KitchenAid KSB5CR: Why won't the blender turn on?

When I press the on button nothing happens and there is nothing visibly wrong with the blender. What's happening?

I'm sure I screwed the bottom part on tight and the gasket appears to be ok, but the blender leaks uncontrollably when I pour liquids into it.

Great guide!

Because the blender makes a "burnt rubber" whenever its run regardless of load, I removed the cover from the base to inspect the fan, motor, and assembly.

Seeing nothing amiss, I cradled the base (inverted) and "pulsed" the blender. For every pulse, there was a flash of bright light. It was white, not orange.

Is this normal? Could this be arcing? That might explain the "burning" smell.

KitchenAid KSB5CR: How can I adapt my UK KitchenAid blender so that it works in Canada?

If I change the motor, i.e. buy a replacement motor from a Canadian supplier and change the power cord, will it work in Canada?
I have sourced a motor, but not the power cord yet. Any ideas where I could look?

Has anyone done this before?
