Dyson AM07 Tower Fan: faulty fan now board dead

So i have just replaced the oscillating motor and the x2 cap to fix the side to side movement and stop it happening when it's off! the main fan motor was a bit noisy, so i decided to take the impeller off the motor and clean and lube the bearings...bad idea! the impeller ended up breaking the locating lugs off the bottom of it, and after all the messing around, when i turned it all back on, the motor was really unhappy, causing surges and then cutting out completely. tested the fan from a known good machine and it worked for half an hour continuously at 10 without any issue...

I managed to source a second hand unit from a dyson repair shop nearby, and it arrived today - plugged it in, the display came on, motor did nothing...seconds later the screen went dark and nothing worked since. i've since tested the motor, and it seems to have a short/very low resistance between the case and W1 phase wire - obviously it's sent 300v upstream and done some damage!

I've checked the fuse, all the 0ohm resistors i can find, and run through a load of testing with the help of AI to prove the buck regulator, the mosfets and the driver ICs all seem to be behaving as expected. however, after tracing U2 (5v regulator), it seems to have a direct short to ground on 2 pins. from what i can find, it appears pin 1 is output (apart from anywhere else, it supplied voltage to the screen), pin 2 gnd and ping 3 input - which appears to have a direct connection to the buck regulator IC output. thinking the 5v regulator had gone short, i pulled it.....and still have the short. then i removed cap c7 to make sure that wasn't shorting....it wasn't either.

Literally tearing my hair out now (shop said they wouldn't replace the damaged board, but have agreed a 50/50 split on a new board if i have to; but I would rather fix this.

Can anyone offer any advice? any common failures when the motors go short?

Thanks all!

Air Conditioning: Trying to source a suitable air-con

Last year, during the heatwave, I invested in an air conditioner unit, which gave me about 2 weeks of blissful cool conditions until the electrics burnt out. I was able to send the unit back to Amazon and get a replacement under warranty.

Sadly, the replacement packed up after 2 weeks. This time I was unable to get it replaced under warranty, because it was deemed to have been used in an unsuitable way, with the exhaust pipe having to have both a steep rise and a sharp turn to get out of the window. This left me out of pocket to the order of about £600.

It turns out that the geometry of the window in my flat could not have been made any more air-con unfriendly, even if it had been deliberately designed as such!

The height of the window, and the fact that the window is hinged at the top, makes it virtually impossible to have an exhaust pipe that will work without overloading the air-conditioner.

My question is what advise would you give to provide a solution that would suit my window?

Tiger Furby 1998: 1998 Furby Motor / Gears Seizing (?) after jump, anybody know a fix?

Hey! I recently purchased a NIB 1998 Snow Leopard Furby (WT code), which did not work out of the box. I anticipated a relatively simple jumpstart (the typical methods of whacking the battery compartment or skinning it & spinning the black horizontal gear with a screwdriver, if the first thing didn't work). While spinning the gear did eventually wake it up, it seems like something's causing either the gears or the motor to get stuck at random, particularly when it's flipped upside down. I dabbed a very small amount of 3-in-1 all-temp silicone lubricant (which shouldn't damage the plastic) on the teeth of the gears (not the shafts, since one of the very few sources I could find said not to do this) with a cotton swab, and that didn't seem to have an effect on the seizing (though I'm not sure if I used enough). I noticed when I was initially spinning the gear, it would catch and become hard to spin for a moment, then return to normal once slightly adjusted. Could the issue be that one of the gears is defective, is the motor the problem, or could it be something like a corroded wire / some other kind of disconnect? I know these guys are prone to motor issues, especially after being dormant for as long as this one, but to me it sounds like that's working fine (everything else functions as intended when it's not frozen). I took care not to deform or otherwise damage the gear, so I don't think that could have caused it. I couldn't find this issue talked about anywhere, and I'm not very familiar with Furbys or small hardware as a whole, so I figured I'd give iFixit a shot. Any advice is appreciated! :]

Here's a video with an example of the sound it makes when it gets stuck:

I don't let it do this for longer than about 20 seconds at a time, for fear of it overheating; nothing stops it except for removing the batteries.
