A late update: ~1 month after resolving the issue, the laptop started having similar problems again. To solve them, i just removed 1 of the RAM modules. Haven't had any more issues, apart from a defective battery. So it seems the problem was the RAM.

HP EliteBook 840 G6: Laptop power blinks white and orange, not turning on.

I have a new laptop, worked fine and then it was dropped. And now it no longer turns on. The power button would light up along with the caps lock light then turn off. I plugged in the charger and it shows no life. So i took the battery out and put the power adapter in and now the indicator light blinks white, amber, and then stays amber. Sometimes the keyboard lights will come on and sometimes it will not but the screen will never come on. Might I mention that while putting the battery connector back in, a light on the board would flash white and go away. Same with the power adapter. I'm not sure what to make of it, I contacted HP Support and they were no help.

HP EliteBook 8440p: How do your remove the keyboard?

HP's video take apart instructions say nothing about how to remove the keyboard. It just shows it already out. I snapped off one esc key tring to pull it up and stopped there. HP was no help. I've removed a ton of keyboards from Macs and there are sliders at the top of them, and I assumed, most laptops. On the HP I slid the 4 locking sliders back but couldn't lift or pry the keyboard off. So, what's the secret?

HP EliteBook 840 G6: Charging LED blinking orange (500ms freq)

My 840 G6 doesn't turn on anymore, regardless if I plug in the original charger or a 100W USB-C PSU.

The only sign of life is a blinking orange LED beneath the charging port.

I tested original charger with multimeter, so that is fine. Also I checked the USB-C PSU. When I plugin a volt/ampere meter to the USB-C charger I can see the PD communication from laptop to PSU is fine: it get's up to 20V and pulls 0.4A.

I also tried to detach battery and CMOS battery, press power button for 15-30 sec then only attach power supply. Unfortunately that didn't help.

Does one have an idea what that blinking orange charger LED means? Only thing I can find online is according battery things. But that LED also blinks if if detached the battery and only provide power supply.

Are there good points to test voltage on the motherboard? Does the battery voltage pins need to have ~11V if PSU is attached?

Update - 2024-03-10:

For my feelings it's pulling to much current: 420mA with not battery attached. Feels like there is somewhere a short.

I did different measurements, but don't know how to narrow it down from here. Can someone guide me on measurements?

Update - 2024-03-14

Seems like the thunderbolt controller (or some peripheral of that) causes an issue. I tested with my fingers which chip is getting really really hot and it's that JHL7340.

Can one say if it must be that chip causing issues if it's getting hot, or if that might be related to some of its peripheral? I'm wondering if it's really shorted, as PD exchange with USB-C PSU is still working (but maybe it's not that chip doing PD exchange?!)

Update - 2024-04-29

I did a lot of reading and repair video viewing (thanks Sorin) now and decided to order a replacement chip on aliexpress as well as a cheap hot air station on amazon. After some trials on an old broken PC motherboard, I replaced that BGA chip in a fearlessly mood with the new one, with the result of "no short anymore".

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the only thing... Measurements on the main power rail look like the second mosfet is also shorted (0 Ohms resistance). So first mosfet gets 20V input, on the output it's gone...

So now, as I have the tools, I ordered that one on aliexpress too and will try to replace it. Will keep you updated, just in case someone stumbles over that topic here.

HP EliteBook 850 G3: Power LED blinks white and orange

This is the second machine I've seen in a week with the same problem, or at least very similar.

The one on my bench presently is an Elitebook 850 G8, the one I replaced a system board on was an Elitebook 845 G7. As soon as any type of power is connected, either battery or AC adapter, the charger LED will turn on white, but blink amber simultaneously. I believe it blinks 10 times. I have been unable to find any documentation for this specific error. This persists even if I remove connections from the system board to any other hardware aside from whichever power I am connecting. Even trying to power on with no RAM gives this error, will not beep/blink to indicate the system does not detect RAM. I do not even need to indicate power on for this to occur. As soon as there is enough contact with whichever connector to transmit the necessary power, it starts.

I have even tried running a BIOS recovery to no avail. This 850 G8 on my bench seems as though it will try to power, keyboard backlight will come up, Caps lock LED will light steady, no blink codes. It's under warranty, so ultimately it's probably going to get a new system board, but I want to know what this error is.
