Music box: Mr. Christmas music box bells not sounding

I was hoping for some advice on a Mr. Christmas music box with 6 bells, only 2 of which rang, and that was weakly.

The bell striker has a tiny ball, supported by a flexible wire which terminates into what looks more like a ball point pen spring. You can twist this counterclockwise and pull it out for inspection. I tried to use needle nose pliers to bend them slightly but realized that this will not be effective

By the way, when bells are barely audible, the comb tines drown them out, so, you can lay some masking tape down on the tines of the comb to muffle them to be able to hear faint ringing of the bells as you get them working.

Also, masking tape on the bells that ring clearly will then allow you to hear the differences among the weaker bell sounds as you work.

One other preliminary maneuver is to loosen the bell screw quite a bit. It is hard for me to see if a striker is actually hitting the bell when I hear no sound. Loosening it allows it to jiggle if struck.

I had a feeling that most of the problem has to do with not enough use. So I opened the bottom of the box and could look at the behaviour of each servo motor and bell striker apparatus. All but one actually moved as the disc rotated through a song.

I wiggled each arm and found that the non-functioning one actually had resistance at the beginning of its swing. Further, there were nice DC voltage spikes on my meter when the bell was SUPPOSED to be struck.

So I put a couple of drops of very fine motor oil (Leslie oil) at both ends of the motor shaft, working the arm back and forth and tipping the bo each way, hoping to get the oil at least just inside the shell of the motor.

That made all the difference. So I applied a small amount of oil to the other motor shafts, and gradually the volume of the bell sounds increased. It helped to manually wiggle the arms. I repeated the oiling once.

O have to say that now there is a dramatic sustained improvement, although the problematic striker sometimes needs a little flick of the finger. I suspect that this will resolve with further usage.

I have included a photos of the striker assembly. I found that I could rotate this counterclockwise, loosening it, repositioning and tightening. But I plan to apply a bit of glue where it joins the stem so no energy is lost from any looseness.

Also a photo of the underside of the box, cover removed.

So the advice I seek is whether using fine oil will create problems down the road if it thickens. Should I have tried graphite instead, and how would that be applied in such tight spaces?

Thanks in advance.

ChiliPad ChiliCube: Cleared Code 888/Cube turns on but no noise - not functioning

Hi! I had an 888 code. I followed the instructions and cleared the code. The unit turns on as far as the display board showing the temperature and I can adjust the temp up and down but the rest of the unit is not working (no fan noise, doesn't seem to be circulating water and the temp never adjusts automatically as if it is cooling or heating. I'm trying to determine if there are more steps to attempt or if I need to replace a part. I also don't know which part(s) I'd start with. FYI, the 888 code appeared after our friends at Centerpoint had a brief "lights out" flash and despite me having the unit plugged into a power surge device for just such occasions. Please note I am not at ALL mechanically inclined and while I enjoy learning new things, please keep in mind I'm a 63 year old woman without a lot of fixit experience, so please response as if you are speaking to a - 63 year old woman without a lot of fixit experience. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Autumn

Nest Protect: Why does the smoke alarm go off for no reason.

The smoke alarm goes off for nothing. It's summer here, all the doors are open, not a wisp of smoke around, yet it goes off several times a night. My question is can I take this apart and clean the sensor? The unit is a few years old, and we heat with wood so I'm wondering if there's a buildup on the sensor that can be removed. Thanks in advance.

Itouchless trash can.: How to repair a touchless garbage lid?

Recently my parents’ itouchless garbage lid stopped opening automatically and I was wondering if there might be a possible fix for this. I tried to find videos online but didn’t have luck. Basically it seems the sensor works but the lid won’t open; it makes a noise like it’s trying but can’t . I suspect it’s the motor but not sure how to fix this easily.

I’d rather fix it than them having to buy a new one.

ChiliPad ChiliCube: Fixing the actual Chili Pad

Just spent $300+ dollars to replace my pad because it started leaking after I washed it. Now I have a pad to play with and try to repair it. Assuming you can find the right medical grade tubing, this should be an easy fix.

I have suggested to the Chili people that they come up with a patch kit for the older or out of warranty pads. The answer I got back was “we are thinking about it”. Which sort of says… thanks for your suggestion; however, we are in the business of making money for our investors.

Question: I need place to buy the medical grade tubing. Any suggestions?

I will then need to figure out how to attach it to the tubing so it doesn’t leak. Any suggestions?

ChiliPad ChiliCube: Unit blinking 888, won't turn on

The power went out at my apartment a few nights ago and now my cube just blinks 888 with all lights flashing whenever it's plugged in. I contacted the site help and they sent me a link to the Cube power supply repair kit and power replacement guide. Has anyone successfully done this? I tried calling around in my area but apparently no one does small appliance repair anymore. Am willing to try it but not sure I want to spend the money if it's hopeless.

Update (08/13/25)

I did it! the guide was very helpful. The only thing I struggled with was getting the wires labeled CN2 and CN3 to unlatch. They have a blue protector that needs to be slide up to expose the latch, and then the metal tab can be pushed to release them-- I used tweezers, but needle-nose pliers would probably work better. Once I replaced the power board I put in the cleaner and distilled water and ran on High for a couple hours. Unit is now back to normal.
