HP Pavilion dv9000: What is the cause of multiple hard drive failures?

The HP Pavilion dv9000 is not the oldest computer out there. About 4 months ago, the stock hard drive (about 2 years old) began making scratching noises and such, so I went out and bought an external to back it up, as well as a new Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 500 GB 7200 RPM (the "desktop-performance" laptop hard drives).

So I tried backing it up with the external, but the old drive died mid back up, and it was completely dead.

I installed the new hard drive, and hooked it up with Windows 7, but even 2 weeks in, I started having start up problems. Windows would fail to start up occasionally, and I had to do start-up repair a few times. 2 months in, Windows failed again, I started start-up repair, and it didn't work. I went into the hard drive self-check, it passed the quick test, but received an "error #10009: replace hard disk" from the comprehensive check.

I know that means I need to replace it again, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what could cause this. Did I just get unlucky with 2 bad hard drives, or is there something else that could cause this?

HP Pavilion dv9000: Power Point keeps trying to repair file

I have a user running Office 2010 that every time they open a given Power Point file it prompts them to repair the file:

'PowerPoint found unreadable content in Presentation.pptx. PowerPoint can attempt to repair the presentation.

If you trust the source of this presentation, click Repair."

If you click repair, it does not appear to make any changes to the file and it opens but it says:

"PowerPoint removed unreadable content in Presentation [Repaired]. You should review this presentation to determine whether any content was unexpectedly changed or removed."

If you choose 'cancel' as opposed to 'repair' it simply does not open the file.

I can't open this same file on other machines running Powerpoint 2010. I have tried running a repair of Office as well as all available office updates to resolve. Any help I can get on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

HP Pavilion dv9000: Best way to reflow?

I am looking into the heatgun, blocking the vents(wow, that will do MORE damage then good), reballing, replacing the board if I get the right donor

I have asked about the best way to implement data removal separately and actually made it understandable

How I deal with these laptops is very simple, clean the heatsink, get Artic Silver 5, replace the thermal pads on these ticking death clocks to keep them around longer(I get it, I CHOOSE to take these)

I will do this on ANY NVIDIA plagued laptop I need to fix to keep them from dying again as quick(I have worked on a friend's with a reflow, it lasted 2 years before it died, better then a year and then it died before)

HP Pavilion dv9000: Diagnosis of a frozen splash screen?

So, last night my computer decided it didn't want to boot past the HP splash screen.

Usually there are several option commands at the bottom (press F2 for this, press F10 for that, etc) but in this case there were none. I turned the computer off and restarted, only to be greeted with the same thing. I unplugged my external hard drive, and all other peripherals that were plugged into the computer, with a similar result, only this time the function options were present at the bottom of the screen, however the computer was frozen. I restarted the computer again, and the options were available. I ran a quick scan of the hard disk, and everything passed and the computer booted as normal.

My question is: What could cause this, and how can i avoid it in the future? Could my computer be teetering on the brink of its final boot?

NOTE: The battery had completely depleted, I am guessing while the computer was still running. I ran out of the house and turned off my power strip, but forgot to shut down the computer.

HP Pavilion dv9000: PC turned off by itself and now won't turn on?

While in the middle of browsing the internet my HP notebook just turned itself off as if there was a power outage (but there wasn't). Now I can't get it to power on. When I press the on button all the buttons light up but then immediately turn off. The light on the computer where the power adapter plugs in is on as usual. The ac indicator light goes on for a very short time then goes out.

I've checked the power adapter to make sure it's all connected. Unfortunately I did not notice the battery life icon while the computer was on so I don't know if the battery has been charging.

HP Pavilion dv9000: No sound, USB controller has "Unknown Device" with code 43 error

I bought the laptop refurb to use at home for word processing and record-keeping since I have no access to internet. I didn’t notice the silence until I got bored with a tedious data task and decided to put in CD. The player seemed to work, the volume meter showed that it was reading, but no output through speakers, earbuds, or from the inherited playlist samples. Also not from the online classes I had registered for that required , of course, sound to hear the lecture on the wifi hot spot. According to the stickers on the bottom, the machine came with Vista, but during refurb it was loaded with Windows 7 Home premium. I tried the fix suggestions from questions in the knowledge bank, but still no go. I tried the driver update and got a message from our good friend Microsoft that the driver lacked a registration and wouldn’t install. Now there is no listing in Device Manager for sound, game, etc. Do I just have a heavy, clunky word processor, or can I try anything else?
