Lenovo ThinkPad T420s: My laptop isn't displaying anything. Why?

I have a Lenovo T420s. One night it suddenly shut off (I suspected that it died) and so I put it up for charging overnight. The next morning it would power on but the display wasnt working.

The lights would cease besides the bluetooth one and a sequence of beeps would sound (beep and a pause then 3 beeps then a pause then 3 beeps again and a pause and finally a beep) and then the bluetooth would stay on but the beeping would stop and I could hear the system running. The display didn't come on.

I've tried quite a few things

- the 60 second power button fix (didn't work)

- F8 + shift + power (didn't work)

- FN + F5 (didn't work)

- Attaching it to a monitor to check if there is any problem with the display (didn't work)

- Taking out the RAM slot and powering it on (didn't work)

- Checking for any faint lights on the screen (none)

I am also planning on disassambling it and leaving it for 12-24 hours and reassabling it which I will attempt tonight.

If that doesn't work the only conclusion I have is that theres something wrong with the motherboard. But I'm not sure what? If anyone could help it would be very appreciated !

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s: Thinkpad T420s rebooted out of a sudden, freezed and doesn't boot now

I bought a used T420s about 4 years ago. I used it for about 2 years but then the following started:

It rebooted out of a sudden after a while (half an hour to hours).

At startup all lights flash, power and BT LEDs go on for 3 seconds then they go out.

After 5 seconds of darkness it restarts at 2.

And this goes on indefinitely as long as AC is connected, the battery is not empty or removed. Only after leaving it switched off for a certain time (hours? days? I didn't realize a pattern.) it started properly again but the cycle mentioned above happened almost all the time after a while.

Due to this I left it alone for about one and a half a year. Now I tried to reactivate it recently. It started properly but after about an hour the screen froze (a new so far unknown effect) and it didn't accept any mouse or keyboard input.

I always had thought of a heat problem since this started to happen and this time I took the time to open it, clean it and apply fresh thermal paste. To no avail. When switching on the 2.-3. cycle starts immediately, no matter how long (hours to days) I leave it switched off.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s: Why does my T420 appear to glitch/short out and restart?

Hello,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 that appears to glitch/short out and restarts while I’m using it. Is there a way to figure out what is causing this and how do I fix it? When it does this I get a snowy screen for about 1.5 - 2 seconds then it restarts itself. It doesn’t do it on any specific app or window or screen nor does it do it at the same time every time, it’s random. Can anyone suggest how to troubleshoot and fix this problem?

Kind Regards,

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s: My Lenovo Thinkpad T420s laptop boots only about 10% of the time

Hi guys,

I bought this laptop as per description, I bought it refurbished since I wanted a cheap and light laptop to carry around, I just love it.

The laptop worked flawlessly for 8-9 month then suddenly it started to have problems.

At the beginning it started to freeze when using it (screen freezes or BSOD and that's it), I had to power it off with the power button and then restart it.

After 2-3 months of this it started to refuse booting, sometimes it boot, sometimes it doesn't; all the LED are on (power and HD) but the screen is off, it doesn't even show the BIOS screen.

The laptop boots about 10% of the times I try to start it, the other 90% nothing but the LED as described above, sometimes it freezes during use (very rarely) or it freezes at the LENOVO initial splaschscreen, but again all of this is completely random, I have no idea why it happens.

What I know is this:

- I'm pretty sure it's not the LCD panel, I tried to connect an external monitor but it's the same erratic behavior all over again

- I'm pretty sure it's not the HD since I tried with a new one, same story...

- According to he LENOVO user manual it can be one of these two things (in order of probability): 1 RAM Failure - 2 Motherboard failure.

Well, I hope it's the RAM of course (because it's 30 Euros and easy to change), if it's the MB I can pretty much kiss it goodbye because it would be cheaper to buy an other one than buying the MB.

I ran memtest but it seems ok, I disassembled the laptop completely to check for any loose connection but nothing I still get the same behavior.

Now I'm using it, when it boots it works pretty well (except for the very rare occasions when it freezes during use) but I'm puzzled by this completely erratic behavior.

Should I just buy a new RAM stick, do you have any suggestion?

Thanks
