Fan is running all the time, while the laptop is totally cool and also well aired.

SMC reset attempts do not change anything. What can be done?

Dear Dan, No nothing spilled into the laptop and it did not drop or get banged. The worst that happened to it: it got transported several times in a padded back pack on planes and trains.

The story with the fan is lengthy. It started to act up last September but returned to normal after I stopped Drop Box to run all the time. Two weeks later the fan started up again for a month. One night 2/3 through backing up my home directory the fan stopped running again and everything seemed normal (when the fan is going full force start-up is very slow erratic, also the computer is very slow. Activity though is very low). Anyhow the fan then started to act up again about three weeks ago.

I wonder whether there is a fully temperature gauge.

MacBook Air 11" Mid 2011: Is it safe to use MacBook Air without the battery?

Hi everyone, I have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air with a swollen battery since a week ago but I'm still using it until now and apparently it expanded more by day.

I use my laptop everyday because I am working on some papers despite having the battery swollen. I've already made a schedule to replace it next month but I'm wondering since I still need my laptop to do my work, is it safe to remove the battery and using it with the AC power only?

I'm afraid the battery will expand more and it could damage the hardware, so I want to remove the battery and using it directly to power cord.

Thank you.

MacBook Air 11" Early 2015: How do I update firmware so new hard drive will work?

I am replacing the hard drive in my macbook air because the old one failed. I have installed the new drive but OS X Utilities can't see the new drive because I think the firmware needs to be updated. An instruction in the new hard drive package says:

"Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra (or later macOS) must be installed on the host computer before installing the Aura Pro X SSD. These versions included an EFI firmware update for your host computer. Without this update, your new Aura X Pro will not cunction once installed."

How do I update this so the computer can see the new drive? The old drive did not work so I am not sure how that would be an option.

MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012: Backlight Not Working...Should I replace Display or Fuse?

My brother has a Mid-2012 Macbook Air 11". He was recently on a flight and was trying to place his bag (which held the Macbook Air) into the cabin compartment. Unfortunately, he lost his grip and the bag feel onto the ground.

A couple of hours later when he went to turn the Macbook and that's where he first noticed the problem with the backlight. He says that when he first turned it on, the screen was very dim, but he was able to make out a dialog box on MacOS. Then he said it flickered and went completely dim.

When he gave it to me, the screen was completely dark. However, by shinning a light through the Apple logo, I was able to see the MacOS desktop and confirm it was the backlight that was not-functioning and not the LCD. I connected his laptop to an external monitor and was able to confirm that everything else was working fine.

At that point, my initial instinct was to just replace the display. I found a couple of eBay listings of Macbook Air displays that came with the full display housing. However, in the course of my research, I've read a lot of support threads identifying the Fuse on the mainboard of the Mac as the reason why backlights on the MBA might fail.

Here's a picture of the (what I think is the) fuse on the mainboard:

My Question: How do I know which is the right solution? How do I know if the Fuse is blown or not? Will buying the display off eBay solve the problem regardless? Or will I end up wasting money if it turns out to be a problem with the Fuse?

MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012 loose screen

Hello internet people,

I have purchased a used MacBook Air 11" Mid-2012 and noticed that the screen hinge is loose. It sits tight and completely fine, but once you open it up to around 120ish degree angle it becomes completely loose. I've tried to tighten the hinge screws but it didn't seem to help.

I didn't manage to find anything in forums and I guess replacing the hinge wouldn't help because it seems intact and once I tightened the hinge screws it seemed to be even more tight up to 120-ish degree angle. Perhaps there's some sort of screen retainer that's broken off and could be replaced? :((

MacBook Air 11" Late 2010: Liquid Spilled on Keyboard, Logic board or keyboard issue?

A client has spilled some wine on a an 11inch mac book air. The computer starts up and doesn't act like anything is wrong, expect random buttons keep getting pressed while typing, and not all keys work. I opened up the onscreen keyboard and it looks like the shift keys are almost always on as are one or two other keys, question mark and the back slash. All the letters to the right of the G key don't work at all. I'm able to use an external keyboard, and disable the on board keyboard (via a terminal command).

Does this sound like an issue with the logic board or the keyboard itself? The spill was on the lower part of the keyboard... space, fn, control area, and it looks like what's under it is mostly battery. I don't mind taking it apart and cleaning it, but do you think i'll need a new logic board?
