Has anyone else had this issue where the headphone jack gets stuck in digital out mode?

My speakers are disabled (except for the chime sound when booting), the sound pref panel only allows me to select 'Digital Out' for sound output, and a red light shines out of the jack. Headphones work when I plug 'em in.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Screen goes black, but computer is still running---

My early 2008 Macbook (White) screen has started to randomly go black when I am doing something. It is doing it more and more. After researching, I replaced the inverter board and the inverter cable. The problem persists.

When it goes black, I can use the F1 and F2 keys but have to keep it on a very low setting—and sometimes it won't work for long.

When it goes black, if I were to shine a light on the screen, I can see everything on the desktop!

HELPPPPP MEEEEE!!! Could it be something, besides a screen replacement that I can try myself? (A screen replacement will cost an arm and a leg.) I'm really aggravated by the whole thing since the timing is terrible.

The last 4 digits of my serial number are 70PO.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: What is this horrible clacking noise?

I have a two-year-old MacBook Core 2 Duo, which has begun occasionally making a loud noise over the last month: sometimes whirring, sometimes clacking, sometimes clicking.

The noise seems unrelated to which / how many programs are running--sometimes it begins when I open up my computer with no programs open and continues until I shut the lid, whereas other times it will start seemingly randomly as I'm working in Word or browsing online. I don't have anything in the CD drive.

I would say I hear some kind of unusual noise of varying loudness coming from my laptop about 25% of the time I'm using it, now. At its worst, it can be heard even when I'm playing music over my laptop speakers at full volume. It sounds like it's coming out of the back of the computer, and I'm pretty sure it's not the hard drive.

(I'm not sure whether or not it's relevant, but occasionally my laptop fails to pick up any wireless signal--even in my apartment, where I know there to be about 15 networks in range.)

So, here's my question: What could make this kind of noise? Why might it be so intermittent? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Hi There,

Here's my problem,

The Macbook is functioning fine, but the battery shows a black cross. I can't boot without the power adapter connected but once started, even right in the beginning, i can disconnect the power and it boots up fine. The magsave connector is green.

Ive done the following step,

Reset the pram and smc even disconnected the pram cel for a wile.

Tested the battery and adapter on my other macbook (same model) And finally swapped both battery cable and mac connector with the working macbook. None solved the problem.

So i'm thinking its the logic board. and i would think this is reparable if i know witch component is the most common to fail.

Dos anyone have an suggestion?

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Distinguishing between inverter problem and LCD cable problem

I have the typical display problem where the back light comes on at a certain position of the lid.

How can I distinguish between an inverter or inverter cable problem and an LCD cable problem.

It must be backlight because I can see that the screen is working when an external light shines on it.

I am prepared to fix this myself but do not want to replace LCD cable when it's an inverter or inverter cable problem and of course vice versa.

Curiously sometimes I can open up the lid to upright after sleep and the display is normal but then it cuts out and I have to find the smaller angle of opening to keep the backlight on.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: My MacBook keeps freezing when its moved, is it the ram?

Hello i have a 2009 macbook core 2 duo, and its been working great until 2 weeks ago, when suddenly froze, so i reboot it and it just start working again until i move it, when it just froze again, so i did it again a couple of times to make sure that it just freezes when move so i did and in deed thats when the problem comes up, so i make a little research and i found that it might be a RAM problem, but in the articles i found the MacBooks didn't worked until the RAM was changed, and that's not my case, in a matter of fact im on it right now, it works perfectly while standing in a desk, but as soon as i move it it just freezes again, what can it be??

P.S. a couple of days i realize that the screw right in the middle of the under case is missing, i don't know if that might have make the RAM get loose so when its move the RAM moves, therefore freezes

MacBook Core 2 Duo: MacBook Core Duo to Core 2 Duo Logic Board Upgrade

Hi, I was wondering if there are any issues when upgrading from the original Core Duo 1.83 GHz Logic Board to the 1.83 or 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Logic Boards. Did they change sensor/connectors between these two motherboards?

MacBook Core 2 Duo: What voltage should magsafe dc adapter check at?

If I were to use a multimeter to check voltage on a magsafe dc jack, what reading should I get? Also, if anyone can pinpoint in a picture what point I need to actually check on the dc in. I have an a1181 model macbook. My problem is that the computer will not power up at all, even bridging the power solders. When I check the power solders though, I do get a reading of voltage as I do on many other parts of the board. I wanted to check the magsafe dc in to make sure it wasn't starting up because of a bad magsafe dc in.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Burned SMT on MacBook A1181 "logic board 820-1889-A? Burn like!&&*

Hi, everyone. I have an old White macbook A1181, when it connect to the charger, charger green light turn on, no fan, no nothing.

So I take out the mother board for a look, find that there are two chips burned, I think they are SMT. That things fall apart when I tried to remove them. later I put the charger on, nothing change. Same green light, no sign of turn on.

It has "157" on one of the burned SMT, an other one’s information had burned out completely. I find anther smt on the other side(the yellow one), which look like the same(maybe), I have google the words on it, nothing useful is founded.

Do anyone know the spec of the smt and what do they do? I hope to replace them and see would that fix the problem. The mother board is 820-1889-A.

After more investigation. I have found the Schematics of the 820-1889-A. From the words on the board I look around U7600, and found that there are 4 poly-cased capacitors around. So, I have measured the voltage of the feet of the 4 capacitors , the 2 black capacitors right below the U7600, give about a 12V and the burned two capacitors give around 3~4V. From the Schematics I suspect those might be the C7652 and C7692 (both 150uf 6.3v) as the voltage which received shound not exceed which they can handle. Those route of C7652 and C7692 seem coming form the SMC, that all I can tell. No Idea why they all burned out. I will orde the parts and see what will get. I have no high hope of geting the computer to work, but that is what I will try. Thank you for all of you helping out. I will update what happen after I have done the replacement.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: What can I do to keep my trackpad button from failing?

My trackpad button on my trusty old MacBook has been a little odd for a while now (clicking feels uneven; I get a nice, solid click from the left side, a soft click from the right, and almost no tactile feedback in the middle).

<history>

Yesterday, The button was clicking when I was just typing. I don't have tap-to-click enabled, and I definitely was not pressing the button. The most common causes of this problem appear to be spill damage and a swelling battery. I've never spilled anything on this computer and my battery does not appear to be swelling.

The button seems to be back to "normal" today, but this made me very concerned that I would either have to get a new top case or disable my trackpad (I would hate to carry a mouse around with me everywhere).

</history>

So even though my trackpad is working "fine" now, it may have problems again in the near future. What maintenance can I do to keep my flagship machine in usable condition?

Is there a way to remove the button and remove dust from that area? Since this computer is in its 5th year of use, I'd imagine there's some amount of dust in it. Either way, I'd like to have a look at the components that make it up - maybe some spring is no longer working properly or something.

I'm familiar with replacing the upper case, which I did for my sister's MacBook, so I'm mainly wondering which side to attack this problem from.

Any and all information you have on this subject is helpful! Thanks!

MacBook Core 2 Duo: USB Flash Drive only recognized on one specific port?

Ok, here goes: I used Dasboot to create a bootable Flashdrive with Diagnostic and repair utilities. The installation went fine and the Flash Drive is indeed bootable and applications are functioning. But, I noticed one slight problem. The USB Flash Drive that I used only works if I use the same port that I used when I Partitioned and formatted the drive, if I use the other USB Port Snow wont even recognize the Flashdrive. I have tried several PRAM resets, SMC resets, no dice. I also tried several other USB devices on the same port that won't recognize the flashdrive and all the other devices work and are recognized, so the Port is functioning properly. Has anyone had this experience before? How was it resolved? I guess it is more of a nuisance that a real problem, but I would like to know why this is happening and what can I do to have the other port recognize the drive as I use the other port for a USB hub and a laptop cooler, so real-estate is a concern. Thanks in advance for your help and I appreciate any help advice offered. I suspect it's some type of power issue, but my iphone charges and works fine on the Port in question.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Backlight randomly turns off

The backlight turns off randomly. When I press F1 for a while then F2 it comes back. Sometimes I have to repeat this 4-5 times. Can this be the inverter? Thank you.
