Google Pixel 5a: Sreen won't turn on after phone was dropped but not cracked

My wife dropped her phone and afterward the screen just stayed black. Screen is not cracked and has no visible sign of external damage.

The phone is still working, the alarm still went off every day with no way to turn it off until the battery died. Tried charging, restarting but no change. Then removed the screen, detached and re-attached the screen connector but that also did not help.

Does anybody know if a screen replacement would fix it? Or is it something with the motherboard and there's no video output to the screen? I see no damage to the screen itself.

Is there a way to test what's broken without a functional screen? I know USB debugging requires a screen confirmation so can't do that:(

Update (03/20/25)

Update: I have not repaired the phone so I never found out what the problem was. I decided it's not worth it to spend $100 on a screen which might not fix the problem when the newer version of the phone is only $300. So my wife got a Pixel 6a. Still have the phone sitting in the garage, can't get myself to throw a potentially repairable phone. Thank you all for your suggestions and comments!

Google Pixel 5a: Still having a blackscreen with a new screen replacement

Hi everyone,

I replaced my screen almost a year ago and after the screen replacement, everything was working fine. But then, a month ago, my screen went also black. I replaced the screen with a new one, but I couldn't see anything on it EVEN if I can open the phone, feel his vibrations and unlock my phone with the fingerprint sensor.

So my question is : How can I fix this issue ? Which part I'd need to look at to repair my phone ?

If there's nothing I can do with your suggested procedure, how can I have access to my phone and save all my photos/videos/notes that I took to do a full backup of my data ? I tried to connect a USB-C to HDMI adapter on it with a keyboard and to connect it to my monitor but it didn't work.

Thank you so much community !

Google Pixel 5a: Did my phone short circuit?

I took care of the phone well. No cracks or drops. One day the screen froze on me and never turned on. I plugged it to my other phone and it detected the Pixel phone but not much else. I let the phone drain in power and charged it and nothing.
Google Pixel 5a: Need help determining if the screen or motherboard is the problem

So my friend purchased a pixel 5a for parts on ebay. Screen looked good, No cracks or OLED broken. He sent me his phone to fix and it arrived and I did the swap of the screen. Sadly the screen does not light up but I can hear the phone do things. I am wondering if the screen is at fault or if I possibly damaged the Motherboard since I was unable to power off the device cause the original screen did not work. Any thoughts?

Google Pixel 5a: Is It Possible To Fix MotherBoard Screen Issue?

Hello,

My pixel was working fine, minor physical damage to the screen, but it's been like that for months, and suddenly the screen froze and then shut off in my hand. Replaced the screen and that didn't fix the issue. Repair shop said they're going to try a second screen, but if that doesn't work it's probably a motherboard issue. The phone still functions entirely fine, except for the connection to the screen. If it is a motherboard issue, is there a way to repair the motherboard without having to replace it? I would like to not lose my storage :(

Google Pixel 5a: Why do I have no service after motherboard replacement?

I have a pixel 5a that had the black screen issue where the screen just died one day but the phone itself still worked. I looked it up and there was a special extended warranty just for that issue because I guess it is a common enough problem. I took it in to the Asurion repair center and they replaced the screen but it still didn't work so they replaced the motherboard. They told me that it was a 95% chance it was the screen causing the issue and about a 5% chance it was a motherboard problem. Once I got home I noticed that I didn't have any service even though the sim card was inserted. I tried the same sim card in another phone and it worked just fine. I contacted Asurion, Google support, and Google Fi support. Google support was no help whatsoever and didn't even offer to replace the phone because even though the blackscreen issue was still covered under the special extended warranty, the signal issue wasn't although it was the blackscreen issue that caused all this in the first place. Asurion replaced the motherboard two more times and it still doesn't work. Neither Google nor the Asurion repair place want to own up to the mistake and take care of fixing this so I am left with a paperweight. I'm hoping that someone here knows what is wrong. Is there an antenna that is separate from the motherboard that may have gotten detached? Or maybe some other fixable issue? Thanks in advance for any help!

Google Pixel 5a: Broken screen, phone won't turn off - how do I repair?

I am about to attempt a screen replacement on my pixel 5a. However we can't get the sceen to turn off. No matter how long I hold the side button, the phone still rings if I have someone call it. The screen is completely destroyed so there is nothing to see or select when trying to power down, but just holding the button long enough SHOULD turn the phone off.

I don't know if I can repair the phone if I can't get it to turn off, and this phone has such a long battery life it could be a week before the battery dies. It's currently at 29% and I can't even remember when last I charged it - I was keeping it charged do I can get texts on my laptop.

Well it looks like I get to answer my own question... it's power + volume down you have to hold to turn it off. So phone is off now. :-) Hope this helps someone else.

Google Pixel 5a: Broken motherboard after screen replacement?

My Pixel 5a device fell and although the screen didn't have any visible cracks - it started doing problems. I took it to a professional lab that deals with Google phones (I didn't buy the phone in my country) and they replaced the screen with a new one.
The phone was good for two months, then suddenly one day (without falling or anything) - the screen started to flicker and I can't use it. I thought it was the store's fault so I took it back to them. After a few days, they tried to fix it (tried also a new screen), but they claim that the motherboard is broken (and it was not their fault related to their fix).
I just paid a lot of money two months ago and my phone is bricked? Does it make sense that a motherboard is ruined for no good reason? What are my options here?
