Google Pixel 4 XL: Front panel installation adhesive

I am replacing my Google Pixel 4xl screen and digitizer. The screen doesn't come with the installation adhesive. When I search for the install adhesive, there is no delineation in which version of Pixel xl it will fit. So, is the Google Pixel XL installation adhesive a one size fits all or is there a specific install adhesive for the pixel 4xl? Thanks

Google Pixel 4 XL: Extreme green tint - Pixel 4 XL

I recently bought a broken Pixel 4 XL on eBay to see if I could repair it. I did it for the fun of it and to learn something, I've already got a couple working phones so my hopes and dreams aren't hinging on this one device. The issue with this Pixel device was a strong green tint. I did some research before pouring my money into this project, and it looks to be a fairly common issue with these devices, which is more or less a software glitch.

However, upon receiving the device, it appears the issue with this Pixel 4 XL is slightly different. The device does indeed have a green tint, however, its different from the green tint issues most Pixel 4 XL owners have reported, because unlike what's commonly reported, my Pixel's green tint stays consistent across the whole brightness spectrum, whereas most users report the green tint being more apparent at lower brightness. Some Pixel 4 XL users have reportedly fixed the issue by turning off the 90Hz refresh rate, night light, or always-on display, but for me, toggling these settings haven’t done squat. Also, Google has supposedly fixed the issue with a software update (as it was a software glitch) in early 2020, but I'm on build 220405.003 of Android 12. Now there are things I've noticed about this green tint issue that are uncharacteristic of what most other Pixel 4 XL owners have experienced, such as areas on the display that should be displayed as black are instead green. For this reason, while I am a big fan of dark mode, I haven't used it on the Pixel 4 XL because in essence its looks more like ‘green mode' on this particular device. I'll include some photos to demonstrate what I mean.

In all the above images, the green areas should’ve been displayed as black.

Something else I've noticed too is that the display looks kinda "milky", in other words, its not clear and crisp like you'd normally expect:

The images don’t seem to do justice, but trust me, there is a slight green tint. Plus you can notice the display doesn’t look crisp and clear like the Samsung.

I have tried factory resetting the device numerous times, none of that seemed to help. I thought it might be the display, so I grabbed another broken Pixel 4 XL that I had on hand and swapped the motherboards, but the issue persisted across two different displays. I installed the CleanSlate kernel by tbalden, as this custom kernel has a degreenify feature, but while that helped a little bit, its not fixed it, there is still too much green.

I've come to the conclusion that the issue is not with the display, but with the motherboard, either software or hardware. Anyone have any ideas where specifically the issue may be or a possible resolution?

Thanks in advance!

Google Pixel 4 XL: Question Mark Battery Indicator

Hello,

I just replaced my battery this weekend. I have followed the battery calibration included with the instructions. However after the initial charge the battery indicator was displaying a question mark. I restarted the device and didn't think about it again. Then I used the phone until it died. I charged it fully again and today (day 2 after battery replacement) the question mark is back and won't disappear after restarting the phone.

Is the new battery defective or is there something else going on? Thanks in advance.

Update (08/08/24)

Okay so here is what is happening. The battery cable will not stay seated in the power on the MB. The screw at the top of the bracket will not work anymore because the part it screws into is broken. Is there any type of electronic glue that could be used to keep the battery plugged in or a way to fix the screw?

Google Pixel 4 XL: Adhesive question - Back Glass loose / causing battery reading issues

A while ago i noticed the back plate glass coming loose at the top of my Google Pixel 4 XL. I always keep my devices protected from day 1 with strong cases and screen protectors. I did contact Google Customer service but all they could do was ask me to send it in for a refurbished replacement. In my experience, refurbs can be hit or miss. I tried to solve the problem myself but the 1mm double sided tape doesnt seem to be doing the job.

Now, i am having battery calibration errors. It reads 50% and wont budge, ive gone through multiple ways of recalibrating like factory reset, discharge to 0% and recharge to 100%. That worked for a day until i realized the actual problem. Upon doing research it seems that “fix” is to squeeze to the right of the G logo on the back, apparently the battery cable is there and when firmly pressed resolves the battery reading error.

I want to completely remove the back, clean it up very well, disconnect the battery and look for any irregularities, make sure the connection is solid and reglue/tape the backplate on securely.

Im reluctant to use the 1mm double sided tape again as it doesnt seem to work that well. I see iFixit offers Tesa tape which is probably higher quality than the stuff i got from China a number of years ago.

Sorry for the long drawn out scenario but i would like to do this work once. Is there a rubber adhesive i can use that will be OEM quality, flexible AND removable if need be? I see E6000 glue but i am worried i would have to break the back glass in the event it needs to come off again. Does the TESA tape meet or exceed OEM standards? and if i choose to go with the E6000 glue, can i remove it with a hot air gun?

Thanks!!!

Google Pixel 4 XL: How do I apply new back panel adhesive on a Pixel 4xl?

I got iFixit's Pixel 4xl Battery replacement kit and followed the guide. Everything worked, the battery works, and each step was very well documented... except for the part where I had to apply the new back panel adhesive. I can't find a guide or any instructions about what to peel first or how to place it and on what part (back panel vs laying it into the case itself). I tried to apply it anyway and didn't realize until after 3 attempts that there is a red ribbon running along one side of the adhesive. Needless to say it ended in a tangled sticky mess.

There's clearly a way that this is supposed to be applied but I could not figure it out. I ended up cutting small pieces and using them as a temp fix until the replacement arrives.

Can someone explain what i'm supposed to peel off first, where it's supposed to be placed, and at what point i'm supposed to remove the thin red strip?

Google Pixel 4 XL: Battery connector broke off and is stuck on the motherboard.

In the process of removing the battery from the Pixel 4XL, the connector on the battery broke and is stuck inside the mating end on the motherboard. This connector is TINY; I didn’t discover the issue until I tried to insert my replacement battery and it wouldn’t go in.

The connector tore from the flex strip, so it’s flush and tightly plugged into the mother board. The iFixit tweezers are too big, so I used a sowing needle to try and dig it out. The top of the connector (plastic / PCB material?) flakes off, but the metal fingers are still attached to the motherboard.

At this point, I’m not sure what can be done to salvage it. My first thought is to de-solder the connector on the motherboard, but I don’t have the skills nor equipment to do this properly, let alone the part number for the connector on the motherboard.

I’m hoping there’s a trick or technique that makes it easy to remove the metal piece that’s embedded in the connector right now. Any tips or tricks?

Google Pixel 4 XL: Is the front face unlock serialized?

I was wondering if anyone has replaced the front camera/face unlock assembly? If so, is it serialized like the iPhones? Or can you replace it, and it still work?
