HP Pavilion 15: Power button lights but nothing happens.

Hi laptop was working fine then had booting issues where it would get to home screen and auto reboot. Managed to get to repair and started a windows reset last I saw it was 47%, but I had to leave. When I returned black screen power button was on but nothing. Tried turning off and on, again power button lights but no fan noise and no screen lights. I have tried a reset where I took out the battery held power for 30s and replace battery but no change. Power light is on when charging but no other lights even caps and mute lights not working.

HP Pavilion 15: Why does my laptop keep randomly turning off?

Hey there!

I have an HP 15 ab584tx. It was working totally fine until last week. Now, it doesn’t turn on for more than a couple of seconds, sometimes just a second. It turns on and then, immediately turns off fully. All components turn off, even the power input port light goes off for a second, before coming back on. Sometimes it even makes it as far as the windows desktop screen and works fine for a minute or two, before randomly turning off again. It also sometimes gives me an overheating warning on boot(but doesn’t really overheat, more info below).

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Removing the battery, draining any static power and plugging in the AC cord.

Opening it up and cleaning it fully, repasting the CPU and GPU.

Systematically removing each component and testing(each RAM module in alternating slots, HDD, CMOS battery, DVD drive, display unit,WiFi card).

Entering the BIOS and letting it idle. (goes off after a couple of minutes here too)

Checking the temps and fan air flow. (normal)

Checked each cable for loose connection.

//

Everything I’ve tried yields the same result: the laptop turning off after a couple of minutes. I checked the temps via HWMonitor, which I managed to somehow install before it shut off, it was around 45-60 degrees overall, nothing concerning. During another boot I managed to install CPUZ and check the hardware dispalyed and everything looked perfectly fine(showed both the iGPU and Nvidia GPU and all 16GB of RAM)There was no physical damage to the laptop either.

I’m really lost as to what exactly is wrong with it. Since I’m in a high risk COVID zone, I can’t go to any service centers for a long time. Any help/input is greatly appreciated!

HP Pavilion 15: re-attaching a bezel to laptop screen

Along the base of the screen, near the hinge, the bezel is starting to come loose from the screen.

I’m trying to find if there’s any adhesive I can use to stick the bezel/frame back on or if I need to wait until the lockdown ends and I can take it to a professional.

I don’t really care if it looks pretty or not, I just don’t want to accidentally damage the screen or increase the peeling.

Trying to clarify the question, the area in yellow has pulled back about a mm or two from the LCD screen. I’m trying to see if I can slip some adhesive in between and reseal it without damaging the screen or just having it come loose again.

This has happened for the first time since installing Win10 on this laptop - it is a former 8.1 laptop. In this case, I only installed it to get out of having to put up with it's owner for a few more years. NO, I did not pick this - he did without asking me.

While I am willing to replace the drive with an SSD if need be (as a weekend project) — as long as he gives me one to install (or cash to buy one), I see this laptop as the red headed stepchild due to the procedure required for the hard drive, which I’m (hopefully understandably so) not keen on doing when it inevitably dies. This apprehension is pushed further into the red by a lack of TPM (even 1.2) and no official Win11 compatibility so it has a use by date of 10/14/2025 — with my targets I set for such retirements, it’s early to mid 2024 but I've told the owner end of life is 2025 for transparency. Yes, Win11 can be installed but it's not supported and I don't want to chance it for a issue HP/AMD/Microsoft will not support. This is in addition to the already abysmal performance of the A10-4655 APU (2014) due to the mandatory security features. The i5-8350U from 2017 (Kaby Lake R) fares better performance wise every time.

All of that said, I think the day has come I may need to open this laptop and replace the HD for an SSD, if these issues persist and grow worse. I suspect it’s about time due to a Windows 10 disk error forcing a restart, combined with the previous SMART issues I’ve known about for years but have kind of stabilized with time. It’s one of those I’ve let the owner know about years ago and monitored it a little, and he’s opted to risk it for the last few years we’ve had it.
