Lenovo ThinkPad T490: No signs of live as with battery plugged in - battery or mainboard?

Hi⏎

I have a used Lenovo T490 in great condition. Everything worked, it was charging, the battery reports 91% health and ~110 charge cycles. Then I gave it to a friend so she could play around with Linux.⏎
⏎
On the third day or so, she put the laptop down and it suddenly turned off. It won't turn on, and when plugged into the charger, no LEDs light up (e.g. power button or charging indicator).⏎
⏎
What I discovered:

Laptop works fine with internal battery disconnected.

When I disconnect and reconnect the internal battery, the charge indicator LEDs light up when I plug in a charger. As soon as I press the power button, it turns off again.

I can start the laptop with the internal battery disconnected and then plug it in again while the laptop is running. The operating system recognizes the battery and says it has a charge of 77%.

The battery does not appear to be damaged or swollen.

Before ordering a new battery, is there anything I can check to make sure the problem isn't with the mainboard or charging circuit?
