Dell Latitude E7440: Removing the BIOS asset tag from a used Dell?

I know this may be a bit exotic for the iFixit community and that's fine. I purchased 2 E7440 i7 FHD Touch systems as a lot for almost nothing compared to what they get complete, so I took a chance and both were easily repaired - even if it took a new drive (pulled), spare RAM and 2 LCDs (1 with TAB issues, other from a junk system that was too far gone - fried inductor and dead shorted motherboard). I’ve blurred the tags to protect the previous company if anyone knows.

PART 1: I noticed this because I needed to confirm the tag on the bottom matched for the ownership transfer (otherwise I remove the sticker, and replace or leave blank) so I decided to make sure it's not hiding an asset tag while I was there after it passed the tester hard drive check (shows in BIOS).

PART 2: When I checked for anything I want to change in the BIOS before I install Windows, I did go though the BIOS to see if I need/want to adjust anything and they have a BIOS asset tag. The issue with Dell is you can’t clear this out in the BIOS once set (although it can be set in BIOS) and it persists. I did some research and I think I know what tools I need to use, but I’m not 100% clear. It looks like a job for CCTK (Dell Command|Configure) on the E7440, since it’s such a new machine that may not work with the legacy Platform Tag Utility.

Is there any instructions on how to do it I should be aware of, and which one will clear it out? Normally I’d know this, but you do not run into this every day.

``Okay, there’s a problem with my dads Dell Latitude E7440. The issue is basically that when it’s connected to power (doesn’t matter if it is a power cord or the battery) and i press the power button lights up, it stays on for a couple of seconds then the light is gone and the battery icon starts blinking and eventually turns off and everything goes black. There is no display during this and also the fan is not spinning :(. As i looked up some youtube tutorials on how to fix the issue, someone said that removing the CMOS battery and replacing it may solve it. My dad said it was a fried motherboard, and i think it is too. Tried removing the CMOS and booting up without it, same issue. Removing the ram and inspecting the motherboard. Nothing helped and the mobo looked perfectly fine, I really want to surprise him and give the laptop back working. Thought about buying a new motherboard but decided to reach out to you guys before doing something stupid.

Dell Latitude E7440: Changing a touch display for a non touch one

Good morning, I have a e7440 touch screen model with a dying display, here on Brasil a new touch panel is crazy expensive, but I can find a mate non touch panel for cheap, I see that they are assembly different (touch is glued on the frame but the non touch is screwed on the cover) my question is if possible to interchange the panels? My fear is that the cover is different on the models

Dell Latitude E7440: Lat E7440 intermittent audio issues - any fix?

This happens with this E7440 randomly, but this is the ~4th or 5th occurrence of the issue: Laptop doesn’t hibernate right multiple times, audio stops working when I get forced into a reboot to a fresh desktop, I need to uninstall and reinstall the driver to fix it. Rinse and repeat as the audio drops dead again.

I have tried throwing the book at this laptop and nothing sticks - Reset the BIOS in the UI, pulled the CMOS battery and dumped the BIOS settings for the default checksum and tried to stop and restart the audio hardware in Device Manager - NOTHING fixes the issue short of uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling the Dell driver and then it happens again.

Is there any way I can fix this, or at least quickly make sure it is (or isn’t) due to the motherboard? It’s seeming more like a motherboard level fault by the day, especially since it persists. It does pass system management testing (and audio tests) consistently when this happens, so I’m beginning to suspect a higher level intermittent fault.

Dell Latitude E7440: What is the chip mounted in PD5 near the power plug.

Hello, it appears the chip mounted to PD5 (maybe a transistor, maybe a diode) on my board was damaged by a power surge. this is usually crammed under the display and power cable. I don’t want to have to toss out an otherwise working computer because a single easily replaceable component broke. The chip is damaged to the point i cannot read what it’s marked with; I just need someone to pop one of these computers open, and take a photo where the markings on the chip are clearly legible.

Dell Latitude E7440: Why does my dell keep overheating

i just bought this refurbished dell laptop and it gets hot when doing a lot of tasks, it's based temperature is above normal, and extremely hot when playing light games it get so hot that it hurts to touch, I've checked online and people seem to have experienced the same issues, they say it's two things Vpro and intel MT, that to stop it you need to disable them both or do a clean install of windows yourself and not install them and i'm not sure how to do that, and the problem is i haven't found a place that states how to disable Vpro or intel MT if it's even possible, I don't want to do a clean install of windows as i already have things installed and don't want to lose them for something that isn't guaranteed, aside for this the laptops run very well, even when extremely hot, it hasn't shut down on me yet, though it's too early to say it won't later and i don't want to risk using it like this only for it to ruin the internals, i don't believe it is that the fan or that the thermal paste is bad, because i have seen people who said they have done all that and it still over heats, i think it's a software problem, i'm just not sure how to go about solving it.

the specs are

Dell Latitude E7440: Display Issue, Bottom Corner Black

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my Dell Latitude E7440 (non-touchscreen version). It started last week when I noticed that the bottom corner of my display was black. At that time, after a few minutes, the screen returned to normal. However, now the entire screen goes black occasionally. I found that adjusting the brightness (increasing and then decreasing it) while the laptop is connected to power seems to fix the problem, but this trick doesn’t work when the laptop is running on battery.

Despite this, the bottom corner of the screen still remains black, and this hasn't changed. Additionally, I noticed that the battery seems to be swelling, though I'm not sure if that's related to the display issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar, or have any idea what might be going on? I’ve attached some pictures for reference.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dell Latitude E7440: Win10 Pro 20H2 not properly hibernating - reasonably new install

The install on this laptop is not that old; it’s from March 1st, give or take. See here for more details on how this machine came to be, if needed.

This is the second time it has not properly hibernated - first time was forcefully shut down, and the 2nd incident didn’t even bother properly hibernating - just shutdown without saving the contents to the drive. Even worse now is this issue has cost me battery calibration logging I was doing to see how much life my 73-75% health pack has left since it’s my last battery.

Has anyone looked at these laptops at the BIOS level closely to see if there’s any settings that cause this? A25 BIOS and the install is from Feb. 22 so it’s not even that old to suspect bad software yet. I can wipe and reinstall Windows with a fresh 20H2 image, but the time to setup that is enough I want to exhaust some reasonable options first. This doesn’t feel like the laptop is plagued by the Spectre microcode restart glitch to me.

Dell Latitude E7440: Is this machine just beyond repair?

**I have since given the job this does to a rough cosmetics 840 G3 6200U/8GB setup, but I keep this around as it still works.**

This laptop has been through a lot - the original problem was related to hibernation, which I let go of as it didn’t happen consistently. However, not too long after the audio failed intermittently, which I suspected a failing motherboard. I reinstalled Windows for a 3rd time* and the issue of hibernation persisted.
*1st reinstall was to move the SSD from a E6440 to this E7440 - I probably could have reused it since a lot of the hardware between HSW E6/E7 machines are identical, but I didn’t want to risk getting my 10 Pro key invalidated and blacklisted. 2nd was to rule out other issues, and the 3rd was to fix the audio problem.

In addition to reinstalling Windows THREE TIMES, I also changed the hard drive cable to rule out the possibility. It has been fine since, but it failed again.

However, a new more serious issue has come up. I went to fire it up to check my library against the replacement, and it said there were disk errors so I restarted it. However, it has been stuck here for like, 5-10+ minutes and no progress has been made. It repaired the disk errors, but keeps perpetually scanning the drive for errors. The CS900 works perfectly in my touch E7440s, so it’s probably not an SSD incompatibility. This non-touch one was a grab I got for the screen, but was 768p so I couldn’t use the screen and shelved it until the E6440 began to age and I put a blem FHD screen in.

See here:

At this point, is there any hope left for this laptop, or is it beyond repair? I also cannot keep reinstalling Windows for reasons I will not mention here openly as the CS900 is likely a 75TBW SSD and Windows reinstalls can be hard on these drives. I also cannot realistically go back to Win8 due to the 2023 EOL issue.

Dell Latitude E7440: Is my aftermarket pack bad (purchased from iFixit)

Due to the age of my original Dell batteries I had at the time (OEM 34Wh* and a 47Wh OEM), I purchased this as a emergency spare I cycle around and keep for travel. While I had to scrap one of my OEM packs (Simplo), my larger capacity one is still going reasonably strong.

The way the copy pack failed is it wouldn’t charge, so what I did was uninstalled the Microsoft AC adapter driver, and both of the ACPI battery drivers (these laptops support a E-Port dock battery, so I have two drivers installed). While it made it charge, Dell Command|Power Manager complained the battery is toast, and the pack instantly jumped to 100% from 10%.

*The 34Wh expanded, so it has since been recycled :(. Not surprised, sadly.

When I plug the OEM in, I don’t see any issues which are reported by my laptop and even in Dell Command|Power Manager, it shows up as good. See here:
