Fluorescent light: Fluorescent lights dim and flashing

I have a fluorescent light fixture that uses two 40-watt 4' long tubes. It has recently started acting strange. When first turned on, it works fine for a minute or two, then one of the tubes becomes dim and the other becomes dim and flashing. It's not the tubes, as I've replaced those and nothing changed. Someone suggested it might be the ballast. I'm not exactly sure exactly how old the fixture is, but I'd guess it's at least 10 years old and has been used daily for that entire time. Is the problem caused by the ballast, and if so is that something that can be changed, or should I just buy a new fixture?

Fluorescent Light: lights not coming on right.

Hi,

I have two 4ft double bulb flouresent light fixtures in my Kitchn. I live right out of New Orleans, LA. When it rains, and it's damp outside we have trouble turning the lights on. Especially in the morning. Sometimes you can flip the switch on and off a few times and get it to come on. But most of the time you just have to wait.

Any idea what could be causing this?

T8 Fluorescent Fixture: LED bulbs have started flickering and turning extremely dim instantly

We have a T8 fixture over our kitchen sink. We have been using LED bulbs compatible with T8 for years, They generally last nearly a year before needing to be replaced, but the most recent one started flickering after only a few months of use and went out completely a week ago. Since then we have replaced that bulb with two others, both of which started flickering almost immediately, and then after about a minute went exceptionally dim. This change is accompanied by a strong chemical odor (I'm assuming it's something happening to the phosporous inside the light).

Is this a common issue that is fairly easy to diagnose and fix on my own or will I need an actual professional to look into it?

Fluorescent Light: 4 ft fluorescent lights inside work outside don't.

I recently obtained 25 / 4 bulb lights. They came out of a building that is being remodeled. I hooked a couple up in my shop only to find out that the 2 inside bulbs work and the 2 outside don't. I tested every one and the same thing on every one. I'm very confident that one ballast on all of them isn't bad. Is it the way they are wired ?. They have magnetic ballast MB 2x40/120 RS in them. I'm not very knowledgeable in this field. All advice we be appreciated. Thank you in advance. P.s I thought each side worked off a ballast.not the center 2 and outside 2

T8 Fluorescent Fixture: Why is my T5 light going pink?

(I know this is the T8 fixture forum but I couldn’t find a T5 light forum)

So, I have gone through 3 T5 fluorescent light tubes in the last week.

When I install them, they are lovely and bright for about 48 hours.

Then I turn them on, it’s a very dim, drab pink and the ends are black.

It is my understanding that this is the mercury escaping and that replacing the bulb should resolve the issue but it just keeps recurring.

Do I have the wrong bulb? Is it a wiring issue?

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!

T8 Fluorescent Fixture: Multiple fluorescent fixtures in sunshine ceiling are all failing

I’ve been having issues with the fluorescents in my sunshine ceiling. There are 3 switches that independently control 3 sets of lights. The first set is a double fixture while the other two sets each consist of 4 single fixtures (each set of 4 is 2 pairs connected in series).

The lights were working great until all at once all sets started having trouble turning on, there would either be no light or a very dim light at the ends of the tubes. Though once the bulbs did engage they would stay on with no issue. Also, if I rotated the tubes in the sockets they would often turn on, though this seems to be an effect of the rotation and clicking in and out of contact more than the tube position.

Also, recently the bulbs have started worked more reliably recently, after several weeks of them almost never engaging when turned on for the last week they’ve started turning on fairly consistently (and instantly), though often one or two tubes won’t engage. The only thing that really changed is I had both tubes out of the double fixture and one tube out of one of the single fixtures.

I’m not sure what the problem is, the tubes are all pretty new and in good shape, each fixture has its own ballast (and there’s 3 different circuits) so that shouldn’t be the problem. Temperature and humidity don’t seem to correlate to anything either. I do know the upstairs power isn’t grounded, so perhaps that could be related, I don’t know what else could cause all 3 sets to start failing at once and then go back to mostly functional.

UPDATE:

So for the last week the lights have been working a lot better, yesterday just one light was out. When I rotated it in the socket I noticed it was loose and I thought I had it re-engaged, yet today it was out again and when went to rotate it I noticed that it didn’t seem to be particularly secure in the socket.

So I've come up with anther theory for the behavior: The issue first came about near the end of a heat wave. Perhaps an unusually hot day caused the metal to expand on all the fixtures, managing to knock all the lights a bit out of their socket. When the heat wave ended it caused the metal to contract and the lights all started shifting out of their sockets causing all 3 sets to have trouble engaging.

The one thing I noticed when troubleshooting is that rotating usually got the light to turn on. But I was probably stopping once the light engaged rather than trying to rotate into a really secure position, or I fiddled around further swapping bulbs and didn’t take enough time to make sure they were really secure. So it’s possible that I left them loose and they kept popping out of rotation due to further temperature variations, and the reason they started working again is I eventually did end up leaving bulbs in a secure position in their sockets.

It seems a little odd but right now all lights are secure in their sockets and turned on, so I’m going to just leave them as is for a bit and see if they stay fixed.
