MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro: GTX 1060 uses only one PCIe lane for some weird reason...

So, hi, everyone… Weird question for tl;dr band… Does someone know how to rewrite some certain variables in BIOS so that GTX 1060 could use x16 again and not x1 only? Or there’s something else involved, too?

All I ask is does someone know a way to fix this issue with EFI Shell or something similar that can manipulate with BIOS FW… And yes, I know that Anti-Static wrist wraps help not damage electronics, but for that I have a lamp that has metal body… SO DON’T ADVISE ME TO BUY ONE! I’m in such financial situation where every rouble counts…

Just to be clear, DDU + old drivers didn’t help, flashing laptop’s BIOS didn’t help, just as fresh install of Windows 10, new drivers and factory reset… Oh, and yeah, there was no damage found by repair technician on MoBo… And yes, AC Adapter is Plugged in, Power Plan was set to “High Perfomance Mode”… I mean, I AM an idiot to some degree, but not that idiotic.

Now here are some details…

In February I decided to change thermal paste in my laptop in order to lower temperatures to somewhat acceptable (I used MX-4, if you’re interested).

Then I launched AIDA64 and FurMark in order to test cooling perfomance at it’s peak (yes, I know that it is a lot, but I want to get into 3D modelling, so, yeah). Started stress test in AIDA64, then I tried to launch FurMark… That caused Windows to completely freeze, so I was able to shut it down only by holding the power button long enough… After that I boot into Windows, see that GTX 1060 isn’t recognized, sweared a lot, used DDU and last drivers atm, run FurMark and AIDA, everything looks okay.

Decided to fire up Hellblade just to play a little… For no particular reason, fps dropped from stable 60 to high 20s… 1080p Very High (except for a few settings)… Asked everyone else, they said their fps seems normal, even with new drivers (which is what I initially thought could be a problem, remembering that Meltdown and Spectre fixes came just at that moment).

Those are results in DiRT Rally, 1080p Ultra…

So yeah, after I realised it’s not one game, I decided to lower settings in DiRT Rally to see, if there will be any improvement. 720p, Low… Nope, still bad minimum fps, avg wasn’t that better, too…

Temps weren’t a problem, too… They were even higher with playable framerates before…

So I fired up GPU-Z, and… “WUT?! WTF?!”

Here’s the problem… Only PCIe 3.0 x1 lane is used… Not 8 or 16… Ok, Fire Strike next and… Sh!t…

That wasn't good… Combined score should be in 14-15k zone…

After that I tried to flash a new BIOS (not VBIOS), asked for looking for any physical damage… No, not a thing.

Ok, fresh Install of Windows on a new SSD… Ran some tests and… F-Bomb…

After painstakingly trying to figure out ways to test that in Manjaro (which didn’t happen, but was worth a shot) I decided to give UEFI Shell a try… Maybe it can show something… And showed it for real…

MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro: Snapped off the tiny little connectors on my WiFi card.

I need help. I really hope one of your iFixit tech guys reads this. I have an MSI GS63VR 6RF. I managed to replace the GPU fans, as you guys probably know, they have issues. In the midst of doing so, I managed to snap off the WiFi connectors for my antenna, you know, the tiny little circular bits, now they're stuck in the ends of the antennas, I know I can just get a WiFi USB stick to remedy the issue but is there any way to get those little pieces out, maybe with pair of really small tweezers or a strong magnet?

MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro: Why is my battery LED light flashing orange/green periodically?

Hey all—

I’ve had my MSI gs63vr 6rf stealth pro for nearly four years now, and the original battery was completely fried. I ordered a new one last week and replaced the battery, and at first it was working fine. However, I noticed that at a certain point it wouldn’t charge the battery past 70% and when it stayed on the charger, the battery LED light would flash orange to green to red, in a cycle. If I ran the MSI battery calibration program it would normally be fixed, but after a few charge cycles it would start doing the same thing again.

I updated the BIOS, obviously ran the calibration program a few times, and removed the battery to make sure it wasn’t a problem with the AC adapter cord (laptop still turned on and worked without the battery). I also removed the battery and pressed the power button to flush the motherboard.

I figured it was most likely the new battery was bad, so I asked Amazon for a replacement. I replaced the battery today, ran the MSi battery calibration program again and then re-charged it to 100%. So far, so good. However, about five minutes after I took it off the charger the battery LED started flashing an orange light at me again. No red or green, just orange. It stopped after another five minutes. I ran a battery troubleshooter and tried to figure out wtf was going on, but I still can’t figure it out.

Is my motherboard just fried?

Edit: I’ve also noticed that the second battery seems to be decaying at a fast rate. It started with 62,700mWh and then decayed to 59,700mWh charge capacity within 24 hours, which seems ridiculously high.

MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro: Who could repair the antenna cables for my M.2 Wifi card?

Hey, I was replacing the M.2 SSD in my laptop the other day, and in order to remove the motherboard from the case and access the "back" side (where the M.2 drive is inserted), I had to disconnect the antenna cables from the M.2 Wifi card.

In the process of re-assembling the laptop, the connector for one of the antenna cables pulled off from the wire. The M.2 Wifi card has been acting up since, and after attempting to fix things a few times on my own, the card itself isn't even being recognized by Windows anymore. It shows up as a Bluetooth adapter (but can't pair with my mouse), it doesn't show up as a Wifi adapter.

The antenna cables are more-or-less part of the laptop, they're soldered onto copper contacts that are part of the chassis (in the monitor hinge's housing), so I don't really see any way for me to "swap" the cables without doing a lot of soldering and routing or just straight-up splicing a new cable/connector onto the antenna cables.

Obviously, this is out of the scope of my skillset and tools, and I'm trying to take this laptop with me on my travels at the end of the month. I need help repairing this, and I'm fairly sure I'm outside of my warranty with MSI. I'm going to be calling them Monday when their offices are open, but I'm not too hopeful that I'll receive any help from them.

Is there anywhere I could send this laptop off to be repaired?
