Dell XPS 13: Abrupt sleep after battery replacement, diagnostics can't find problem

Hello everyone,

I was very pleased with receiving a new battery replacement for my Dell XPS 13 9350. They battery works like it should…or at least I hope it is.

A new problem has started with my computer where my computer suddenly hibernates as if the battery was drained, but the computer is plugged in.

According to the Dell Support forum, when something like this happens, there should be a sequence of amber and white led blinks, which I never catch.

I’ve performed every diagnostic test on this device. Ran the Dell Support application. It found nothing wrong. Shut down and ran the Dell Support Diagnostics tests (F11 then use F12 to scroll down to Diagnostics), ran that and it found nothing. Checked the Event Viewer in the Microsoft Administrative tools. Even with a BSCS, the log is still greek to me, but one thing that caught my interest was that there was an information notice that a “Critical Battery Trigger Met” (Event 524, Kernel-Power) which makes no sense because the battery is plugged in and fully charged. A few seconds later according to the log an Event 42, Kernel-Power occurs stating that “The system is entering sleep” and “Sleep Reason: Battery”.

Either I installed a bum battery or the computer is rejecting it. II was working well yesterday. I event let the battery run for about 6 hours just to test the fitness of the new component ant it worked splendidly. But new this new issue started last night when I got home.

Two nights ago when I installed the battery, I had blown out as much dirt, hair, dust, and keyboard crud with a can of compressed air. Even with the added protection of a plastic keyboard cover, there was plenty of junk in there. Could something in the canned air corrupted something?

Another factor, I had tracked my package with UPS. According to the shipping log, the battery was still at a shipping facility over the weekend. Whats more, only of the people who live in the house either didn’t here the delivery person, or the delivery person didn’t knock. So the package, despite being layered in cardboard, foam, and an anti-static bag, sat out on my front porch in the 25-30 degree F weather for a few hours. Could outside weather conditions factored into this random behavior?

The manufacturer of the replacement battery is not Dell but an OEM. Could there be proprietary meddling?

What could be causing this malfunction?

I’ve started to track the amber/white blinking pattern. It might be 4 amber 1 white 4 amber 1 white 4 amber 1 white before shutting off. Could it be a CMOS error?

Dell XPS 13: Will Samsung 950 Pro work in Dell XPS 13 9350?

I just bought a xps 13 9350 with the core i5, 8gb's ram and a 128gb ssd (turns out its the Samsung cm871 m.2). I was planning on replacing the drive immediately with a 512GB and didn't want to give Dell $500+ or more to do it (plus, I wanted to stick to a non-touchscreen lower res display for better battery life).

I bought a Samsung 950 Pro 512gb from amazon and I'm not sure if it will work or not and I can't find anything online that says definitively that it will or wont? Hoping someone here knows?

Seems like on the previous xps 13 (i think its the 9343) it likely wouldn't, but with the switch to skylake in the 9350, maybe it will?

Dell XPS 13: iFixit-brand replacement battery recognized, but won't charge/power

I just replaced the OEM 90v7w battery on my Dell XPS 13” 9350 with the replacement ordered from iFixit. The computer recognizes the battery, says that it’s a 90v7w battery and that its health is excellent and doesn’t complain that it’s a fake.

However, the battery doesn’t seem to charge or provide power. Namely, the computer immediately shuts down when the AC adapter is unplugged. It won’t boot without the AC adapter being plugged in. Ubuntu’s Power Statistics pane says that the battery state is “Charging” but that the “Rate” is 0W — seemingly indicating that power isn’t actually going in (or out) of the battery.

Oddly, the first time I booted the computer (after a few hours plugged in after I did the replacement), the charge was 80%. Now it’s 83% — it seems to go up 1% after each cycle of plugging in, booting, then unplugging. That charge statistic is reported both in Ubuntu and in the BIOS.

(Edit: The BIOS also says the AC adapter is fine.)

Has anyone encountered this issue? Is the replacement battery not actually compatible with my computer? Is there a software fix?

I have since noticed that the OEM battery was labeled 7.6V. But iFixit’s replacement is labeled 7.4V. Could this be the problem, do I really need a 7.6V replacement? (Power Statistics claims that the replacement battery operating at 8.0V… though if the rate is 0W, presumably no current is actually moving.)

Dell XPS 13: Replacement battery not detected

I ordered an installed an iFixit replacement battery and it keeps saying “not detected”. The old battery still works, just doesn’t hold a charge long. I have confirmed I am installing it correctly because I put the old battery back in and it shows up as normal. But after putting the new battery in, no matter what I try, it keeps showing “not detected” in both Windows and BIOS settings. I have tried removing the CMOS battery for 30 seconds while also removing the battery and holding the power button, reattaching both and booting up to set the Date/Time again and each time the BIOS settings still show no battery detected. I can repeat the process with the old battery and it starts working again. Did I get a bad battery? Is there something else going on?

Dell XPS 13: Dell XPS non-bootable after SupportAssist, glance over my proposed fix

Summarized: SSD issues, not booting due to missing EFI, primary volume recognized as RAW. The concern: losing data. I believe I'm comfortable with rewriting the EFI with bootable image, but will relabeling the RAW volume to NTFS where my primary data storage is have a chance of losing data? My understanding is the command will re-label the volume without formatting.

Details:
Dell XPS 13 9343, Win10 x64, Lite-On L8T128L9G-11 (128GB)

Daily driver with usage within 24 hours previous, boot up to error "No bootable image" - have seen this issue with this very Dell XPS (and many other reports online) prior due to updates and usage a toggle of the UEFI to legacy boot or verifying secure boot is disabled fixed it.

This case is different, UEFI shows two partitions with neither bootable. When manually attempting to set path for \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi is nowhere to be found under file system 0 or 1. I only see a BOOTSECT.BAK file and IndexerVolumeGuid under system volume information.

So it seems to me my EFI volume needs to be rewritten which I can follow along from this guide:

Desired outcome: Get bootable again, no loss of data.

++http://woshub.com/how-to-repair-uefi-boo...

Planned solution: Rewrite MBR and rebuild Boot Configuration File as advised above to get bootable. Targeting Volume 1 labeled ESP.

Then set the primary storage volume back to NTFS using command "format fs=ntfs label=volume label quick"

My questions: Am I misunderstanding/missing anything here or have you some additional guidance? Further, is the above command necessary and will it risk losing my data, does it actually format the partition? Or are we simply telling the filesystem to be NTFS and that's all?

Why do I show 3 more additional RAW filesystems and should I change them to NTFS also?

I don't understand why I show so many volumes (5) and partitions (7) on this disk - 3 recovery partitions, one of which nears 7GB, but I am not able to use that as a bootable image to get to command prompt like I am the bootable USB...

Volume 0 RAW PARTITION 110GB

Volume 1 - ESP FAT32 PARTITION 500MB

Volume 2 RAW PARTITION 750MB

Volume 3 RAW PARTITION 511MB

Volume 4 RAW PARTITION 7110MB

Previously attempted solutions:

Changing UEFI/Legacy Ensuring Secure Boot is disabled Adding boot delay Attempting to manually navigate to bootx64 Startup repair via Win10 bootable image Updating BIOS to latest

During this process, before trying the BIOS update solution, I noticed it said I was on A03, I know I did a BIOS update last year, the newest BIOS is A20 - how in the world did that happen?

Additional details:

I noticed some battery abnormalities, I went to run a diagnostic (forgetting there was onboard diagnostic) and via the Dell website SupportAssist was installed. Apparently there's some security vulnerabilities with this and it was just after the install and diagnostic ran that my machine became non-bootable. Diagnostics showed me what I already knew that battery is in fair health. Ran a thorough diagnostic on SSD via onboard and it passed.

Thank you for your time

Dell XPS 13: XPS 13 9350 Amber flashing lights after ifixit battery install

After the original battery reached about 20 minutes of capacity and began to swell, I ordered a replacement from ifixit. I was impressed with everything and the battery installation was easy. While connected to the dock, occasionally the front light will flash amber four times and I will get a notice to plug in my laptop, that the battery is 0%. Then it will go away. I reinstalled my original battery and it worked fine, despite not having any capacity. The ifixit battery is reinstalled per directions and I am getting the flashing lights on occasion. A battery report and full system diags show no issues. It works fine on battery and it is great to have the capacity back, but the error when plugged in is quite frustrating. Do you have any solutions for this?

Dell XPS 13: Replaced battery, but it won't charge beyond 21%

So I replaced the battery in my XPS because the old battery only lasted a few hours and it was beginning to swell. The new battery fits fine, but it won’t take a charge of more than 21% of capacity. That’s using the original Dell charger.

Dell XPS 13: Where can I buy battery for Dell XPS 13 9360?

I have tried searching for it on Dell website, not much luck there. I am looking at eBay now, would you recommend to buy one there?

It’s Dell XPS 13 9360 which I bought more than 2 years ago. Great laptop, still feels like new, only thing - battery lasts for 3-4 hours instead of 8-9.

Dell XPS 13: Palmrest compatibility with other models

Because of a recent accidental drop, the palmrest assembly on my XPS 13 (9343) is broken on the part where the hinge is fixed (see the circled part in image)

.

I live in France and the cheapest way to buy a spare palmrest assembly would be to buy a second-hand one. I was wondering if palmrests from other series of Dell XPS 13 would be comptabile with mine, as the touchpad might be smaller on mine than on newer versions for instance.

Thank you for your help!
