could see the cursor. I have ran NVRAM and SMC and it hasn’t fixed the issue.

However, we left it shut down over night and it was ALMOST completely faded in the morning (though with use the lines would eventually come creeping somewhat back but not as bad as the first day.)

I don’t want to be super hasty and assume I am in for a $500 repair. I have seen similar posts on here where people had the same issue and they said that the lines eventually went away, or that after a week of not using the laptop they got lucky.

Has anyone gone through this? Is this something that will get worse over time?

Is it possible the over heating caused one of the cables to come loose inside the computer? I was thinking of opening up the laptop and reseating the display cables.

Does it ACTUALLY need a replacement or is this something that will go away with time/can be solved by opening up the macbook or leaving it off for a while.

As is the case with most people, I don’t have the money at the moment to handle what would probably be an expensive repair.

I would complain about how the computer is only two years old but I am pretty sure its my room mates fault for the overheating lol.

If any of you have any suggestions or similar experiences I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your time.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Mac Battery stays at 1% and turns off when unplugged

Left my Macbook on charge one night and the next morning unplugged it and it powered off straight away, I plugged it back in and noticed the charge percentage wasn’t moving. Tried the option key+press on the battery icon and it said ‘replace now’. I only got this laptop for Christmas 2018 (so I’ve had it for around a year and a half) so I don;t understand how the battery has gone already. I’ve attempted to do an SMC reset but the laptop doesn't turn back on when I press the power button unless I unplug and re-plug it, and there’s no difference to the battery. I updated the system (Catalina 10.15.5) and the only difference is when I press on the battery icon it says ‘battery is not charging’. Is there anything I can do right now other than take it to an Apple store?

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Can USB-C issues be caused by low battery capacity?

Hi all,

Recently out of nowhere my MBP 13” (function keys, 2017, no Apple Care, out of warranty) started acting out in the following combination of ways.

THE LIST OF ISSUES:

Both ports stopped recognizing external display using the usb-c to hdmi adapter I used reliably a while before

Around the same time my battery started reporting “Service Battery“ state

The USB-C port closest to user (front) is only taking ~5V when charging, while the other USB-C port (back) is charging at ~19V (I have current measuring USB-C device)

If I want to use external SSD for backup/data transfer it works on both ports but sometimes I need to plug the other port for charging for device to be recognized

Up until recently, I also noticed that sometimes MBP would shut down when I would close the laptop instead of going to sleep (though after resetting SMC/NVRAM I never experienced this again)

WHAT I TRIED:

resetting SMC/NVRAM

updating system to the latest MacOS version

running diagnostics (only service battery was reported, which later on disappeared)

plugging/unplugging cords in different combinations

using different usb-c hub with direct power-in that used to work before as well

Here is the charging report from CoconutBattery

For back USB-C port:

For front USB-C port:

QUESTION:

Is there any chance this issue will be resolved (especially the one about recognizing external display) if I would just replace MBP battery?

Or is this almost definitely characteristic of logic board issue?

I was thinking about taking up a task of buying a replacement kit and replacing the battery myself while in self-isolation due to pandemic, but would not attempt replacing logic board myself.

Thank you in advance for your help!

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Manually upgrade the SSD firmware?

As there is a Apple Service Program regarding the SSD Firmware in the A1708 Non-TouchBar-MacBook Pros 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Solid-State Drive Service Program, I was wondering, if there is any way to do this Firmware upgrade yourself.

Since this Apple Service Program is only valid 3 years after purchase, most machines will probably not be eligible for it anymore.

When I read the text from Apple correctly, it is just an issue with the firmware on the SSD - it reads: “A technician will run a utility to update your drive firmware which will take approximately one hour or less.” So it should be possible to do it yourself, even if you might lose all you data in the process.

But since I could not find anything so far, I would like to ask you guys, if you know how or where to get the firmware upgrade for these SSDs.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Battery drain since SSD Upgrade (Sabrent) + rebooting problem

Hey guys!

I upgraded the storage of my Macbook Pro mid 2017 with sintech adapter (A1708) and Sabrent SSD. Since that I feel like I’m having a faster battery drain in idle than before.

Can someone tell me how long their MacBook Pros from 2017 (with original storage) are staying alive without using it? Maybe I’m just wrong but I dont think so.

Before some asks: I already did some changes to the system power settings. Are these right?

System-wide power settings:

Currently in use:

lidwake 1

autopoweroff 1

standbydelayhigh 60

autopoweroffdelay 259200

proximitywake 1

standby 1

standbydelaylow 60

ttyskeepawake 1

hibernatemode 25

powernap 1

gpuswitch 2

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

highstandbythreshold 50

womp 1

displaysleep 5

networkoversleep 0

sleep 1

tcpkeepalive 1

halfdim 1

acwake 0

disksleep 10

Update (11/08/2021)

I installed SSDPmEnabler and terminal says it’s running correctly, but battery is still draining while MacBook ist closed.

Rebooting is still not working. It shuts down but doesn’t boot up again. I have to press the power button myself. Afterwards macOS is showing a message that the system wasn’t shut down correctly.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Battery not charging after replacement

This weekend I replaced the battery in my MacBook Pro with a new ifixit battery. The MacBook had worked fine until recently, when it suddenly stated that the battery was not charging and needed replacing. Following on from this, it ran exceptionally slowly and would not boot at all at times.

I have replaced with a new battery, and it now turns on just fine (after an OS re-install), but is still saying that the battery is not charging. It now lists the following:

Fully charged: No

Charging: No

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4698

State of Charge (%): 1

Cycle Count: 0

Could it be the new battery has an issue? Any advice would be kindly received.

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: 2017 MacBook Pro 1708 - one of the USB-C ports is unreliable

I have a 13” 2-port Macbook pro (non-touchbar) where one of the USB-C ports is unreliable. Sometimes I can connect an external screen to it, sometimes a simple flash drive works. Other times it doesn’t. Sometimes it helps if I rotate the USB-cable. Today I actually successfully made it charge through that port - I had previously given up on that…

The other port seems to be working just fine, however I do recall once or twice where I had to take the plug out and try it again.

I know that this version has the ports soldered to the motherboard so I’m not going for that repair myself. But does the problem come from the ports themselves or could it be the chip ‘behind’ them? How can I determine this?
