MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: MacBook keeps on turning off when unplugged, yet battery health is 86%

Hello Ifixit community, this is my first post. The problem is as follows:

My macbook air 13" Mid 2012 keeps on turning off abruptly when unplugged. It can last from anywhere around 2 minutes, to nothing (a small sound appears when powering on, yet cuts off even before booting sound). Initially it would last longer, yet quickly degraded to its current status.

However, when plugged in, it works with no problem at all...

I initially thought the battery must have degraded really, really quickly (i replaced it about 2-3 months ago), yet as can be seen with coconut, its in good health with realtively few cycles.

I hace done an smc reset with no results.

I have also done pram, no results.

I have run diagnostics, no faults appear.

I have attempted completely discharging battery, but as it turns off when unplugged, this is something I can not do.

What I am guessing (in light that the battery actually comes up as "good") is that the laptop somehow thinks that it is drawing too much power and thus automatically closing itself. When plugged, there is infinite power so it doesnt feel the need to close itself, even if it might see itself drawing too much power.

I think this might be the issue because the problem slowly started after very heavy usage of playing CIV 6 for a week where it was surely gobbling up power. Now the component that measures this "power-gobbling" (:)) rate is either broken or uncalibrated as a result of this heavy use.

But of course this is purely a guestimate...

It would be much appreciated if someone helped me out!!

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: Water Damage, Battery not charging. Worked until battery drained

Hello!

My Mum dropped some coffee on top of her Macbook Air. I managed to open it, dry it and cleant it with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%. After a few days of drying the computer booted up but I never got it to charge the battery or work with AC Adapter. It worked until the battery was drained and nothing has happened ever since.

Any ideas on where shall I start testing? I already bought a new IO Board which didn't work so it's clearly not that.

I got the schematics of the board but I have no idea where I should start testing. Does someone has any idea?

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: SSD drive not recognized

My wife's Macbook Air 13" from mid 2012 (model A1466) suddenly stopped recognizing the SSD drive. She was working, left it alone for a while and when she came back it was frozen and unresponsive. She forced a shut down (holding the power button) and when it restarted, it took a while and finally came to the folder-question mark icon.

I booted from a Mountain Lion flash drive and ran Disk Utility, but it does not see the hard drive. I also tried booting from the network recovery with the same results and ran the Apple Hardware Test, which showed no problems.

I haven't been able to check if something happened to the connection between the drive and the logic board due to the pentalobe screws (I already ordered a set of drivers). Is it possible the the hard drive is not completely dead and the information can be recovered? (It's still in warranty and I could take it to the Apple store). Could it be the connector or logic board? Is there any other test I can run without tearing it apart?

If I manage to pull out the drive, is there an enclosure that I can use to test if the issue is not with the drive itself? If I take to Apple and they replace the drive, will they give me the old one to try and recover data?

Thanks for any ideas you can provide.

Fernando

Edit. Found the OWC case and will order it if there's a chance of recovering the data.

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: Lid will not shut completely. Hinge too tight?

I have a 2012 MacBook Air, obviously out of warrantee, that suddenly will not close all the way. It was a problem on one side only at first, but it’s getting worse with a half inch between the lid and the body of the machine. I opened it up and removed the screen. I’ve found that one hinge is moveable with my fingers alone. The other is so tight it needs a wrench to move. I can’t tell which is “normal” or if either is the problem. I can say that when the machine is assembled the tighter hinge will not move past a certain point when closing and that may be the reason the screen bounces back open. My only idea is to wd40 it a bit to see if it loosens up, but I’m loathe to do such a thing without checking here first. I wouldn’t want a screen so loose it can’t stay open.

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: Water spill - battery is not charging but everything else works fine

Hi everyone,

Hope someone here can help with my situation as described below and thanks in advance.

I spilled almost a cup of water on my macbook air last Saturday. I tried to turn it off immediately but it wouldn't turn off and the fan was on high speed for about 5 mins until it turned itself off.

I put it in a rice bag for 2 days and then put it in a room with heater on for a few more days since we haven't had any sunlight this week (really bad timing). I just turned it on today. Everything - display, fan, temperature, keybaord backlit, speakers - is working perfectly fine except the battery. The light on the charger is orange but the battery menu says:

Condition: Replace Now

Battery is Not Charging

Power Source: Power Adapter

I also ran Coconut battery app and it read:

+ Battery Charge

Current charge: 0 mAh

Max charge: 0 mAh

-9.223392e+ 18% (in the progress bar)

+ Battery capacity

Current capacity: 0 mAh

Design capacity: 6700 mAh

0% (in the progress bar)

I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's the problem with the battery itself, the logic board or something else. I don't want to buy a replacement battery only to find it is something completely different.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Thanks,

Can anyone tell me where i can find and buy the parts that might be damaged in the LogicBoard?

I don`t mind to buy all the possible parts that might be damaged and replace just the damaged one when i get home since this parts is cheap compared to buy the entire logic board!

1. F9700 Fuse

2. The Mosfets Q9706 and Q9707

3. ?

Does anyone know any other part that might be the problem? I know that the problem can be everywhere in the logic board, but let`s be fair, I`m trying to buy the parts that mostly common are the reason for the problem with the LED backlight ok?

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012: Replacing the motherboard with 8GB RAM, can I?

Hi,

My motherboard is gone due to a spill (advice: if you spill something in the macbook, just bring it in a repair shop for cleanup, as mine lasted 6 more month but would have been OK if I had cleaned it properly).

Anyway, since I am replacing logic board and top cover anyway, I thought I might put in 2.0Ghz i7 with 8GB of RAM instead of the original 1.86Ghz and 4GB.

Are there any incompatibilities between the logic boards of the same year if I put higher end internals? Given that the logic board that I replace with is from a MacBook Air 2012 A1466 same as mine..

I have a 13" Mid 2012 Macbook Air that has stopped turning on.

I have tried multiple known good chargers - no light on any of them.

SMC Reset, unplug battery + power button all did not help.

No activity at all upon powering on. There are NO battery status indicators on this model to tell if battery is charged at all..

I assume that it is either the logic board or the I/O..

Is there a way to isolate this between a faulty logicboard and a faulty I/O Board?

I understand the $90 I/O Board would be a better place to start then the $400 logic board - but was curious if there was anything I could do to test for sure which is the failed component. Is there a way to send power to logic board bypassing the I/O Board? It's likely the battery is completely discharged so I don't think shorting the pads did not seem to work, due to I'm guessing no power in the system.

Thanks in advance
