MacBook Core 2 Duo: airport WIFI card new version to install: which one?

Dears,

Is it possible to update my MacBook (early 2008) with newer version of MacOS?

After the upgrade will the WiFi (airport) card not work because too old?

So my question is: If it’s possible to install a new version of the card. Please could you suggest me which model?

For your info the cards from BROADCOM that are Airport Extreame on MacBook system config that are not acceptable as card type: (0x14E4, 0x8C), (0x14E4, 0x9D), (0x14E4, 0x87), (0x14E4, 0x88), (0x14E4, 0x8B), or (0x14E4, 0x90) .

If no solution to fix it I must install Linux…

Sorry for my long question. Thanks in advance for your time. Waiting for your help. G

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Replacement Combo Drive not ejecting discs

Hello ☺️

I picked up a lovely MacBook 3,1 from eBay a couple of months back to play around with. One of the issues it had was a broken optical drive (Combo drive) which meant I couldn't install Snow Leopard from the included disc. So I sourced a used replacement drive from eBay and followed the iFixit instructions to replace it (MacBook Core 2 Duo Optical Drive Replacement). And, despite how bad I am at repairs, it seemed to work! I could install Snow Leopard fine. Yay!

However, now I'm having issues when both burning discs and just playing regular CDs, DVDs, etc where the eject process doesn't work. It just sort of grinds away for a while making 'eject noises' and then starts reading the disc again as if I just inserted it for the first time. Only a lot of troubleshooting (restarting with the trackpad key held down, etc) manages to force a disc ejection. It still reads and plays CDs and DVDs, etc, so the drive seems to work. But I wondered if there might be something misaligned when I installed the new one that is causing an issue when trying to eject, or whether this is likely just the eject motor in the replacement drive now failing?

I was feeling so good about that repair as well. 🥲

MacBook Core 2 Duo: A1181 MacBook no backlight after the boot chime.

I have the strangest problem with an a1181 MacBook, the Mac boots with a working backlight for about 2 seconds, then the backlight goes off.

I thought this could be the screen inverter or inverter cable, however after testing with known good parts the problem persists. I’m not sure but to me it seems maybe the MacBook thinks the lid is always closed even when it’s open?

Edit, I found something else weird, the Mac boots perfect with a working backlight if the top case isn’t screwed in. I tried a different top case thinking if that was the problem, but it’s definitely not. Maybe it’s a sensor somewhere?

MacBook Core 2 Duo: What voltage should magsafe dc adapter check at?

If I were to use a multimeter to check voltage on a magsafe dc jack, what reading should I get? Also, if anyone can pinpoint in a picture what point I need to actually check on the dc in. I have an a1181 model macbook. My problem is that the computer will not power up at all, even bridging the power solders. When I check the power solders though, I do get a reading of voltage as I do on many other parts of the board. I wanted to check the magsafe dc in to make sure it wasn't starting up because of a bad magsafe dc in.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Battery has X, Mac Hibernates

Hey guys, this Mac has been giving me problems recently. The battery is the menu bar has an X on it. Click the battery icon and it says "No batteries available. Power Source: Power Adapter." Of course, the battery is installed. Recently, I was able to plug in the Mac, and then connect the battery while the Mac was running. At that point the Mac recognized the battery and it began to charge. It got all the way to 60% and stopped charging and went back to X in the menu bar. Then, after playing with the battery some more, the Mac started running on battery power. I drained it from 50% to 20% and charged it again, no problem. Then, upon sleeping overnight, the Mac went into a state of hibernation. I had to reconnect the power adapter and that's when the Mac woke back up; X on battery. Ever since, the Mac runs on the power adapter, and simply sleeps when on battery power. So, the Mac undoubtedly has power from the battery, it just seems to refuse to recognize it.

I have tried all the basics: NVRAM Reset, SMC Reset, Master Reset, Hard Reset, etc. to no avail.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Here’s a picture of the Coconut Battery while the X is in the Menu Bar: basically no help.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Making a bootable usb for a white MacBook 2008. Nothing working.

Hi all,

This may be covered somewhere, but I wouldn't know how to search it.

I got a nice Macbook for a student. I did all the hardware rebuild, and it's chiming and looking for something to boot to. I have an erased 60gig ssd waiting for an OS.

Thats where I lost it. This unit shipped with OSX Lion. I searched, at least, 50 articles. They all say the same wrong thing. Download Lion OSX, open the dmg, and find supporting files, create boot media (or similar).

This folder does not exist on Lion 7.0 to Lion 7.04. It isn't there. Another group says restore to a USB from the dmg file, fails every time. Restore from image to USB. Fail.

Out of ideas, even tried OSX disk maker, fails. I am trying to make this from the latest OS, Monterey. All I get is failures. I even tried creating a dvd, fails.

What's the magic combination, please? I give up after 2 weeks of trying. Thanks.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: MacBook does not power up - DVD stuck in drive

When I power up my MacBook, the chimes ring and a blank white/grey screen appears...there is no apple logo or anything. I can hear a noise which I assume is coming from either the hard drive or the dvd drive. After a few minutes, the noise subsides.

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Could heat and humidity interfere with Airport card functionality?

I have a 2008 MacBook (MacBook4,1) running Debian Linux 12. I've noticed that WiFi on the internal Airport card gets very flaky when it's being used in a hot and humid environment. Specifically, Linux, it will spontaneously look like the Airport card isn't even installed. If I shut down and then take the machine to a air conditioned environment, then let it acclimate for a few minutes, Wifi is recognized again and continues to work well as long as I stay in that environment. Of course the machine and its components are 15 years old now, so I'm sure there are plenty of reasons this could happen. I'm just wondering if it's more likely that the slot/motherboard connection is bad, or the card itself is bad?

MacBook Core 2 Duo: Can the A1181 AirPort Extreme card be replaced with a 3rd party card?

I'm using my A1181 MacBook4,1 to run Linux and have found that the performance of the built-in AirPort Extreme card, which uses a Broadcom chipset, is not that great under Linux. Speeds are limited to 802.11g level (56 megabit) due to the available driver support.

Since the AirPort card in this MacBook is removable, I'm wondering if it can be replaced with a 3rd party card which would have better support under Linux, such as an Intel card. The existing AirPort card and slot appear to be Mini PCIe, so I'm wondering if I could swap in any Mini PCIe wifi card that had Linux driver support?
